Eek!

Ouch... That is dedication :-(

This looks fake to me...

Could he not have set light to his tripod and shoes "for effect" ?

You think he looks bad....you should see the state of the person taking the photo of him.

Fake

If he were that close he would have been well and truly dead and not standing taking a picture ;)

Medal? I think not. If he was a serious professional, I think he's be wearing something more substantial than a pair of trainers to stand on a lava flow.

He's an idiot.. if that got out of hand, how much money would the rescue have cost? Assuming he COULD be rescued, who pays for the helicopter and the medical help required to save his sorry ass.

That's brought a whole new meaning to hot shoes in photography terms.

I wouldn't worry about him, it is fake

Temperatures reach anywhere from 700°C to 1,200°C so he would have been well and truly "cooked" had he really been stood there.

And then there is the toxic gas

Keith is right, shows how easy it is to fake a convincing photo though!

I'd do something with a risk of breaking a leg, but not my neck. Well, although people have broken their necks from tiny falls, but... You know, general common sense of which is likely.

Hard to enjoy an amazing photo if you're, you know, dead.

Oh... Great respect for those who are in war zones, that's a bit different because it's photographing current news and future history, not just trying for a better sunset.

Maybe that is fake.. But surely someone must have taken the picture of the lava to superimpose him onto.. I guess that was a fake photo too as if he couldnt be stood there to make the fake photo, then the person who took the background of the fake photo couldnt be stood there either, so therefore in reality the whole image just doesn't exist and is a figment of our imagination.

Fake maybe :D,but i have done some pretty stupid things to get a shot, when my camera go up to eye you be surprised how much you switch yourself off to want else is going on around :)

That is why we need lightning fast focusing. You just run across the lava shouting "cool wet grass" taking shots as you run.

If its hot enough to make a tripod burst into flame, do they even burn?, then he would be a fireball.

This loosely reminded me of the scene in The Croods where Crug[?] tells his son to run into the long grass to put out the fire on his backside, the grass just tears into flames :D

I love the way this picture has turn everyone into expert volcanologists and scientists.

Everyone? I didn't even comment on the image. Which to me, looks faked as funk. I don't think you need be an expert to realise trainers wouldn't last 2 seconds on hot volcanic rock.

The basalt he is standing on crystallises at about 1000 degrees centigrade and can still be hundreds of degrees without glowing red. It is possible to stand on lava in this state (I have done so myself on a field trip in Hawaii) though it can and does melt the soles of your boots. This is more likely than them catching fire.

The biggest problem (amongst several in this environment) he would have is dehydration; it is like standing in an oven.

This is a quote from the guy on facebook

Always trying to be creative,I thought it would be pretty cool(hot!)to take a lava pic with my shoes and tripod on fire while photographing lava so that's what I did that's real lava real flames and it was really hot! I could stand the heat only for a few seconds.

Don't think so

Everyone?

I am just amazed that anyone thought it was real ... expert? if seeing this image and instantly knowing its a fake makes me an expert volcanologists and scientists then i will gladly add it to my CV :)
