Yes
I know the rules regarding DSR with new stuff as I've sent a few things back to Amazon over the past few years.

However do these regulations apply to used equipment as I was looking at the MPB web site & can't find any reference to DSR for new let alone used?

Not sure about DSR, but I had to pay return postage when I sent back a faulty item (tripod with sand in the leg locks and no spanner to tighten the mount plate)

My only dealing with them and not too chuffed, also read they won't accept lenses back as faulty if buyer not satisfied with sharpness as its considered subjective.

Don't see that last point matters if the buyer ends up paying return postage whatever

Thanks for the fast replies. I know I've read somewhere a few months ago that used was covered in the same way as new so I'll have to start Googling :gag:

What's your specific problem John?

That's a bit off, did they refund you the postage?

I've used MPB a fair bit in the past, but less so now. The last time I called them and spent a while on the phone selecting a late serial number 5D to purchase, when it arrived it was the wrong one (an early one with half of someone's eyebrow in the VF). They arranged for collection on my request and gave a full refund so can't ask more than that. I do feel sometimes their descriptions aren't particularly accurate, though.

I sent a used lens back to Harrison cameras once - they offer a '14 Days Money Back Guarantee' (in addition to a 12 month warranty) but don't really say what this means/ covers. They did refund me with no questions asked but pointed out that they found no fault with the lens - which there wasn't optically but I felt that it was a lot more scruffy cosmetically than their description of it had suggested and that would affect the value should I wish to sell it later. I would buy from them again with no problem (and have bought from them before where the lens was exactly as described and have been very happy with it). I know a few places do say something like return for a full refund within 7 days if not happy (I think LCE and Ffordes say this, from memory?) which effectively gives you dsr rights of return, but not sure about MPB.

Anyway it seems DSR regulation do apply to used items bought from a business (except auctions) - according to ebay:

Distance Selling Regulations
The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000 generally apply to sales to consumers made by sellers acting in the course of a business, which have been made at a distance. In other words, where there's no face-to-face contact between the seller and the consumer before the contract is made. The Distance Selling Regulations apply to items purchased via Buy It Now listings and Second Chance Offers on eBay.co.uk. However, they don't apply to auction format listings on eBay.co.uk.

The Regulations also provide a period of seven working days after the date of receipt within which the consumer can cancel the contract (often referred to as the "cooling off" period) and get their money back, including the original postage and packing charges. The consumer can be asked to return the goods at their own expense, but only if the seller informed them of this requirement before the contract was made (otherwise, the seller is responsible for collecting the goods). If a business seller has not provided the information required under the Distance Selling Regulations (as discussed above), the buyer will have up to 3 months to cancel the contract and get their money back.

The cancellation rights do not apply to certain items including software, audio or video recordings that have been unsealed, perishable goods such as food or flowers, or items that have been made to order.

Specifically mentioned on the CAB site.

What do the distance selling regulations cover?
Distance selling is selling and buying goods or services without face to face contact. For example shopping by internet, mail order, phone or television.

The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations give you legal rights when you buy goods from a trader who normally sells goods or services at a distance.

The regulations apply to the sale of goods or services to consumers but not to businesses.

It doesn't matter how you pay for the goods and the regulations apply to both new and second-hand goods.

This page explains what extra legal rights the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations give you when you buy goods or services at a distance.

In a word NO and wouldn't buy from them again

Same thing happened when I sent a faulty new camera back to another retailer a couple of weeks ago, I also paid for the initial delivery too

Not given up on that one yet and have decided to make efforts to obtain a refund

A really big thanks to you all for offering help -- Pat, Rich, Bob, Joe, Mark & Dave

thanks to Dave & Mark for the links & it was indeed the CAB site I must have read it on.

I took delivery of a lens from MPB yesterday, as well as a camera body from Amazon, & am now in a panic mode feeling somewhat stressed about my decision to have bought either. Not for any other reasons than those unique to me concerning my mobility (wheelchair user) & general health issues that affect my strength (ability to use the camera with my hand & arm limitations) & even memory as regards remembering how to use a DSLR. I used to own a SLR with a number of lenses & the usual other bits but find learning to use anything new a real struggle.

So I need to give myself a talking to over this weekend to see if I have been wise or silly :gag:

Talked to myself & as I type feel I was panicking a bit prematurely but this time tomorrow hope I'll still feel calm that my purchase was sensible :)

Buyers remorse, it's common, take a deep breath and forget about the money, it'll pass :D

My 'buyers remorse' didn't last long  , a day or two at the most, & I'm now very happy with my purchase - especially as the lens is as good as new

I'd go ahead and demand it if I were you
