Dog Hit this morning

Great news so far. I'm in Thailand, was speaking to a monk in the temple this morning where there are lots of dogs around, and told him about your dog. That cost me a few baht and a splashing of water, but he blessed your dog in absence and told me he'd be fine.
Cheaper than vets bills :)
 
Just picked up on this thread and didn't want to read and run, as a dog owner myself. Really sorry about what's happened to Skye and glad the news is getting a bit better. It always amazes me how resilient animals can be at times like this. She has loving and caring owners and is getting the best of care. I'm sure she'll pull through. Stay strong.
 
I'm another joining this thread late. We've got two spaniels who have both been in the wars with surgery although nothing to this scale. I do hope these signs of recovery continue for you. Hopefully she can be home soon albeit with lots of restrictions.
 
Well great news from the vet. Skye was up and about this morning and quite lively (she's only 4 so still a pup!), walking well etc but more importantly her liver blood count is coming down.

On Wednesday when the accident happened, it was over 1000. 1000 what's I don't know. Today it is around 800. It should be 100. Vet says she can come home this evening. Not wanting to be a kill joy ( I really do love her to bits, not that it shows), I did ask if it's not too early to bring her home, but vet quite happy. I'm not working next week so she won't be alone and her soul mate is over the moon. She's had some stitches in her leg wounds which will be removed in 10 days or so.
Picking her up at 5.15 and taking my debit card!!!!!!! So what it's only money. I did think about posting some pictures but two things. Firstly I don't know how to and secondly I don't suppose its tasteful.
Anyway, I'm happy. Hopefully she will be. Her soul mate definitely will be. Not sure about the cat though.

The liver blood count is something I can explain :)

If you're interested anyway! So basically, the liver excretes specific enzymes which must maintain a certain level to function optimally. When the liver malfunctions these enzymes rise. If the level of secretion goes beyond the normal level and acceptable margin, there can be underlying health issues. In saying that, as a defensive mechanism, after a severe trauma the levels can fluctuate as the dogs body copes with the trauma.

If the vet is happy to send her home I'd be popping the cork on a bottle of champagne.

Pleased to hear she's coming home. I feel for you and also the girl in the car. I'd be hysterical if I hit a cat or dog.

SHE's HOME!!!!!!!

One sorry Labrador now home. Strict regime to be enforced!!! Plenty of rest, no excitement, no proper exercise except on a lead and for no more than 15 minutes at a time. Plenty of pills too and trying to disguise it as food doesn't work with her. She's not that stupid. Skye has to go back on Tuesday for a further blood test on/for her liver bloods and stitches out in two weeks. Long term prognosis is good but I'm going to take it one day at a time. The problem is stopping her from getting excited. She'd be a good storyline for any one wanting to do a photographic study come diary. Cost for the last two days £740 and rising. Mans best friend is an expensive commodity (but worth every penny to me).
 
Does she have to wear The Cone of Shame ? ;)

Poor wee thing - life is not going to be easy for a while , but she'll do better now she's home with you all

Fortunately not. My last one did and the furniture suffered as a consequence, certainly until his peripheral vision adjusted. However, if she doesn't stop licking her wounds, which she is doing right now, then she will.

Sounds like a period of pampering if she's anything like my lab was post op
 
Just read this and glad Skye is home. Hopefully a speedy and full recovery.

£760 and rising however if insured should be covered. Things like this is what ins is for.

Vets bills can be shocking. Our cat cut it's paw quite badly a couple of years back. Rang the out of hours vet (i am talking 6.30 on a weekday, they shut at 6 - not lunchtime xmas day) We live about a 3 min drive from the vet and she was there before us! (Probably hadn't even left)... on top of treatment, £150 out of hours call out fee. Not bad for 15 mins!
 
Bruce - for our Dalmatian we made a very wide foam collar about 2ins thick , so he couldn't turn his neck and head , covered it wit a scrap of old soft cotton and used that instead of the CofS it meant he could see properly and get through doors :D but he couldn't lick - that was after he had been snipped :D

Vet was highly amused when he saw it - but it worked :D
 
good news, we've got two of the buggers and much as I complain about them I wouldn't want to be without them :)
 
Just read this thread, sorry to hear she was run over. . . but so glad she,s on the mend. me and my girlfriend have a black lab, Millie and our black lab/type/dog/thingy Amba, worse than kids but love them to bits. . . fingers crossed for skye and you mate. . . . .
 
Back from my beer & curry. Skye has been fine tonight so far but does appear depressed ( until biscuits are mentioned), after which she's a different dog. Her soulmate, the JRT, is keen on her wounds and keeps licking them.trying to control this is a real pain

Normal then!

Can you rig up a t-shirt (or similar) to cover the wounds? Soft cotton is best, and as close fitting as you can.

Like that idea. Might also use an old pair of socks for her wrists as they're quite badly cut.

Well, try as I might, with various contraptions tried and failed, I've had to take Skye back to the vet and she now wears the C of S. Having brought her home the JRT is scared s...less and looks like will be sleeping with us upstairs. Personally I think its a ruse. The wife doesn't.

I suggested to said wife that perhaps the JRT should have the collar as it's her whose doing the majority of the licking not Skye. It's been suggested that perhaps I sleep with Skye. It's a consideration I haven't yet discounted.

Whatever the price, it is worth paying. You don't want the would breaking down. Must be no licking - esp. by another dog.
 
Hey Bruce, ive felt your pain, we lost out long time best pal to Liver Disease 3 years ago and now have a Labrador, dont want to go through anything like that again, great that skye seems to be on the mend.

It could be platelets, secreted by the liver when there is injury to help heal wounds....it's just chemicals that help the clot form at the site of injury...Alkaline phosphatase will also be all over the place but these number tells me it's more likely to be the platelet count.

Thanks for your comments. When I took her back yesterday for the C of S, a further blood test was taken for her liver. I've heard nothing so looking at is no news being good news
 
Had a call from the vets today about her blood tests. Still high so they want to see her again Friday morning. She seems happy though (apart from the C of S).
 
Can she get DogTV on the satellite dish?

I was following a dog groomer today called "The Furry Dogmother" :D
 
Back to the vets today. Liver bloods down to 410. Back Tuesday for stitches removal.
