dlh's 52 for 2010 - Week 16 Stare

When street was pulled this week I immediately thought this was the excuse I needed to get out there and hit the pavements and get some people pictures. Been wanting to do it forever but never had the guts. And it would seem I am still too chicken and find it too easy to find excuses not to go and face the big bad world outside.

So one of my ideas then was grab the left over quality street and do something with that. But whilst flicking through the week 3's and other chatter I've noticed this seems to be on other people's minds too. So out the door went that idea. That left me with nothing.

And so, before we reach the week's end and I fall behind or pull out the joker, here is a another poor effort to fill the gap where my inspiration should be.

I call it (Street?) Racing...

What have I learnt this week? That I have no idea what I'm doing.

Darren, I for one like your take on street. I think it fits the theme too. I like the movement in your image. Having read your 40 thread, I also think you are too hard on yourself and your photography. You do have the 'eye' for an image. :)

Excellent, maybe a little yellowy but I love it - you can bet nobody else does the same at the very least. It's a well-taken shot that is bang on focus where it needs to be... nice.

Arthur

Its a good shot. Dont be so hard on yourself.

As for taking pictures of strangers. I have only just plucked up the courage. I think if you take pictures of people who are putting on a display- entertainers etc- they expect to get photographed so are good ones to start with.

i really like it , its something totally different , but within the theme , great job

love the little reflection in the track :D

"it doesnt matter if you win by an inch or a mile......"

great shot, and a very good take on the theme, good colour, great DOF, well done

Anymore The fast and the furious quotes :D

Great take on the theme and well done!

That is fun! I'm not quite sure about the colours but the arrangement is good and I like the motion blur.

Well I go away for a few hours to try and forget and come back to this. I'm a little gobsmacked anyone likes it

Thank you Iain. Last ditch efforts seem to be doing the trick for me. Much prefer my ideas to come much earlier in the week though.

Thanks Arthur. not looked at anyone else's yet so guess it's time to see what I didn't come up with.

Thanks Sue. Not too many entertainers around these parts. Feel more comfortable in surrounding where people expect you to have a camera. Definitely stick out like a sore thumb in the high street. Other reasons too for being a little agoraphobic which I'm planning to work on.

like the shot Darren and i love the lesson you've learnt:lol:

Cheers Chris. Forty years and it's only just come to me :D

Thank you Richard. All thanks to my nice new light tent which got its first outing today.

Thanks Steven. The focus and DoF was the one thing I was happy with.

Very creative twist on the theme, good work.

Thank you Steve. My creative side has been buried by my logical side all my life, it would be so much more fun the other way round.

Anymore The fast and the furious quotes :D

Great take on the theme and well done!

Thanks Scott. Three of my favourite films (Tokyo Drift doesn't count). Hadn't even thought about that or I could have put a Vin Diesel egg in the background somewhere.

That is fun! I'm not quite sure about the colours but the arrangement is good and I like the motion blur.

Thanks Tracer. I wasn't sure if the blur worked as it was a little hurried, but if it works for you then it works for me. I should have paid a little more attention to the PP and gone for the Top Gear look really.

Definately not crowbarred and only a hint of a shoehorn, I think its a lovely shot, totally different to anything else and well taken :D

Thank you Yvonne. The crowbar is warmed up and ready for whatever might come next.

Well I've finally found your thread Darren  so I'm going to try a majot catch up

Curved, Like jgs001 I thought wow when I saw that so enough said :clap:

Poem, I guess it was too cold for someone to help you out by posing in the sea , so Action Man called called into use. It's a good interpretaion of the poem, and for a grim poem it's an amusing image ;)

Chopped made me laugh, and given the lack of equipment you did well

Street, interesting take on the theme but doesn't really say street to me you big jessie :D

I'm sure you would have learned even more if you had just gone outside and done it. You can stay forever in your comfort zone or you can get out there and grab the challenge. I felt like you at the beginning of last year but I'm glad I got out of my home environment and started taking pictures in the real world. It did wonders for my confidence with the camera.

Sorry if Isound a bit preachy :(

Nice shot dlh :D hehe, the motion blur is very good.

After I came back yesterday with no luck on the 'street', I thought about setting up a nice little lego street scene but then realised I didn't have any in the flat!

I actually think it's a cracking image.
I like the colours, there's loads of movement in the frame, it really works.

Preach away Jill. I need kicks up the backside like this and maybe one day I'll have the confidence to try it. Not just yet though :)

Really like that....love the contrasty look and the colours are lovely! Great stuff!!

Many thanks. I rushed it through so quickly I didn't even notice one of the cars had gone a bit pink.

Nice shot dlh :D hehe, the motion blur is very good.

Thanks. The motion blur was a cheat, but it's done the job :)

SO many I still missed, wowsa, I thought I had seen them all.

Your shots are great and original. Some nice thinking outside the box, I like it ;)

Thanks Dade. I'd like to be thinking of taking more traditional photos rather than setups like these. I will try harder, although maybe not for week 5.

That's a good, fun image - really like what you've done with the motion blur

Thanks Nick.

Thanks Rob.

For week 5 is there any chance I can just point everyone back at week4? :)

I like week 4, Darren, even if you did bottle out of Street in the big wide world. I wasn't any better, sneaking ut in the dead of night!!!

Thought for Week 5 (having read Jill's comments!) what about shooting an outdoor Street and swapping the two round? :)

Jean

Now you've given me something else to ponder thanks Jean...

Might keep my brain warm whilst I go scrape the ice off the car.

Street - I like it. I almost did the same, good excuse to dust down the old Scalextric set. Love the blur, colours are maybe a little off but a great idea well taken.

different interpretation of the theme, like it though.. great blur.. would be perfect for this weeks theme too! ;)

Nice one Darren! Brum....brum! Great blurring effect. It would be nice to have the colours popping out a little more, even so I love it.

Cheers, Rob

Here's a re-process with a little more colour. And no it's not my entry for week 5 :D

It's a reprocess of my week 4 for street Mick. Back on the last page somewhere :)

I really like it Darren, you're getting chuckles out of me week on week here :D... Not sure it says street really... although I do like the PP you've done to it (it is PP'ed motion blur isn't it ?)

Yep the motion blur is PP'ed in. Glad they're getting a reaction. Be happier when I can take a decent "traditional" photo and get the same :)

Very clever, well executed and good fun. It's just a really pleasing image
I prefer the second shot with the colour boost, but both work well and that's a very competent use of PP for the motion blur.

Absolutely nothing wrong with staged, indoor shots and nothing wrong with some enhancement in PP either. But . . . if you want to get outdoors and try something different, take a deep breath, count to 10 and get out there. I tend to prefer indoor set ups too, but that's more of a control thing for me.
Give it a go - I promise it won't be as bad as you think.

Another effort to be bitterly disappointed with.

Whilst it was suggested last week that I make week 4 my speed and reshoot street, I felt that I needed to shoot in the week the theme was pulled to try and test myself or I could be swapping images around all year.

Shot from inside moving car or light trails - too likely to be used elsewhere so discounted. That left me with no idea at all :) Then I had a bright idea later in the week, but not having a large room or plain wall (I must get a green screen I think ;)) that fell through. Then another idea which no matter how i tried I couldn't pull off.

And so it's sunday morning and whilst not being able to get the take on the theme I have out of my head, I've had to settle for this or be left with nothing.

Shoehorn time...

Speed, when you want something to happen quickly, inevitably it's like watching paint dry.

Sorry. A week to forget for me (again). Time to go visit everyone's efforts.

Shoehorn regretfully excepted :D. A block of colour painted on the background may of helped your idea a little, week 6 today hopefully it's not decorating.

I'd thought about adding the background but it completely slipped my mind when I woke up this morning and did this. Too annoyed with myself to reshoot now, need to calm down and be inspired elsewhere.

At least I managed one good shot this week.

i think thats a brilliant take on speed (or the distict lack of it) alot better than my idea!

It's a good interpretation of the theme, but as already mentioned, a patch of paint on the background would have given the image a boost.

Great effort though.

I wondered where that story was going and what it had to do with speed . . . but it got there and I get it!

I had a week exactly like this for chopped. Had an idea in my head that didn't work out, but just couldn't get it of my head. Panicked on Sunday and ended up with the first thing I could grab. At least you ended up with something fairly decent.

I like the choice of colour for the paint. Very vibrant against the white.
I can't help agreeing with the others though that a painted background might have worked better, but still not a bad effort.

I hate weeks when nothing goes right - so you have my sympathies. :) What you've come up with is a clever take (and a bit of crowbarring is inevitble) on the theme. I think the shot is fine as it is - because if we're talking about paint - have you ever noticed that it dries into unmanageable lumps on the paintbrush long before it dries on the wall. So there's another element of Speed in your shot!

Jean

've had to settle for this

We'll look forward to next week's then. :D

Edit: Oh... your little racing cars shot is great and I prefer the second version with more colour.

Echo Yv above. Really cool spin on street and speed!

You have captured the explosive energy right at the start of a drag- looks especially difficult. Be proud dude - you have nailed this shot
