If the "General Conditions" were in the bumf they sent you before you signed up and state a distance, you may not have a leg to stand on, although such terms could be considered unfairly strict. I would make all the people who you know who are insured through the company concerned that they aren't paying your claim and why and let the friends decide if they want to vote with their feet at renewal time...

General Conditions: 13.1.3 Quote "When walking your pet in an area other than a designated road, you must ensure that your pet remains under your control and reasonable steps must be taken to prevent your pet escaping onto a designated road. When nearing a road you must ensure your pet is on a lead"

They're saying that due to that general condition they feel that Skye did not remain under my control & reasonable steps were not taken by me to prevent her escaping onto a designated road.

No specific distance stated. When I phoned them yesterday they said I could be 1/2 mile from a road & if the animal ran off they wouldn't cover it. In some ways it seems a 'catch-all' condition, and possibly a play on words and interpretation. I was walking in an area "other than a designated road", about 150yds from, when I released her. At that point, on release, in my mind she is then NOT under control and nor is any animal if not tethered. I'll see what happens with my appeal. Lol.

Just looked at this thread glad Skye is ok but not good news regard your insurance company. My JR is insured with them too might have to change my insurance company, anyway I hope the FO can help in some way.

Yes out of character and don't know what she went after as she never made it and taking them literally then no dog is covered

Bruce, I am really glad Skye is recovering well, I know what a worry they can be, having lost both my GSDs over the last two years.
With regards to insurance, any money you have paid out for the car repair may be claimable on your house insurance under 'public liability', it may at least be worth a try. With regard to pet insurance I think you have to fully exhaust the insurance company's own appeals procedure before going to the ombudsman.

If you have twitter and/or facebook I would certainly post on there about the insurance company refusing your claim. Many companies, in all industries, pay people to monitor the main social network media to pick up potentially damaging stories as well as good PR opportunities. I know people who have had success with a big mobile phone company and a supermarket by following this route.

I don't have either of these. Personally can't stand them but I understand what your saying. I have requested a reassessment from the AF Insurance, effectively an appeal & they've acknowledged receiving it so will await the outcome before proceeding with the FO.

Well, some good news.

Received a letter from AF Insurance today and quote....."after considering your case we are prepared to give you the benefit of the doubt and will settle your claim" etc etc.

Cheeky b.....ds giving me the benefit of the doubt.

Anyway. A story with a happy ending. Thanks all of you for your kind comments and advice. Skye and I really appreciated it.

I used LV for my last dog and had £6k of claims over 3 years. All paid promptly and without argument, which was excellent. Having said that, my vet maintains that overall Petplan are the least trouble. I hope to be blessed with a pup fairly soon and intend to use Petplan because of other advantages within the policy (e.g. larger amount payable per condition).

For anyone taking out insurance for the first time, and not knowing what insurer to use, I would recommend asking your vet. Vets help process hundreds of claims and know what insurers are part of the "give you an umbrella when it is not raining brigade".

Bruce ............ glad you are getting a payout. Take the money and ignore the silly comment from the insurer. You are possibly thinking of changing insurer. Don't think a new insurer would cover you for anything that may develop from your dog's injuries. Just something to be aware of. All the best to your dog.

It's my understanding that that vets recommend pet plan insurance based on the financial incentives received rather than how wonderful they consider the cover. Similar to dentists and denplan.

Don't know about that. My vet is the Wingrave Group in Surrey. Very good and I believe do a lot of their own tests.

Yes, think your right on that, AF have placed an endorsement on the policy preventing any further claim from this injury for a period of 12 months

Or Ex Petplan sales reps who insures their own pets with Petplan Or admin who deals with claims. I've even had a conversation with a rep from a different insurance provider who said their pets were insured with Petplan.
My info isn't from just "who would you recommend for pet insurance" It's from real world claims being paid, ease of use etc etc
They may get incentives but when I've mentioned it in passing stood infront of another providers sales media and they whisper PetPlan it kinda says somthing.
