Doing whatever it takes to get the shot

Haha, all the fake brigade, apologise now...

Quite clearly real, unless he has waaaaay to much photoshopping time. What would be the point?

Even top gear got that close to lava in a car, why do people instantly assume everything they see is fake these days. So annoying!

I take it all those video clips and photos you see of people standing at the mouth of a volcano with lava bubbling away below them are fake too?

It's fake!

A bit OTT .. thousands of pictures get posted on TP .. this is the first I recall being called fake...

Have you seen the other photos from this series on the Facebook page, and all his videos of close up lava with a gopro.. The bloke is a nutter and quite clearly enjoys doing silly things near lethal molten lava.

I'm not on about TP in particular, just generally.. Everytime there is a photo or video that's a bit different or exciting, people immediately scream fake, or photoshop.

If it's real (and that's a big if) then I'm not apologising, I'm just reverting back to my original view that he needs a good slapping for being so stupid. That isn't being creative or adventurous, it's being monumentally irresponsible.

Yep, just a tad irritating isn't it!

That's because a lot of the time the shots /videos are fake - do you really think anyone would stand their calmly taking pictures while their tripod and shoes caught fire ? seriously ?

Also if it was hot enough for a tripod to burn the plastic on the camera attached to it would be melting.

and if the lava was hot enough to ignite a tripod the top surface would still be soft and his feet would be sinking in to it with extremly serious consequences

(there are some people who take great shots of lava - there was a feature on a couple of guys on hawai in digital photographer a while back) - but they were serious pro's , this guys just an irresponsible walter mitty

i'm not saying that he doesnt get close to lava - lots of people do on a regular basis - but that particular shot is faker than a fake thing - either done with photoshop , or staged by putting something much more easily ignitable where he wanted the flames and staging the shot on cooler lava

His facebook does indeed show lots of shots with lava - all of them apart from that one taken for a reasonable distance so they are hardly proof of this ones veracity

If you read what the guy posted about the shot, you would know this is exactly what didn't happen

First point is possible - although it would depend on other factors. Can't say I agree with the second though. Rock can be very hot - hot enough to do just this - and still be remarkably solid.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Again, read the piece I posted from his facebook. He openly says it was staged.

Look again, or maybe at his flickr. This guy gets seriously close.

Wrong!

Lava creates a pretty thick crust, which can be walked on within seconds of cooling.

I think the distinction is between the shot being staged and faked, the former meaning he probably sprayed an accelerant such as lighter fluid on his shoes and tripod in order to get the flames in the picture rather than faking it by adding the flames in photoshop later.

that still pretty fake really - real would mean that it ignited spontaneously because he was "doing anything to get the shot" as per the OP - any chucklehead can set fire to their tripod and shoes , although most of us would have more sense

Interesting picture, but a little foolish imo! Now, what became of the guy taking the photo of him I wonder...?

I honestly think that's fake. The fire looks odd, like its laid on top or something. Wait let me light my shoe and snap a shot for comparison.NOT!

It is fake... Too many gullible people on TP... its getting like facebook now .. trust what you know.. dont be fooled :)

So if he openly admits it was staged why are you three arguing that its genuine ?

I am merely pointing out what I have read.

If it is staged, it is still a genuine photograph. ie he was standing on the lava and stuff caught fire. As against flames being added in photoshop...

It's really only about as irritating as people jumping on the "Ha, told you it's not fake!" bandwagon ... as if it mattered to their lives.

Not really, and over dramatising a bet? Yea...

How many amazing photos do you see posted in other places where people respond with 'photoshop' but you absolutely know it isn't? I know I have seen plenty.
