Digital Medium Format Thread

I recently had the pleasure to view a most beautiful hand crafted photographic book by photographer Ian Lawson whilst visiting Tarbert Distillery in the Outer Hebrides, I believe he shoots a Hasselblad H6D (?), his personal documented book of images taken in the Outer Hebrides (Lewis/Harris), this utterly quality bonded book is called ‘Saorsa’.

I’ve never ever seen photo images like it colours wise - simply exquisite !! I will be purchasing a copy in the near future…

Just wondering if anyone here knows Ian Lawson’s photographic work/background etc…….just curious.
Most beautiful captures/compositions and unbelievable colours.

Cheers;
Peter

Two significant TVRs

A 1980 TVR Taimar Turbo SE, one of three originals made, this car has had the same owner for the last 40 years and is un-restored (effectively as it left the factory)

And a 1963 TVR Grantura, fitted with a 1622 MGA Engine, this car raced at the Sebring 12 hour in 1963, and yesterday was its first UK appearance since it left for America in 1963. Now owned by a Belgian, it has been restored and competed last year in the Spa 6 hours.

Great processing.

A request... Anyone can post photos of people at 2048px on the longest side?
Here's an example used for a poster campaign

Take one Ford 3.0 V6 Essex Engine from the Granada/Capri, add turbocharger installation from Ralph Broad "Broadspeed), and create a 1975 TVR sportscar that in mid range acceleration would leave a Porsche Turbo (1975 vintage) standing. Drawbacks, 5 star fuel (single figure MPG when on full boost) and a fair bit of Turbo lag, exciting cars to drive (I've had the fortune to drive a couple - including on a trackday) - produces approx 230bhp (up from 138!) with lower compression pistons and a pressureised carburetor (no fuel injection here!!)

Well so far I have managed to fight off my urge to buy a GFX. So much so that I believe I missed a good deal on a GFX 50S from Park cameras. As stated before it is definitely a want not a need. I know that the quality will be better than my micro four thirds (OM1) but I would like to see if it is noticeably better for amateur use when I rarely do large prints. Fuji offer a free 2 day loan of cameras and I have booked a GFX50s ii with the 35 - 70 lens for next weekend. If, as I suspect the temptation is too much the refurb store have the body and lens in stock for £3.5K. It is just a shame that they don't lend the 50S with lens and tiltable viewfinder but I am grateful for the opportunity to see the quality before spending what will undoubtably be a fairly large sum of money when additional lenses are factored in.
Thank you to everyone who has offered advice so far.

Just remember that you look at an Olympus image but you look into a GFX image!!!

Enjoy the loan and post some shots up!

The kit was £3499 new at the photography show so I’d ring around dealers and haggle, they have far more margin than they lead people to believe, Fuji always have some kind of deal running, when the current lens offer stops the body deals will probably start again.

Have put my order in for the X2D and 38V lens, I saw that Scan had the lens in stock and says the camera is due on the 30th September - and as being as they aren't your typical go to for photography gear I'm going to take the gamble on getting it sooner than Wex or Park Cameras.

I'll probably look at getting the 90V next year

I am due to have a 2 day trial of the GFX 50sii starting tomorrow. Has anyone else tried kit from Fuji. Do they contact you afterwards and make an offer you can't refuse?

I did a free trial of the XH2s recently (which got extended to nearly a week thanks to Royal Mail strikes) which worked really well. No offers afterwards though (so far).

Interested to see how you get on with this, its on my radar!
I had it out for 1/2 an hour whilst waiting for Mrs T to get some groceries. There is vignetting at 20mm with the filter holder on but it goes away at 22mm then with the Lee Polariser on the front of the filter holder theres vignetting out to 24mm. The lens is light and a joy to use and will focus down to about 17cm (lens front element to subject measured with a ruler (very scientific)). My initial snapshots around the supermarket car park were sharp corner to corner and the files are nice and crisp. Overall it is, so far, everything I had hoped for and I will now happily sell on my 23mm. I will be out on Tuesday on Dartmoor to specifically use this lens in the field but I am not expecting any disappointments.

la-la-la-la "fingers in ears" la-la-la-la

I'm not a massive filter user so the issues with vignetting wouldn't bother me. I'm off for a week of photography in Scotland shortly, will have to stitch images if I want anything wider than the GF30mm, but I want to see how I get on before "investing" - might need a new car first though as I think the clutch is starting to slip in my current Volvo, but then again it has done 240K miles! Cost of clutch replacement = value of car!

TBH David the Vignetting doesn't bother me either I lived with it on the 23mm and like you I don't use filters too much with my GFX I keep them for my Bronica MF Film stuff I just thought some folks might like to know as I've not seen any of the reviewers mention it. I'll keep this thread up to date after next Tuesday's Photowalk I'm going back to Venford Falls on Dartmoor where I have shot the 23mm with limited success.

Well the loan GFX arrived today and rather than do the sensible thing and read the instructions I went out to see what it was like. I like the images from my Olympus OM1 but the GFX definitely look better. I like the fact that you can expose for up to 60 minutes without being on bulb. It did seem that the histogram was way way off when the 10 stop filter was in place. In fact it stopped moving at all after a certain point.
What I like about the Oly is the "live time" feature where you can actually see the image and histogram building up on the LCD ,
I am sure I will succumb to temptation and buy a GFX with 35 - 70 lens. What other lens would be a good addition for landscapes?
I have another couple of days before it needs to go back and it looks like i will have a good mix of weather to rest it in!

The new 20-35 would fit right in..........................

I was thinking that but maybe something like the 100 - 200
I have the 100-200 and whilst it's a great lens I'm not a big lover of long lens landscapes. If I could only pack 2 lenses for landscapes from what I own it would be the 32-64 and 20-35. I can live without a long lens in the landscape.

I love the GFX 100! An environmental portrait shoot today reminded me how much I love working with Fuji for this type of work. Hopefully, the images are approved and I can share them in due course.

What filter is recommended for protection on Fuji lenses. The Fuji ones are very expensive.

Personally I don’t want anything in front of the gfx lenses that might degrade the quality. I use the lens hood for a bit of protection mostly.

I would stick to the higher quality brands if you do still want a filter you normally get what you pay for.

Use the hood, I’ll only put a filter on for protection on like a beach or dusty environment - my view is that I’m not paying a lot of money for lenses with optimised coatings only to put a flat piece of glass on front!!!

If you are worried about impact damage, get a decent insurance policy!!!
