Seriously, anyone feeling "bullied" or "stalked" or "mobbed" by a like button being pressed really needs to turn off the computer / phone and step away.

As I said, it's used in combination with the wording of the posts. People can be quite subtle. You may not perceive it. But there's a lot of subtle communication going on.

Yes maybe but you also find those that bleat the most aren't so sweet/innocent/perfect themselves.

Can you change the like button to Jaffa Cake button?
That would solve the problem :)
And every time its pushed a dozen Jaffa cakes rain down in the staff room, yep that could work

TBH we the staff have seen it used quite a lot in the past as a "weapon"
especially after a thread has been locked.

Its a tough call TBH. Yes some people are too sensitive for their own good at times,
but at other times its easy (for us greenies) to see how some people are silently baiting others.

Maybe those you are thinking of aren't. But there is a variety of different things going on here.

.

Its probably not practical on xen , or would be too much hand coding for Marcy, but on some other forums when a thread is locked the Like button is disabled along with the rest. I dunno if that might be an option here.

The other thing is that its main usefulness (as its 'sposed to be used) is in the crit forum to acknowledge crit, so is it possible to only have it active in that sector of the boards and dectivated in say OOF where its main 'weaponised' useage seems to be

Who has ever been either sweet or innocent? There's certainly never been anyone perfect..

One area was a photo sharing area, albeit a while ago now.

It's swings and round abouts, I could live happily enough without it tbh.

I don't think anyone is claiming to be sweet , innocent, or perfect - that would be an exercise in futility as the green team are fully aware of what each of us is like, and for example in my case I've openly acknowledged that I do have the potential to be a full metal jacket weapons grade bell end at times.

However what I don't do is hide behind other people - If I dislike someone or have a problem with them they'll be well aware of the fact and why, to their face, in post or pm. Also if I happen to report them for for example trashing a crit thread , it will be because I've dropped into that thread to give crit , not because I'm busy checking out all their posts to see if theres anything worth reporting - in all honesty life is far too short for that kind of crap.

I know it is a offense met by severe punishment, but eh I prefer Oreo cookies :)

I'm amazed by some of the subsequent posts. Do people really go back into locked threads to take a look at the likes someone else may have received. Seriously? Can't say it ever crossed my mind.

Its not something i'd make a habit of - but i'd guess the mods can't help noticing

I suppose the key point returning to the OP is if a minority of people are sad enough to use the like button as a 'weapon' - and it seems they are, then a 'dislike' button is going to be far more open to abuse.

It also depends on the forum vibe - another forum i go on regularly has a much more 'blunt and honest' vibe , and indeed features a choice of w****r smileys (and other obscene gestures) - there a dislike buton might be fine , indeed a "f*** off and die horribly" button would save a lot of time, however I can't see it being helpful for the sort of atmos that TP is trying to acheive

Its something that has been discussed in the passed, the jury is still out on it.

Its more a case of "liking" a post, after a thread has been closed to carry on the argument ;)

I think that happens unintentionally, I know I do that. And it isn't until I've typed an answer and hit reply that I notice it is locked. Flipping annoying that is. Now if we had a dislike button the last moderator might get one :p

That's your name added to the staffroom toilet walls :D

I bet they;d be pleased to be relieved of RTMs too......I'm not one, but I can imagine.

I'm not sure what your point is - I don't make a habit of RTM either , as i said to matty two in the last week (one at the request of the person reported) is hardly an avalanche... I don't report anyone unless they are either way out of line and/or in breach of the rules (I'd suspect most people adhere to that standard - excepting a few sad cases), so if someone is butt hurt about having been RTM'd maybe they should look in at their own behaviour instead of blaming the person who reported them

It would also be good if someone has a problem about RTM if they just say so - this "guess the point" style of posting is getting a bit old.

I've rtm'd twice as long as I've been a member.
Once for spam. ..once for a funny.
What's your record?

not really relevant you two, RTM's are neither a badge of honour nor grassing to the teacher, they are just a quick way of letting us know about something, bad or good! So back to the point perhaps? :)

Happy to.

I like the 'like' button I use it for nothing other than liking a post, no cliques, well not for me, If I read something I like I will 'like' it. :)

well it had to be done ;)

While the "like" option here at TP doesn't really bother me, it does more so in Facebook where there are a number of people on my facebook friends list who treats the "Like" button like a machine gun - hence how sometimes I wake up to something like 50-plus notifications on my wall and 46 of them are my past comments and statuses that has suddenly been "like"d by one person overnight.
Usually a quiet private message to that person containing a gentle bit of advice sorts that out. Of course, it may also help if I don't post quite so often in facebook in the first place! But tricky when I run a weather page in there and that attracts a fair bit of attention, especially at this time of the year. Same goes for my doodles.
I used to be on a funny weather page on FB, but I think I posted something they didn't like so they ban me from commenting so I left lol. What the name of yours?

Bloody trouble maker that sounds about right :p

I use the like button a lot, especially if someone has had the curtousy to crit my images or reply in one of my threads. As said you don't want to keep writing thanks all the time. At the end of the day its a like button for letting people know you like something. If its advice, a point of view, a crit, comment, what harm does it do?

As for oof, I have views on things but I've tried arguing my points in that section but people just don't know when to admit that I am right and they aren't so are beyond help, so I don't bother anymore :p

none used properly - maybe we should turn it into a thanks button , which would make a nonsense of the weaponising .

With regard to OOF - imo we could lose 99% of the bad feeling if the powers that be turned that off. If people want political arguments etc or pointless banter theres plenty of other places on the net for that... or even the chat room for the latter
