I'm sure many of you who have your own domain names would agree that trying to settle on a domain name is sometimes harder than trying to build a website. I've been considering putting a site together prhaps for a gallery and maybe other things later, I don't have a problem with the html side of things etc. it's not a business site and will not be selling from it tho' who knows what could happen in the future.
Problem is settling on a domain name, I've had few suggestions and a lot of them no use cos their already taken. I'd be interested in any opinions on using actual names for example 1st & maybe 2nd intial followed by surname.co.uk/com...jbloggs.co.uk.
Would this be a preferable method to use so the domain name could be used for any purpose, trying to think of alternatives is mind boggling especially when most of your ideas have already been used or taken :suspect:

I had a nightmare trying to think of a domain name when I originally started a website in 2000. I've still got it registered although I don't actually use it. I've since gathered a collection of domain names and fortunately secured 2 .info domains when they originally came out, 1 with my town name and 1 with surname so I've recently started working on my surname website as my photo gallery.

Buy the one you like the most just now, and if need be you can always purchase extra domains pointing to the same website.

I went through a stage of registering one for every new toy I had [cars, bikes and the like] so had in the region of 40-50 at one point :| I've now thinned it to 3 or 4 which I chose for their relevance either to the subject or to myself.

Think hard, find something that either refers to the subject or is simply easy to remember. Make it nice and short and an obvious spelling and you should be fine :)

and get someone to check it
there's some real howlers out there

pen island dot com
gen italia dot com

to name but 2!!!!

funny coincidence is I just migrated away from Pipex and they own a domain name with my first initial and surname.co.uk, how spooky is that. Wonder if they'd sell it, probably want me to join them, again:lol:

trouble is when i put the url of my initial and surname into the browser it goes to 123-reg website. to contact them I have to join up which I dont want to do.

we've got smith-residence.com. we were getting fed up of losing email addresses with every move from an ISP so bought that domain name. no website yet, but one simple email solution.
