2nd reflection -lovely rich colours and great lines!

And the wisdom shot! Fantastic! That wouldn't look out of place on a Santorini calandar!

What a fantastic capture and spot on for the theme. As you said, you chose it for it's name, but what it represents to many people is the wisdom of it's teachings. I really, really like it :clap::clap::clap:
 
I agree with all the people who beat me to it. :)

I also thought about a church, but more in the context of trying to find a suitable inscription on a gravestone. But this is terrific. The church and the name were just made for this week's theme. :)

I'm slowly recovering from the shock of another colout shot from you, but tbh, it was the right decision for this one, despite giving us all a heart attack. :lol:

Oh - and the colours are fabulous. :clap::clap:

Thanks, Marcus! Believe it or not, I have done colour stuff before we started this 52 business, I'm just in a much happier place when it's black and white!!

Thank you Jean. I have to be honest that as soon as I saw the place I knew it was going to have to be colour. Perhaps that was why I was feeling guilty about this week - I hadn't got a black and white shot that was better than a colour one...

I've had two ideas for this week, one slightly out of the box, both should work in mono and it's only thursday. I'd better go and lie on the sofa with a large glass of wine... You watch them both go to you know what now!!!
 
are we allowed to put two images up?? I've gone with the first idea I had and have 2 shots that I've selected from it. The trouble is, I can't decide which one to go for!! I have a definite favourite, but the long haired general thinks I should go with the other... Could I put both and then I'll keep the one people favour and remove the other?
 
Love the colour and vibrancy in the Wisdom shot. The composition is spot on too :thumbs:

As for posting 2 images, you can if you want to. The "rules" I put in the Join Us thread are only there to say how I would be approaching it and I don't think there was anything in there about only posting 1 image.

Personally I would always select one image as my Photo52 image of the week and if I had other(s) I wanted to show I link to them. However, if you want to post both go ahead (we'll just think you are showing off :lol:)
 
52.11 - Relationships. I wanted to think a little out of the box this week and the idea I liked the most was showing how relationships seem to have changed in the modern techno era. Social interaction seems to have changed so much since I grew up with the arrival of msn, facebook, myspace, etc, etc. We always joke with our eldest that she's obsessed with the cyber relationships and what would she do if she ever had to physically interact with a real live person. Joking aside, it does worry me a little but at least she gets to talk to her british friends everyday whilst we are posted on the other side of the globe. I was very undecided on which shot to use and I'm not going down the 2 posts line after all (thanks Simon). I actually preferred a different shot (http://www.flickr.com/photos/21712624@N08/3372638901/sizes/o/in/photostream/) as for me it was a nicer shot and made the imagination work a little more wondering who she was talking to, etc. However, most people seemed to prefer the one I've plumped for so who am I to argue... So here we have 52.11 Relationships - my best friend.

Great interpretation of the theme - I'm also intrigued to see it in colour though.

I manage a team at work and they are largely younger than me - I'm 29, they are 18 - 25. It completely amazes me that they will sit about four feet away from each other and send a text or email rather than speak. I love my message boards as much as the next person but I do wonder if young peoples social skills are going to become so stunted by msn and whatnot that eventually they just won't know how to communicate in real life :shrug:

I like this shot better than the other because it shows the screen and illustrates the relationship as a two-way communication - important even in cyberspace. :)

I worry too about youngsters who only communicate electronically, but for children like yours who are separated from friends for whatever reason e-communication is brilliant and keeps them in touch.

Works well, makes you think, there are probably many relationships online where the two people will never meet.

Fits the theme well and in a very different way, well done.
 
Not sure why but this don't work so well as your other shots from your 52s...

I think it's the funny angle...the shoulder and arm take away my attention too much.

But it works well in B&W and yes we all have relationships with our computers these days...:lol:

Cheers, Marcus. I do feel like I've let myself down a little this week. I'm pleased with the idea and what it was portraying, I just don't think I put enough into getting a shot i really liked. Not helped by our laptop dying on us and taking up lots of my time but that's no excuse. I'm off to write 100 lines, 'Must try harder and don't settle for an image you're not really happy with...':shake:
 
52.12 Poverty. Well there's been quite a lot in the local news about the homeless 'problem' in town this week and it's clearly something that stirs up a lot of emotion as nobody wants to see society's failings on their doorstep. I took a walk down to the homeless corridor (only 10 min walk from the top of vegas strip) and found these guys in an area where a lot of homeless people were setting up. I sat chatting to them for over 30minutes and could have stayed much longer; one of them wanted to have a beer with me! The older guy (64) has a Masters in English Literature and had some very poignant words to say. The thing that stuck in my head was, "...society as a whole seems to have the conception that we're all con-men, thieves and ne'er-do-wells. What they need to think is, there but for the grace of God goes I...". So here we have 52.12 Poverty - Trying to survive.

Thanks jean. Feeling much better about myself because of the way I prepared for this one and the experiences that led to. Capturing images was the easy part today (even if I did take my big 17-40 comfort blanket off for the shoot!), I've a few more that I'm pleased with that are on my flickr. I'll post them in a separate thread when I can get on a pc!

I've had a look at your Flickr and, apart from the one posted here, I like the general street scene best. It really shows a side of life we don't always associate with Vegas, although I can remember feeling that even the Strip looked very shabby in daylight.

That's a great shot, and you're a braver man than I. Interesting story behind it, and society probably really does need to stop and think sometimes about what's going on around us.

Thanks, Marcus, and thanks for the kick in the you know what about last weeks shot!

After spending the time to talk to these guys it really did hit home about the hardships they have to endure and the situation they are in. I've still not had a chance to get on a PC to post up the other shots. The area where all the streets are lined with tents is a NO GO area for tourists and the police recommend avoiding it, especially in dark hours. I have to say that I'm very glad that I decided to just drive through that part and just jumped out for a quick shot. There were a lot of intimidating people and some acting in a threatening manner as soon as I got out of the car (having a meal ticket hanging round my neck didn't help!). The one grab shot I got had two guys trying to avoid the lens, one covering his face and the other turning his back. It wasn't until I processed the image that I realised he was waving at me as I took it. Just a little confused as to why he didn't use his whole hand to do it... :eek:

Good stuff this week, you found the real thing, lots of interest in the pic, from the clash in the way the guys are dressed to the overturned shopping trolley in the background.

I admire your courage in taking the time to meet these guys and come away with a worthy image.

DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!!!!! I was just about to leave the house at 6.30am to have the long drive out in to the desert this morning when I had a call from Ops saying we had a change in timings for the day and that my shift would be starting 3 hours later - for those that don't know I work out in the Nevada desert on the MQ-9 Reaper Sqn. Not to worry I thought, take the long haired general out for a nice breakfast at a local restaurant and saunter up later in the morning. About 15 miles from work alarm bells started ringing when I could see some tell-tale smoke trails in the sky above Creech AFB, the Thunderbirds (USAF version of Red Arrows) were there practicing. They occasionally come out here to practice their displays at very low level right above our buildings and I've had the camera in the car for a while to try and capture them for ages; I was especially anxious/hopeful that they might make an appearance this week as it would have made a great shot for this weeks theme.

The excitement was rising as I got closer and closer as I could see them going through some really spectacular stuff. That was until I was about half a mile from the gates when they all regrouped and headed on back towards Nellis. I shant relay what I was shouting at them inside the car, but it would have made a Navvie blush!! If the bloomin mission hadn't been altered I'd have been there to capture what was apparently a full hour of overhead trickery at around 100 ft above the base. Back to the drawing board... :bang:
