Do you like to bash yours or give it a good polishing?

Yes
Not an original thought, but it came back to mind from reading another thread on here.

Some people like to be very protective of their gear. They are hesitant to take their camera out in the rain or dirty environments, and prefer to keep everything safely wrapped up until needed.

They have invested a lot of money and they are going to look after it and take no risks.

Then there is another sort of person who shoves their gear in a bag and leaves it there until needed. They do not care too much whether it gets scuffed or scratched, which is not to say they are careless.

They have invested a lot of money and they are going to make sure they make full use of it.

What are you?

Michael.

Shoot first, ask questions later. I will shoot in the rain even though my kit isn't weather sealed. I don't use a fancy cushioned camera bag either, just a manbag.

Does the fact mine is ballanced ontop of the telly and has a few scuffs on it answer your question? :p - think I might go the other way if I splash out on a 40D and a new lens later this year though.

I try and look after mine as much as possible, but when it comes down to it, its there to be used. Also as the 'newness' of a piece of kit wears off I tend to get prograssivly less protective of it.

I've got a padded Lowenthingy shoulder bag which keeps it reasonably protected. I clean it occasionally but as Pete says above, I'll take photos in the rain and on the beach with ill regard of the poor thing..

I hate new looking kit and all of my stuff gets treated like lump hammers with buttons. :D

All my kit gets treated with utmost TLC

My camera gets thrown in an unpadded bag and taken out when needed. Similar to pete i regularily shoot in absolute downpours dispite nothing being weather sealed. I also shoot a lot at rallys with stones and dust flying about the place, I shoot a lot at sailing events were i'm hanging out the side of a boat skimming the water just to get 'the' shot.

Im not overly delicate with the equipment because I feel it would hinder my shooting if i was always thinking about keeping it nice and clean, when you are tramping through muddy fields, jumping ditches and climbing barbed wire fences in torrential rain you cant really be overly worried about the camera :p

My Mk3 on it's first day out got wet and then covered in dust. I use Lens wet/dry cleaning kits to clean it when I've finished and it's packed away pretty secure.

Doing Supermoto/Powerboats you're out in the elements!

Carl.

I treat everything with loving care, clean it regularly, avoid scuffs and scratches, keep it in a padded bag, chant incantations over it to ward off evil spirits....

.... and then it becomes obsolete. :bang:

Would anyone like a 10D? It's immaculate, you know. :'(

I could swap you for one that isn't if it makes you feel any better? ;)

:agree:

But I won't use my camera in heavy rain...If it's drizzling, that's fine, but no more.

TLC for all my gear........................................

The way I see it I've invested a load of cash into my gear and want it to last for years to come. I always keep it in one of my Lowepro bags and I'm very conscientious about making sure it's kept fairly clean, at least where it matters - internals and lenses mostly. If the body gets a bit mucky I'm not so worried :)

I don't mind using it in 'poor' conditions and only a few weeks ago I was stood next to Peveril castle waiting for the pouring rain to stop (it never did :() I did make sure that the camera was out of the rain as much as possible with an improvised camera cover made out of a large freezer bag though.

Since my two most recent lenses have cost over a grand for the pair I don't want to see that cash go down the drain!

Both my gear is well looked after, it's always stored even on location in a water proof well padded camera bag. I clean it regurlarly.

However, it is used regardless of weather conditions, i have Gortex boots, trousers and coat, the camera has a Gortex lens cover, and nice camera cover so it dont get wet in the rain.

Mines not cossetted but I'm reasonably careful given the replacement cost.

I do have my "go anywhere, anytime any weather" lens.

It's the EF 35-350L...totally bomb-proof. You could use it as a rounders bat and still a few shots whilst waiting for the fielder to get the ball back.

Bob

I'm not very careful with my camera at all. I'm forever kocking it, droping and losing things. I don't really hold a lot of vaule to material items and if it breaks then it's a good excuse to upgrade :) These sort of consumer electronics aren't meant to last anyway. I'm, much more careful with old mechanical equipment :)

I take care of my kit, but I don't wrap it in cotton wool.

I don't abuse it but I do use it.....

It's a tool for work and gets treated as such. Rain, dust, sand etc don't worry me but I haven't dropped it (yet. hastily touches wood)

11500 shutter actuations since beginning of may should give you some idea of the usage it gets.

And evryone a keeper. Oh yes sir!

Gulp, if that was film I reckon it would've cost me about 3k in processing and film costs!

:agree:
I did up until I started covering motocross events & the 1st time I went it poured down & as I couldn't zoom properly with the rain cover on, I just took it off & trusted the sealing.

It's a tool... so yes it does get bashed, thrown around, and gets used in heavy rain. Why not though? It's pointless getting worried about little scratches, or a bit of water! These things really aren't that delicate you know! I have been in situations where the water is literally running off the camera, and it's been fine. I also never use the neckstrap on my camera, and often bash my camera into walls when i walk past (not on purpose though!)

Everyone knows a camera with battle damage is much cooler than a shiny one that only comes out of the bad when it's truly safe

I'm pretty careful of my gear - it costs too much to abuse it. Noticed that there's a lot of sap deposits on the kit though from being under the trees so it's due for a clean up

my 20D isn't made of eggshells - it gets treated as such, ie, I use it! If it takes the occasional knock / spot of rain, so be it.

Perhaps I'm a bit blasé now the price of a decent prosumer body has dropped and I have comprehensive insurance! :p

Try to look after mine as much as possible but not always easy.
My 5D has a nice chip in it after having it fall off the top of the car......and yes i did drive off with it on there.:shake:

TLC ... :suspect: ...

Well that is always the intention when I set out owning new stuff of any kind ... :D ... it is well looked after though but just occasionally gets treated in the way it might have been envisaged when those kind peeps at Nikon HQ decided to build in the external cushioning and damp proofing ... ;)

It is expensive ... ... therefore it does deserve to be looked after to last as long as I have it and then serve the next owner well too ... ... but it also deserves to be used properly and to its fullest ... :suspect: ... not necessarily something I do that well imgo ... :D

:p

I know just how you feel. I use mine, always give it a clean up after the event though.

I just do my best to keep it clean above anything else, as long as its all clean i dont care if it has any scuffs on it and such

On other forums I have seen so many comments of the "not taking it out in those conditions" type comments so it is a little interesting there are not more people like that on here.

Michael.

I think I take more care of my lenses than the body, as the lenses will more than likley go with you when you upgrade. Or if you need to sell them to raise cash for more expensive glass as your skills and needs increase / improve. I am a box hoarder, I keep all the boxes most things come in. My loft is full!!!!
I bought some camera armour last week for my 400D, this slightly improves the water / dust proof ability of the body and the camera bounces better when I am exploring with it on the end of my tripod slung over my shoulder and I catch door frames etc.

Cheerz:thumbs:
