Calumet sell spare inserts for their rolling case for £31 (http://www.calumetphoto.co.uk/item/RM2201/). These fit nicely in Members soft rolling cabin cases (which look like: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Members-Taraw...115604&cguid=44a003ef12b0a47a2ed51ea5ff67ebfa). I got my cabin case for £20 at the local market meaning I have a well-padded rolling case for my camera gear that looks nothing like a camera case and is small enough to be taken on aircraft (including Ryanair) although probably not within weight limits, should they weigh it, all for about £50. The Calumet official version (which is very nice I should say) costs £150, and Think Tanks etc go for much more.

I manage to fit this lot inside :
1D mark III
5D mark II
300/2.8
70-200/2.8
24-70/2.8
50/1.4
85/1.2

The 1D is a squeeze as the calumet case isn't really quite deep enough but it can be done.

Here is a pic with the gear in a different configuration

The front of the Member's bag has a decent pocket big enough for a small laptop and a small pocket fine for filters and batteries. The Calumet case has a front flap with two large pockets I use for cards and gels.

You're very welcome to try it David - if come up to London you can always give it a go.

I'd love a Peli, but no way I'd get it on a Ryanair flight.

Thats the problem, like David, I love the peli storm case, especially when you need a spare seat, but it would be useless as a flight bag! :bonk:

tricksy, the 1510 is hand luggage on most airlines I think?

probably going to get a think tank roller for that though long term as I keep hearing v good things

but it weighs almost all of the 10kg allowance that you get on ryanair. Easyjet have no weight limit mind. Don't really need the durability of a peli if you're using it as carryon either, and there's varying schools of thought as to whether soft or hard case is better if you do have to check it - the soft will eat a lot of the impact if needed.

And yeah, the thinktank airport international is -perfect-

Just weighed the DIY bag and gear as in the above photo and my dodgy bathroom scales put it at 13ish kilos. So probably only £300 or so in excess charges on Ryanair if they do catch me.

you could always wear a camera and 24-70 with flash around your neck if you are worried about weight. then when you go through check-in pop it all back in the case, done it loads of times

I really like the look of the kata bags that mcnally blogged recently for the hard soft thing David

wonder if they'd object to 2 bodies 2 flashguns 24-70 and 70-200 on my shoulders :p

lowepro did do an ugly bag that was designed to fit inside a peli 1510 iirc.

I'm a ttp fanboy for life now I'm afraid ;)

Nice idea, I have been considering a roller case for my kit. I'm sure that the 300mm f/2.8 is a huge lump what have you hidden it under int he above pic?

I've tried different layouts and forgot to take a shot with the 300 inside. But it essentially filled the gap where the 5D+24-70 is now (with the funny padded corner out as well. It fills the full width of the bag and is indeed a bit of a lump. But its a lovely lump...

The bag isn't quite deep enough for the 1D and it puts some unwanted strain on the zip in the bag so I've now turned it round so the 1D is in the middle of the bag with the lens pointing up, so the hump is away from the zip.
