Do you eat halal meat?

so I have not doubted its truth, but accept it is probably not the only truth.

I don't understand Terry.

But in an effort to get back on track I'm not sure why (what I suspect) is purely a business decision by various food producers is seen as a problem. Why do you think it is? It's a pizza, nothing more.

I have not been discussing a business decision on the other side of the world, and as far as I know, nor has anyone else.

we started off talking about eating Halal meat, which I very often do. But not as often as I did when I lived in Bradford.

If you speak and write Arabic you know full well that Vowels do not translate.

New Zealand lamb. One of the meats that causes major issues with this. Decisions made on the side of the world too.

This is the first time you've mentioned halal meat. I have to admit I can't tell the difference when I eat it

I'm not sure why you've pulled up the stuff about my Arabic based on a translation of two words either. I'm not sure quite where you get your ideas from?

I have in fact discussed this with a rabbi... However like all subjects you discuss with a Rabbi on religion or anything else, it is rarely more than an opinion.
The Rabbi is a Refom Jew, though his father is an Orthodox Rabbi, and would doubtless have a different view. What I said what what I was told,

so I have not doubted its truth, but accept it is probably not the only truth.

Well, I could help you out and remind you that it's a well-known fact that if you have two Jews in an argument you'll have three opinions! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

But as fabs agrees, I don't think your rabbi conveyed the right message at all. In my experience Jews, however religious or not, are always very accepting of other Jews in the same way that if you meet an English person abroad on holiday you have the immediate familiarity of some shared history.

Are you against kosher slaughter? I really hope you are.

No, and yes! I have no problem with either if that's what people of those groups want to do, but I don't follow religion (although do have a love of photographing old village churches but that's going off topic), and so have no wish to be part if it. Even going back 20 years I never bought a battery egg and while I don't agree with the method if that's what people want then that's up to them. Personally I would like to see everything be free range but in reality not sure if feasible.

If Waitrose said tomorrow that all their meat would now be kosher would you be as annoyed as you would be if they said it would be halal? You seem to be very angry about Muslims for some reason.

But I can't see the business logic in this? The majority of the population don't need to eat halal, and halal cannot be eaten by Jews or Sikhs. Surely a business like pizza express would cater for the mass market. Or do Muslims eat pizza and Jews/Sikhs don't? Would buying multiple chicken products (normal, halal and kosher) really add to the cost particularly)?

I get what waitrose say, that the bits of animal they don't use can be sold to other markets, makes business sense there.

Do I, where? Yes, if it was kosher I would be equally unhappy, or any other type of thing that was not comfortable with me.

Actually muslims (note the spelling) don't proselytise either - they will accept converts (which Judaism doesn't) but you have to come to the belief yourself.

Judaism does accept converts.

The reason right wing racist propaganda in the Uk tends to focus on muslims (and incidentally there are white and black muslims too) is nothing to do with skin colour , its due to them being an easy target due to the actions of their extremists.

Partly, but it probably has more to do with Muslims representing an easily, and often visibly, identifiable demographic.

That's 3 supply chains you're talking about. Keeping them separate all the way to table. That bound to add to your costs. That's why I think it's a pure business decision

You appear to have fallen into the trap of accepting street talk as having authenticity.
Moslem never has had the meaning you suggest.

Moslem, Muslim.

Anecdotal evidence perhaps, but where I grew up in North London, Moslem was definitely used as a slur, a derogatory word, in the same context as nigger, wog, coon or pig for the police.

Sorry but unless you've bought direct from someone with the chickens I doubt you'd ever know if you have or haven't. Even now the majority of eggs in this country are produced by caged birds, the only difference since 2011 is that the cages got larger, 'enriched' cages, which were about 30% larger than before. But this isn't EU consistant. Many ither countries like France, Span, Poland still use the old cages, which means cheaper eggs, and we all know how supermarkets love a low price and mis-labelling when profit is involved.

So - two threads running in OOF. One on a Tesco Pizza, one on Halal Meat, both supermarket issues. So, as Alexander would say - simples.

We're never going to get away from supermarkets for some boxed items, washing powders, certain cereals etc, but for the majority of fresh, quality produce there are other providers. Support your local shops, vote with your feet, its the only way these profit monsters will understand.

But a business decision would target the larger market. If there was strong evidence to say that normal meat would result in 100 customers, halal would be 105, and kosher 95 then it would make sense. But at the moment I just can't see the reasons why.

It's a recurring thing that I've noticed too over the months. Just be open and stand by your opinions.
Like I said earlier, there are people so narrow minded up that if someone disagrees they are automatically wrong, or that if they say there is too much immigration then they are a racist or bnp member. I can't help it if people are preoccupied with that.

I agree. Avoid tesco where possible for meat and seasonal produce. I have for years only bought burford brown eggs (can't remember the company) and only buy ones labeled free range, as I assume this means what it says.

A very quick table of religious affiliation for you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_the_United_Kingdom#Statistics

As there can be no real objection from those who claim Christianity as their religion aren't you making sure your product is acceptable to as many potential customers as possible, in the cheapest way possible? Which makes perfect business sense

I was being facetious because that's what this kind of thing deserves - it is clear that some people think that this is a creeping islamification of Europe and we will soon be being ruled under sharia law and assorted other stuff

however there is is a teeny flaw in their argument

that being that its utter and complete cobblers with no grounding in reality and based on racist propaganda rather than actual facts

The problem (and the thing I truly fear) is that history has shown us many time - if you say something often enough it becomes true.

That is not quite true... My maternal grand mother was Jewish none of her children including my mother, chose to follow that faith and were educated and brought up Christian.

Jewishness is far more than an accident of birth It is a religion with a strong social and ritual tradition. Many Jews have lapsed from their faith but are Jews and Jewish citizens. You have to live as a Jew to be accepted as a Jew.
The Nazis thought is was a matter of blood, and slaughtered thousands of Christians with Jewish grandparents.
The Jewish faith does not look for converts, but nevertheless does accept those prepared to to demonstrate their desire by study under a Rabbi, and by assimilation in to their society in obedience to the law.

Boom! Godwin's law. I forget what I win.

It perhaps depend when and where you were brought up. I spent a number of my formative years living in Watford, Hampstead, West Hampstead, Finchley, Belsize, and Muswell hill. And much of my early working and student life gravitated around Elephant and castle , Clerkenwell and Islington, the West end , Baker street and Soho. In those days there were very few Moslems and no Muslims at all in those places.
(Our Jewish friends will perhaps recognise those places rather better.) ( my grand mother, married 1904, was the daughter of a C. Golder of Finchley a not unusual name in those parts)

You don't win anything.

Godwins law IIRC negates anything that that poster says! :D

Godwins law is an on-line observational tool to stop subjects like Jewishness and the holocaust being discussed inappropriately.

The primary school i went to was predominantly Asian. I couldn't tell you what religion they were in all honesty, I was too busy playing with them as my friends. I was however sent to CofE Sunday school every sunday from an early age. But these are terms you grow up with in the area and the issues of race always in the local press etc with Bernie Grant and Harringay council. However, these derogatory terms used openly then are not acceptable now.

North London Jewish areas were predominantly Golders Green and Southgate when I lived there. Clerkenwell and Islington were working class areas

To be fair, the other thread isn't about tesco pizza, it's about someone wailing about a tesco pizza and then letting it fester in the fridge until he decides if it's mouldy enough yet to garner more "compensation".

I'm fairly confident that both Kosher and Halal food rules specifically prohibit storing a mouldy pizza alongside other food in the fridge!

Jonathan, even my rules prohibit that

Challenging an ignorant (dictionary definition) opinion is not narrow minded.

This was the bit I sort of remembered.

For example, there is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever debate was in progress.

But if you put a mouldy Pizza in the freezer, does the mould die, or just go into hibernation,
until warmed through at 180?
One of lifes mysteries, I guess.

In our house we treat the food in the fridge the same way we regard children ... it only gets interesting when it can walk by itself! :puke: :p
But then they start to talk and ruin it :(

Does that apply to a blue cheese pizza

I am going to have a toasted streaky, smoked bacon and tomato sarnie for tea.... neither kosher nor halal.
and not in the least evil.... followed by some crème caramel.

Don't know.... Don't really care. As long as it tastes good to me I really couldn't give a damn. I'm not into religion or any of its aspects either so I can't say I even know the difference or what the fuss is all about TBH.

Of course, although that tends to happen only after I've eaten the mushrooms. ;)

Oh I can just imagine you searching around the woods like a truffle hound searching out said mushrooms
