Do people today lack a sense of humour?

I thought the programme was far worse than is "joke" which I never picked up - they are always saying and doing stupid things and they just get worse and less relevant

don't see what all the fuss is about ..... if you think that it is in any way serious then it gives them credibility

he is only a TV personality

Personally I think that the general sense of humor is changing and at a very fast rate to ,very few kids these days even know what a newspaper is or even a news channel on t.v or computer /pad/phone so any political based jokes go right over there heads ,racist jokes and that's what they used to be just jokes are now frowned upon or can even get you locked up ,the likes of Jim Davidson and Bernard manning of Alf garnett just couldn't work in the new u.k .but we laughed our heads off at the innuendoes jokes back in the day .
These days it seems to be funny lots of swearing I.e Mrs browns boys style is funny .yes it is but I really miss the old sense of humor .i think you will find that a lot of the older generation who were subject to jokes on the basis of colour, creed or religion could very easily suss out if the teller was merely cracking or repeating a joke or if it was directed in a nasty way to cause upset .
I put a lot of the problems of today down to do gooders thinking they were doing the right thing without realising the long term effects of there actions having the opposite effect ,it's human nature to laugh in the face of adversity ,take that away and we just become boring zombies .

totally agree ........ you darn't open your mouth these days without being "jumped upon" no matter what you say

I used to love "It ain't half hot Mum" .. brilliant programme ....... but today the PC brigade just twist everything they see in the programme like that to suit their political agenda .......... I never saw it the way they (want) see it ......make me wonder sometimes who are the real racists and bigots ....... they would rather watch some programme full of f... ing and b .....g .. but that's OK with them as it's real life

Well that's great for you, but you weren't an Asian kid in the 70's constantly being picked on and called punka Waller. :$

But, y know, if it doesn't affect you it's probably not an issue.o_O

Personally I think it's refreshing to live in a world where paki and nigger aren't words I hear every day, and it'd be great if we could all grow up a bit and stop using the word 'gay' as an insult.

I make homemade Ice cream, but my wife eats it (I prefer Mr Whippy)

Should we be offended ???

Now if there were only some people who could get offended and kick up a fuss for us ;)

Have you ever been beaten up for being an ice cream maker? Made to live a life in shame?

If you have ill happily kick up a fuss.

If you haven't? Don't be such a f*****g cockwomble:)

Never used those words, or even saw gay as an insult .......... you want to try laughing at yourself sometime, as most were doing in "It aren't half hot Mum" - laughing at the British ..... you may then make some difference .. but I doubt it

Programmes like "It aren't half hot mum" and Alf Garnett did more to bring home racism etc., than you could ever dream of

I laugh at myself all the time, I know what you mean, I was there, I'm asking you to consider what it's like from the other point of view.

I don't see anything 'offensive' in a gollywog. But then I didn't have people kicking the s*** out of me whilst calling me that.

It's called empathy, not 'offended on behalf of'.

"golliwog" - the Black and White Mistrals show ........ they are only words as your other quotes are

life is life and history is history, you need understand both if you want to affect change ....... change evolves ........ evolution is far better than revolution ... it is a generational thing from both sides ....... being honest and dealing with things is the constructive way forward...... not condemning or dismissing what happened in the past

The nastiness of PC is as bad as what happened in the past ...... it is as dishonest as that ... engage and face the truth ... and from what you say you are as ineffective as those who you criticise were

And by the same token understanding that the world has changed and that your view is obsolete is also important if you don't want to be considered a bigoted c***womble.

edit: damn, was expecting the forum to edit my swearing for me :D

Absolutely it's evolutionary, and the cause of this thread is the dying embers of that old fashioned attitude to homosexuality.

Though having read some of the posts, it's more alive than it ought to be.

what is my view?

as far as this thread is concerned I do not believe Hammond mean't what he said in any way shape or form .... he just said it

what I do know is that the PC brigade it their caustic obnoxious way will jump and develop the comment placing their own meaning on it to cause as much damage as possible ........ totally counter productive

How the f*** does someone 'just say' something they neither think nor are happy to condone.

I do not know anyone who has "an old fashioned attitude to homosexuality" ........ the situation has change for the vast majority in the last 25 years ....... opinions vary but opinions have changed positively for the majority and do so every year . they have evolved and are evolving

you are looking for attitudes that are no longer common in the UK ...... other countries maybe but not the UK

you are a special person then

Hammond was talking to that idiot Clarkson ... you need to analyse what is said on TV more
Honesty isn't special, it's how I was brought up.

And I fully understand the context, none of it makes what he said acceptable.

Nail ....... head (y)

It's the INTENT (or lack of it) that's the most important part.

Yet INTENT lacks empathy and is a totally selfish point of view.

Try talking intent to someone who's family has been killed by someone driving with 'undue care', or worse, texting on their phone at the time of the accident. There was no intent to kill but that doesn't mean the driver haven't caused a whole lot of harm.

we have to disagree then ...... I do not believe at all he mean't what he said .......... he was trying to be funny ....... and even if I agreed with your views, which I don't, I can forgive him that ........ none of us are perfect ......... if you wish to judge the man, judge him fairly

Woooooaaah, we're discussing `banter`. (y)

The same holds true...

People normalising using 'gay' as an insult causes harm, intent or not. It makes no difference.

The fact that some old straight white blokes don't understand that wouldn't be a surprise to anyone under 30, it doesn't make it acceptable, but it is understandable :)

In the same way Trump was when bragging about sexually assaulting women?

Anyway, my view on this is judge the action not the person, the action was stupid, sexist and totally inappropriate; we don't have enough evidence on the person to draw a conclusion on their whole value system, unlike Clarkson who has a long track record.

If you want to make a difference Phil you need to consider the word "acceptable" ... both ways ..... there are many things that are acceptable to the under 30's but not at all acceptable to the over 60's and vice versa ........ but that does not make either side right or wrong

I cannot believe your narrow-mindedness

b******t.

The world has moved on, it's no longer acceptable to be casually homophobic. I happen to agree with that. So I'm narrow minded, what utter s***e!

I cannot believe that you have brought driving without due care and killing someone and Trump into a discussion about what Hammond said ... and somehow equating these

you are just mad

Phil as much as I admire your integrity ,I'm afraid you can't really understand the difference between racism and humor unless you have experienced it from the other side of the fence .as I said in my previous post it's not what's said but rather how it's said that causes harm ,and even within races and religions it's quiet prevalent take the sunnis and Shia for instance to us there all muslims ,but to themselves there deeply divided .
Or Catholics and protestants to muslims there all crusader christians to us just people we live among .one day if we meet up I'll explain it better ,hard to do with the written word

It's not the same at all.....unless you want it to be of course. ;) We're talking about a `sense of humour` (or lack of it) not physically attacking or killing someone.

As I said earlier in the thread, it seems to be a generational thing.

Just because I & the older generation weren't brought up in fear of the PC brigade, doesn't mean I don't have good manners & a sense of right & wrong. ;)

If I find something humorous I laugh, if I don't, I don't laugh. Simples. I refuse not to laugh because someone tells me not to.

I actually feel sorry for the young 'uns today & feel sad the way it's all going, but hey ho.

Just to add, I actually think being narrow minded & easily offended makes lots of things worse & many people now are actually even less tolerant.
What happened to `embrace & celebrate our differences`? ............ MY AR5E!!!!!

I do not believe at all he mean't what he said
Yeah, I'm sure he accidentally scripted it, read it at the read-through, said it with cameras rolling (maybe more than once), forgot to tell the producer to cut it in edit, and it totally slipped his mind to apologise.
Easily done.

Don't feel sad, young people have better comedy than we did.

I remember 'the comedians', an endless line of fat blokes telling each other's jokes, because their exposure was so small that they could get away with it. They were lazy fat old bastards who just had to say things that were slightly offensive for cheap laughs.

Modern comedians have to come up with a constant stream of new material, forcing them to be genuinely creative. All the young people I know regularly go to see comedians, buy comedy DVD's etc. and the people they're seeing are genuinely funny, not just try to be offensive.

I was talking to a relative recently, saying it was absolutely brilliant that our children are growing up with no concept of 'difference' of race, sexuality, disability etc.

The only thing they need your pity for is that they'll not grow rich just from owning property, they won't get an unaffordable pension, and they'll have to deal with the disassembly of education and the NHS. Because the baby boomers emptied the till.

so now you are saying that Hammond, the producer, the script writer and presumably the Amazon lawyers approved it?

The plot thickens

Oh dear, my kids will do OK when I "pass" they will get the house(s), the car(s), the money, etc., etc., less 30% tax to HMRC ....... all for doing sweet FA ..... just like I didn't

I don't pity them at all

but they seem to be doing quite well on their own .. working hard

It's great for them that you have to die, rather than having the same opportunities you had. I'm sure they're thrilled.

I have never been told "that they'll not grow rich just from owning property, they won't get an unaffordable pension, and they'll have to deal with the disassembly of education and the NHS. Because the baby boomers emptied the till"

I thought that the last Labour government "emptied the till" ......... but you cannot believe that what people say they really mean

my kids have had far better opportunities than me ....... and at an earlier age ................

and they seem to be doing quite well on their own working hard ........ in fact they keep telling me to spend it ....... on my stupid camera equipment, holidays and bird watching trips

I used to love the comedians, but agree they wouldn't go down so well these days. (`lazy fat old bastards`? :jawdrop: tut tut Phil ;) )
My G/parents took me to watch the B&W minstrel show, but they didn't enjoy it because it was racist.
I enjoyed a Jim Davidson show in B/pool.
I also enjoyed a night out @ Bernard Mannings club.

I used to ask people in pubs not to swear when there were woman present, but apparently that is now acceptable. Just words the same as name-calling?

Not being funny, but we are ALL different & realising that is actually a positive. We need to embrace & celebrate our differences, not deny they exist ffs.

Baby boomers emptying the till...... oh please, not again

Seriously Phil ... I was born in S Yorks in 1946 ................ are you saying that the opportunities etc., today are worse than when I was a "kid"

I worked hard to give them better opportunities than I had ..... my parents did the same for me and I hope my kids will do the same for their kids ........... but today I don't see this happening in more and more young families as selfishness has really taken over in some parts of the UK

I must be completely "out of touch" .. as I see marvellous opportunities for young people in the UK today

I really find you confusing, sometimes
