Doesn't do anything for me photos

yes they do, I've owned one

you have to "drive it round" not turn it sharply :p

my father had one - drove it into SE London every day where he taught

he NEVER EVER allowed me to drive it EVER..........:cuckoo:

I really like portraits, but don't take them for the exact reason you state - reluctance to have someone else there while I bumble about trying to sort out lighting and get very embarrased asking them to pose.

I hate to tell you Mark but you are a portrait photographer in the making!

I know exactly that feeling and if you can overcome it you have a whole world on the other side waiting for you. Don't let it get in the way! I spent half my lifetime avoiding doing exactly what I should have been doing. Cast that aside and just go and do it!

All you need is Bruce. :)

Pretty much Motorsports, Birds and Animals for me - just have that "seen one-seen 'em all" feeling with them. Not over keen on people photography either - the thinly veiled commercials from certain pro's get an instant ignore filter in my head, shots of peoples children/wife/mother/father/insert random relative here mean nothing to me - I acknowledge they are important to the person who posted 'em, but why do I need to see 'em.

Then again, when I used to work in an office, I'd return from holiday with 10 rolls of film, drop them off to be processed, and pick 'em up the next day. When back in the office, i'd get pestered for a look by everyone - who would invariably say after the third roll "But there's nobody IN these pictures!" To which i'd reply "If I wanted to shoot people, I'd resign from here, and join the Army!"

Nothing in general...however I have a dislike for the cliché shots mainly found in landscape photo's. I've taken many myself and every time I keep thinking that this has been done to death and I need to find something different.

But if I think a photograph is good regardless of the subject then that's the crux of the matter right there.

I skip right over baby set ups, cant see whats cute about seeing a dangling sleeping newborn baby in a hand knitted cocoony hammock thing!

+1

I know your a proud mum or dad, but they are just pink and wrinkled (new born that is)

thats porn TBH

Must admit, I've only ventured into that forum probably about 3 times in total in over 1000 posts I've been here.

But I have no problem with Nude photography. Here is my favourite nude photographer:

...
Love his photos. :D

I know, I've had two and never turned either over, my second would do 85 mph easily and it used to frighten the poo out of my passengers.

I was just jumping on the latest Top Gear bandwagon to raise a smile :p

well we agree to completely disagree.

looking at any section of his work I am inclined to say his work is not "artistic" or "provocative" in any way at all = merely pornographic

not disagreeing with your freedom to choose whom your prefer -- just not for me.

I agree. Mostly just open leg shots - where's the artistic talent in that?

I see that episode, someone needs to teach Jeromy how to drive one without turning it over

I can appreciate the time taken and skill in some photos, the skill of the photographer and the skill of the person who can use photoshop to enhance the shot. Personally i don't like HDR as it seems to make a real subject look fake. I see loads of excellent photos on here, some are very samey samey but they are (to me) still technically brilliant.
Bugs, birds, passenger jets, family portraits are a few that i would personally not do myself unless i was getting paid :)

Bamburgh and Eilean Donan castles. So many tediously repetitive pictures littering the photography magazines all taken from exactly the same spot and with the same lighting.

You have to poodle around corners. It's a whole new driving technique (and yes I've rolled one in the past). :D

I have to say that once you get gynaecological then it's porn, not art.

pouting half clad girls with any of the stupid false looking corny poses - finger in lips, false boobs, cliche clothes, props

I'd go with food shots. There seems to be a bit of a following for it on flickr.

Photos of a cup of tea and biscuits do nothing for me atall.

Never thought I'd see the day that "open leg shots" and "a cup of tea and biscuits" were discussed on the same page :D

Ohh Err I'm off there in August and I am hoping to take a nice photo of Bamburgh castle. I can look at photos all day and say how nice they are but it's not the same if I haven't taken it myself  I'm sure there are many on here would feel the same no matter if tripod holes have worn into the rocks from over use :)

I used to say the same thing until I bit the bullet and started to take pics of people and now I'm an addict! ;) Is your reticence based on the same thing mine was? Reluctance to be in front of a real live person with a camera in your hand?

I never used to like photographing people at all, but my reasoning was because when I had my P&S I found it very difficult to get decent results. I'm thinking mainly lighting difficulties. A harsh flash right in the face of the subject etc. Perhaps I just didn't try hard enough with the equipment that I had, but it is undoubtably more difficult to get decent results with a P&S over a DSLR.

However, since getting a nifty fifty and a camera with reasonable high ISO performance, I've found myself shooting people more. Additionally, since getting a 430EX, and playing with bounce-flash, I'm rather chuffed with the results. I've now been practicing with some off-camera stuff, with a flash bracket and ETTL cable, and using fill-flash. (Also, I'm quite pleased with my macro results with the flash and off-camera gubbins too.) I now have some remote triggers on the way from HK, and I'm pretty keen to get some practice in with those. :)

I have been completely turned around now, and though I wouldn't turn my nose up at any type of photography (I am pretty new to all this, so I suppose I'm yet to find a niche), I am really, very much enjoying photographing people at the moment.

So that's my reasoning anyway. :)

I avoid the bugs and creepy crawlies section - seeing them huge on screen scares me :)

I think it's sad if people just disregard types of photos due to their genre rather than because of what's in the photo or the way it's presented.

I can understand people being more interested in particular areas, but I have yet to find an area of photography that I havent seen some amazing pieces of work in.

I agree. What I tend to find is I obviously have more interest in taking certain types of pictures than other, but to write them off is a mistake in my opinion. Each picture can add to a memorise portfolio of ideas that can be put to use in different shots but rather than copying - using multipe ideas as a combination. Or at least - thats how I'm doing it :geek:

100% Agree.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as clearly illustrated in this post:

Why do you assume "humanity" is missing from shots involving aircraft or race machinery? People designed and built then and used them - there's plenty of humanity in there if you know where to look (for example my latest set posted on here don't contain any things racing on tarmac - go take a look).

Also, the machinery itself can evoke an emotional response - just because you aren't someone who feels like that doesn't mean to say it doesn't happen for others....

Indeed.

I think it's just a case of preferences being undermined for amusement here really.

Someone said that self portraits are vain. I used to think this when I was younger too. To put it bluntly, if you had a shoot and I turned up as your model, it'd be 'What the hell is this?'
But now I have many self portraits, I'm over weight, I have awful skin and I'm losing my hair.

There are many reason why I take a portrait of myself sometimes but vanity couldn't be further from the truth.

This doesn't mean to say that vanity isn't the motivation for some, but to say all self portraits are created as a result of vanity? How could every self portrait that ever was or is, be the result of a single state of mind or motivation?

Developing your own style and defining your own taste is a healthy practise after all, thank the skies we all have different and opposing preferences.

Imagine what it would be like if we all liked precisely the same things...........

....I think someone spiked my coffee....

Overprocessed shots (HDR and colour popping mainly)
Babies. Not got (and don't want) any of my own and don't really want to see other people's.
Weddings.
Porn (it's not really a spectator sport, is it?)

Go for it. I'd do exactly the same thing myself if I were there too :D
