Yes
I am not in any way an expert photographer in fact the opposite, so that's my starting point.
When I retired I purchased a Canon 500D DSLR Kit which soon failed to satisfy me.
I then purchased a used Canon 600D and a EF 70-300mm I: 4.5 - 5.6 IS USM Diffractive Optics.
I have been delighted with both of them and used them for mainly taking wildlife photo's particularly birds photographs.
The photos are for my pleasure only and some times just to confirm the species.

I recently had a gift of money and after much thought purchased the latest Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II USM zoom lens.
I have used it for a week now and am amazed at how much better it is than the previous 70-300 lens (To be expected I think).

My question is should I part exchange both my cameras for another higher specification camera and will it make a difference.
If the answer is yes exchange them, then what would you recommend as the one to go for.
Money is an issue so any spending would have to be warranted.

I don't do wildlife stuff, but at a guess I'd say you'd see a lot of benefit from a 7Dmk2 - around £1150 new. If that's a bit steep then perhaps a 70D - around £670 new. There is the 80D on the imminent horizon though, so the 70D price might come down shortly.

Probably not.
Do you think you are being held back with the 600? It's not that old.

I'm still using my Nikon D200 of 2005 vintage :) {10MP}
Admittedly, I have some newer cameras, but there again I'm using some from 30+ years ago as well.

It's more about the lenses with photography.
Camera bodies are normally good for about 10 years before it is worth changing, unless you are a pro or have loads of money.

Forgot to mention - If you're looking at part exchange, somewhere like MPB might do you a good deal.

Hi Brian, I asked the same question a couple of years back and nearly every one said to invest in better glass. I did buy a better lens which did inprove image quality that was using a canon 40d and a sigma 100-300 f4. how ever i have moved over to nikon now and started with d7000 with a sigma 70-200 f2.8. but have recently bought the d750 f/frame body as my son is getting into photography and as ended up with my d7000. I don't think theres a lot of change from the d7000 to the d750 i'm still using the sigma 70-200 but looking into a new lens to go on the d750 as i like to shoot motorsport and could do with a bit more reach. I think you have made a good choice with your new lens. hope this helps I'm only someone that takes photos for my own pleasure.

Well thanks for your input folks. Much appreciated.
I think given the cost of moving to a substantially higher level Canon camera,
I have checked out some images and feel it would be a very costly exercise and for not a worthwhile gain.
So I will stick with this camera for the foreseeable future and see how the lens performs.

The general rule of thumb is that you should change when the kit is limiting you in a way you can identify. If the images you take don't have gear-related flaws then the kit you have is probably still fine.
