Yes
Why is it when you go into a very well known DIY store to buy something and you see it on display but cannot find it on the shelf for taking away you then ask the assistant for help. He turns round and tells you "Oh sorry sir, that item is now discontinued". I said no matter the one on display will suit me fine and I'm prepared to pay the advertised price 70 odd quid. Then he tells you "sorry we can't sell it to you as it is a display item only" . A supervisor arrives on the scene and I explain the situation only to get told the same guff from him, he goes as far as saying the kitchen sink on display does not belong to us but the manufacturer gives us one for display purposes only. I asked what happens to these "Discontinued items" Supervisor says they go back to manufacturer and the probably end up in the crusher. They would rather crush the damn thing instead of selling it.....absolutely bonkers.

Jeez why don't they remove them when the stock runs out.

B&POO by any chance .............. ?

We bought a home BBQ kit that was ex-display from Homebase. They knocked 10% off the price and it was already on sale.

I've been other stores eg sofa store where they'd happily sell me a display model reduced instead of faffing about with sending it back to be replaced by a sofa display model from another line.

B & Q here are useless. They never have anything you need. "You'll only find those in our bigger stores". Always got plenty of BBQs and patio furniture, but never anything for DIY.

A lot of the time they're not allowed to remove display items, particularly in the kitchen/bathroom departments until told to do so by head office. Even then, a lot of the display items are incomplete, and get removed as part of a refit.
It's not the staffs fault though.

I was hoping this thread was going to be about a couple who had been banned from a DIY store for inappropriate behaviour behind the timber display!

I had a different story last week at a large independent garden centre.
We were decorating and saw a console table on sale, decided to go for it a few days later.
So off i went, a good 40 miles to find the home furnishings area closed off for Christmas decor fit up, however, just asked and yep, not a problem, they would take off the display that was on it and shortly thereafter it was in the car.
Well done Cardwells staff near Gourock.

A lot of this is true I have a mate who works for a kitchen manufacturer and his job is to go round each B&Q store to replace all the stuff that gets nicked of the display items, (at the kitchen company's expense) It's also correct that the end of line stuff goes in the skip.

Unless it's still 1/2 decent, in which case it sees the skip on its way to an employee's car...

When our local town had a new shopping estate built many years ago, 'Texas", now Homebase, had a couple of skips out back that were filled with perfectly usable products.
Binned because of e.g one bulb in a pack of two broken, packaging bust etc.. who could blame folk for raiding the skips...

Will it make you feel better if I was to say the B & Q store at Folkestone will be closing down next year? I feel sorry for the staff losing their jobs but it doesn't come as a surprise as there are four other DIY stores (Wickes being the most recent addition) all within 5 minutes walking distance from each other. Shows a lack of original thinking when it comes to out-of-town shopping estates planning, especially as we don't have a Toy R Us or an IKEA store in this town.
