Sounding very promising. Wishing a continued recovery x

Just came across this thread, glad to hear she is doing well and looks like making a full recovery. I'm also a lab owner as per my avatar, and we also had the wee collie, Izzy, up until 6 weeks ago when we sadly lost her at only 2 1/2 years old. It breaks your heart:(

That is a hellish young age to lose a dog. Dogs do not get much of a long life. It really is awful. In no time they wrap themselves around your heart then they are gone. Loss of a dog is so hard to take. I have lost parents and lost a wife and lost dogs. Losing dogs has been the worst with which to cope.

Glad to hear Skye is making progress.

I mentioned my lab (post op) earlier in the thread but couldn't find the pic.

She (Breagh) had Bloat / GDV at an early age and after a lfe saving op was touch and go for a few days before coming home.....

Sorry for hijacking this thread. This is Izzy in happier times

I was looking after her mther for a friend as they were away on hols when she had 7 pups. My wife picked Izzy out at 1 day old. She and my lab Jess were best friends. I spend a good bit of my spare time hiking in the mountains, the most we did in 1day last year was 21 miles over 14 peaks and Izzy was still running round the house like a lunatic when we got home. So fit and so quick and smart. Turns out the mountains were to kill her. She cut her foot and picked up an infection in it in january, infection spread through her, could have taken her leg off but she was too weak, on a drip for 4 days as her liver struggled to cope but we had to give up and put her to sleep 6 days after it happened. Cautionary tale for everyone, if your dog gets the slightest cut, get it looked at.

Sad tale. Makes my Skye's woes pale by comparison. All I can say is my dog is bloody lucky. She's back to the vets on Tuesday for removal of stitches and a further blood test for her liver

Well, back to vets tomorrow for stitches removal and further blood test. Can't stop her licking her wounds so expect bowl licking fro vet. If she doesn't lick them her soul mate does. Can't win!

CoS for her mate as well

What a life :D

Bruce, you can stop the licking. Plastic collar and keep the two dogs apart for now (unpleasant, but not all that hard to do). If the wound breaks down (as licking can cause it ti do) then problems will magnify greatly, and very quickly. Just not worth the risk. You could end up with your dog hospitalised.

Thanks Doug. I've put a C of S on her and her soul mate is coming upstairs tonight

You seriously didn't think of that ????

Correct I didn't, and at the time of penning this don't think there's many places I'd get one at this time of night but as they say, tomorrow is another day;)

That's certainly true - have fun tomorrow .

What's even funnier I found was putting food and water dishes where they could actually be used :) - for our stupid Dalmatian his dishes had to go on a stool so his CoS would go round the dishes - one stool for each dish of course. Now for two dogs .......

have fun :D

Skye has had her stitches out and barring the result of her latest blood test for her liver has been given the all clear to commence exercise off the lead (10 minutes only).

Insurance claim submitted, and a small C of S purchased for the JRT (assuming I'll need it in the future).

That is great news!

...and demonstrates the value of insurance "just in case"

That all sounds like good news [ well apart from a precautionary CoS for the smaller pooch  ]

Yes hopefully. I genuinely hadn't thought about a CoS for the JRT until you mentioned it last night. Wished you'd come in earlier now;)

I did - but I forgot about the smaller pooch :(

We only had the one exceeding stupid dog [ believe me Dalmatians are stupid , very very slow learners but full of low cunning ] who still didn't know his name when he was 7 !! err and he still didn't when he departed this life either ! Did I say he was stupid ? If you called' stupid' he came at a fast run !! I was so used to coping with him that I forgot how a 'normal' dog behaves.

As a carriage dog - he was superb ! [ but he had to be attached to a long flexi lead because he didn't know his name :puke: ]

Really so pleased to hear Skye is making good progress - sounds like she's lucky to have such an attentive owner - well done both.

Great to hear that the outcome is looking positive. Must be a huge relief.

Dogs ............... loads of worry with them ..................... great companions when all is well.

You're not wrong there. Her latest blood test result is good. Her liver bloods are now around the 140 mark and vet happy to leave it at that. On the evening following the accident they were over 1k. The one thing I've got to watch is for lameness in her front legs. I've noticed when she gets up after prolonged rest she's really stiff and grunts when she puts her weight on her front legs. Vet says if it doesn't improve to bring her back for x-rays which means putting her out. Possibility of a 'green grass' fracture apparently

I hesitate to say "bump", but how's woofer doing, Bruce?

Thanks for asking Jonathan. She's much better thanks. I've started, as of this week, taking her and her soul mate the JRT out on their normal walks with required tennis balls and thrower. She's very keen on this and more than happy to run around.
I've noticed though that afterwards, by the time she's rested up she does appear stiff and I'm monitoring this to see if its getting worse or not.
Vet has said to bring her back if no improvement and any treatment will be done under the original claim.

Good! :banana::clap: (y)

And what about the poor car she attacked? :p

Bit of a kick in the preverbials this afternoon. Post arrived. Letter from Pet Insurance company stating that after due consideration they're declining payment of my claim, all £820 of it. Ouch!!!!

They say in their letter that as the accident arose because she ran off, that I obviously didn't have her under control and that as it occurred on a 'designated road' I should have been aware of the roads proximity (about 150 yards away when I let her off her lead), and therefore should have had her on a lead.

I have rung them but they're not changing their mind. Interestingly I asked that if I'd released her 1/2 mile into the park and she'd run off would that have made a difference? No was their answer, its all in the 'General Conditions' I've queried their 'conditions' on the basis that they are really a get out clause for effectively every occurrence apart from illness.

For whats its worth I'm appealing against the finding but not holding out too much hope but might go to the Financial Ombudsman if not satisfied although I don't really know what they can do.

What insurance company, Bruce ?

Animal Friends is their name. I've since spoken to the Financial Ombudsman office. Open until 8pm daily. They tell me AF are effectively a broker. Red Sands is the parent company. Head office in Gibralter. Not impressed at the moment. Went with AF as a lot of my friends with pets are with them and have not had any issues with claims.

Bloody insurance companies, they really are a shower of arseholes.

Urgh - that's nasty .

Being honest - with all your vet has done , including the after care, I think the bill is actually quite reasonable but that doesn't make it less painful for you.

If the "General Conditions" were in the bumf they sent you before you signed up and state a distance, you may not have a leg to stand on, although such terms could be considered unfairly strict. I would make all the people who you know who are insured through the company concerned that they aren't paying your claim and why and let the friends decide if they want to vote with their feet at renewal time...

will also copy if its ok, i have a lot of friends who have Animal friends insurance
