I hope you don't mind me putting this's on here but absolutely gutted at the moment.

My Labrador bitch 'Skye' (that's her in my avatar), was hit by a car this morning whilst out with me. She's in a critical but stable condition at my vets and I'm devastated. Car and driver fine which is a good thing.

I love her to bits and it's at times like this that it really hits home.

Her soul mate is my other dog, a Jack Russell bitch. (She's also in the avatar and was just 12 weeks old then). She hasn't stopped whining. God knows what tonight's going to be like.

Expecting a call from vet this evening. Fingers crossed.

I hope you receive some good news. Ill be keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Best wishes

Hope it works out fine and Skye makes a full recovery.

I'm sorry to hear this. We've always had cats, rather than dogs, but I'm fond of animals and the pain is the same for anyone in this situation. Keep us posted, and I hope all goes well for both of you.

Hope everything works out OK - will be thinking of Skye and you - we get so attached to them

Fingers crossed for her and you.

Sorry to hear about this - fingers crossed for Skye and hopefully your JRT will calm.

It's amazing how they get needy of each other. When I lost my last dog (Fingal) my other dog (also Skye) was unsettled for a while.

Thank you all very much. It really is appreciated. It's now 5.50pm and I'm waiting for a call with hopefully a positive update. It's the not knowing or being able to see her. That's getting me. Hey ho:(

Vets just called. Unfortunately no real improvement. She's had blood tests this afternoon. Most are ok but they're concerned about her liver. Cell count and enzyme levels are high whatever that means. Vet is hoping (and I'm praying), that it is as a result of the hit i.e.; bruising. They'll know more tomorrow. It seems somewhat ironic that only last week I put up a thread about camera insurance and value of gear etc. Skye is insured but I can't put a value on her. You pet lovers out there in the ether will know what I mean & once again thanks for your support.:ty:

Again, appreciate your comments. Her soul mate really lost tonight.:ty:

Hope all goes well overnight and the next day or so

Sending positive vibes. Thinking positively, Labradors are big dogs and if the car wasn't damaged that's got to be a good sign that Skye wasn't hit hard. Hopefully it's just bruising and a shaken up dog.

Just heard from the vet. Skye was able to stand this morning which is a good indicator that her pelvis isn't fractured. I've been left with no illusions that she's not out of danger. Vet made a point of saying that although she's responsive they've had it where animals show all the positive signs and then slump. Going to keep her at least until tomorrow and do more blood tests especially on her liver but there are no signs so far of any internal bleeding. Checked on the girl who hit her & she's ok now. Got £160 damage to her car. Her soul mate a little calmer today. Let her sleep with us last night. At least there wasn't any whining although for obvious reasons I didn't get a lot of sleep. Once again thanks to all of you who have responded. It really is comforting to get replies. Thanks.

Glad that its positive news so far. Really hope she get through this ok.

Glad it's on a positive not this morning, hopefully she will keep getting better from now on. Dogs are hardy I'm sure she'll be fine:)

I know what it's like having your dogs get hurt. My old Border Collie got beaten half to death by two youths. After 6months of going back and forth to the vets every week for countless operations and ££££'s to try and save him, the vets and I came to a mutual decision that he would be better off being put to sleep. There was just nothing else we could have done. Still miss him now and it's been 2years since it happened.

That's dreadful. Were the two youths caught?

No never caught. I have a rough guess who it is but no solid evidence. If they mess up and I do find out it is them, they will soon know about it:)

How's your dog doing now, any better from this morning?

Just spoken with a vet nurse whose just started nights on 'the ward'. They do seriously call it a ward. I almost asked what are visiting times and can I bring some flowers and fruit.
A She tells me Skye much better, walking quite well and apparently getting fed up in her kennel AND she could well come home tomorrow. That's a big change from this morning and, much as want her back, I hope her recovery is not too quick if you know what I mean. Vet will decide on that in the morning but if a nurse is happy with her then to me that's good. Fingers crossed that she's right.

Good luck with that and you have my full support

That is great news! :woot:

Worth waiting a bit longer to be 100% though.

I agree with you, hence my comment. I'll obviously be guided by the vet. I do trust them as all my animals have been to them over the years so know them well. Thanks for the reply.

 Still thinking of you and fingers crossed that there's more good news tomorrow.

I was just about to ask what sort of total scum could do something like that . . . then I remembered the state that Stella was in when we got her through the rescue centre* and unfortunately I have a pretty good idea of exactly what sort of scum is out there.

* p.s. I mean the state that she was due to her previous owners' treatment not from anything the rescue centre had done to her ;)

That's good to hear. They are hardy creatures and can put up with a lot. She'll soon be home:)

With my old dog, the first operation was to try and save his broken leg. He basically had his whole leg full of metal plates and pins. After his op when he saw me it's as if he was fine. He tried jumping around like a fat puppy lol. The leg never did heal though even after a good couple of weeks so we had to amputate it and even after that he soon caught on and carried on as normal. It's not until a bit later on he started to develop a lot of internal problems and he was in too much pain to keep him alive, I could tell he had just given up, but until that point he was a fighter.

All this I've been saying about dogs being hardy and then there's me winging away in another thread about toothache haha. Doesn't say much for me does it:rolleyes:

Be sure to visit your dog as much as possible. I have had dogs in Glasgow Universirty Small Animals Hospital (very expensive, but a class act insofar as vet treatment is concerned) for serious problems and also my dogs have had major surgery at my lovcal vets. Both the Uni. and my local vet stressed the benefit of visits and recupperation at home. The advice was totally sound and recovery was excellent. Spend as much time as possible with your ill dog.

All the best.

Good luck, Bruce.

Sending a tonne if hugs and keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for Skye. And wine and choccies for you!

On the visiting animals in the vet post surgery, for some it can be good but for most it is counter productive. If the animal needs to keep still and quiet, getting excited and bouncing around because they're happy to see their owner can cause a lot of damage. In some cases it can be the difference between recovery and non-recovery.

Appreciate your comments particularly about visiting. I didn't bother mentioning it above, but, when I spoke with the vet this morning I asked about visiting her and was advised not to so as to keep her calm and prevent unnecessary excitement. I can see the benefits both ways and didn't force the issue. Anyway, I'll hopefully know tomorrow about her coming home and presently I'm home 24/7 so will have the time to spend on/with her.
I suspect it will be a case of take her home, no walks for a few days, just let her in the garden, don't let her lick her wounds, don't let her soul mate lick her wounds, don't let her get excited etc etc.
I'm beginning to sound like a vet now so will sign off and hopefully update tomorrow. Once again, thanks for your comments. :ty:
