Just getting started in photography and managed to get a couple of pics that I was happy with so shot off down the local lab and got them printed - happy with results but seemed expensive - pics were of my 3mth old son and as soon as grandparents saw the pics they all wanted a copy so decided to try Snapfish for some cheaper prints, just got them today and very dissapointed with the results - alot darker and more saturated - nowhere near as nice as the labs pics - I suppose what I'm asking is can you get good results at home with a photo printer (if so what ones) or do I have to keep paying high prices locally,or is there an alternative (other online printers etc)
Any help appreciated

wow, ditto!

I had just came on to ask this very exact question as I have some pics of my 3 week old son I would like to print and frame up for grandparents etc!

so any advice you will be helping out 2 people!

:D

I print my own but if i have 400+ holiday snaps then i use DSCL very competitive and great quality, to be 100% happy with the colour from them you can get a free print posted to you which you can then alter your monitor to get a good match, your system will then be calibrated to their printers, trouble with this is you could end up with a dark monitor for everything else but photographs!

I know my pics need to be a little brighter on the screen than i normally would do for DSCL so i just guess at it for the holiday prints and they come back more or less great, anything else i use a canon 9000i, its superb

I usually put the pics my missus wants printing on a disc and she takes it to
Jessops, the results have been quite good up to now.

I only print my own off if i want one or two bigger than say 7x5. Plus i can
tinker with the settings to get it to print how i want.

Just found that i have access to two HP A3 printers so i'm now installing the
drivers onto my laptop...

I tend to use a small local printer who's been running for 35 years, he may be slightly more expensive than your jessups and snapfish but you get a really good print from him and he's got my settings so I know when he prints a picture its what I'm seeing on my screen.
