Digital Medium Format Thread

I would need reasonable AF for dimly lit music venues, I’ve got acceptable results from an XT-3 at ISO 10,000 in the past. I have plenty of time to compose but when I fire it needs to nail it.

Contrast Detect AF needs just that 'contrast'!! - The X-T3 has phase dectect AF and is likely to work much better.

BTW I would put the GFX50S AF speed about the same an an X-T1 so I would be very surprised if the 50S II matched the X-T3 especially with the X-T3 firmware AF update.

My step daughter does a lot of this type of photography, here current weapon of choice is a Canon R6 with 24-70 F2.8 amd 70-200F2.8 lenses, that the other thing against the GFX system for this type of work is that there is not a lot of fast glass, and certainly no fast zoom (meaning that the ISO is likely to be bumped further still)

Thanks David, as I suspected then.

You seem to change cameras more often than I change my pants ;)

From memory you has a 50S, may I ask why you went for a 100S .
Only had the 50S for about a month around Easter. Then decided to stick with Full Frame.
Simply couldn't shake the feeling that I'd not given Medium Format enough time.
David @Mr Perceptive pointed me in the direction of used 100s at a good price (£4000)
Giving it another go, still have my Sony Full Frame gear.
Just the one Fuji lens at the moment, GF45
I've got a couple manual focus primes to adapt, still waiting for adapters to arrive from China.
Financially it's a bit tight, might have to decide in favour of one over the other.

Just to add, the 100s because it has phase detect AF, otherwise i'd probably have gone for the 50Sii

Better luck this time around :)

As much as I love my 50R I have much GAS for a 50SII or a 100S ARGGHHHHH, resistance is futile .....

I thought for a long time (for me) about replacing my destroyed GFX50S with either a GFX50SII or a 100S (fortunately for @trevorbray I'd made that decision before I saw the second user 100S!! - even though I was on a customer site that day and didn't re-order a 50S until the day after)

The 50S whilst offering an upgrade isn't a huge upgrade on the original 50S - IMO IBIS is only of real benefit with longer focal length lenses (as in what a lot of what I want to shoot (outdoors) the weather especially wind causes the target to move - so I would end up bumping the ISO anyway to get the required shutter speed), I've been happily handholding at 1/30th sec with wider focal length lenses.

The faster AF whilst nice, certainly isn't a showstopper for me. Not having seen a GFX50SII in action, I'm sure its faster than an original 50S but it won't be a massive step forward.

On the flip-side, I love the tiltable EVF (one of the reasons I bought the 50S in the first place) and the camera is significantly cheaper at the moment than a 50SII and the kit lens although nice wasn't (again) why I bought into the GFX, I wanted a small set of primes.

In your situation you potentially have a body shape change, which will give you a body with hand grip.

The 100S, again while nice, gives huge files with resolution that I just don't need, yes the ability to crop and still have high resolution would be nice, IBIS has slightly more use with the 100S as the sensor is higher density, and its purchase price would mean that I would not be able to buy the glass I wanted.

I'm meeting a friend on Friday who has a 50SII with 35-70, so I will be able to get some sort of side by side comparison, and report back my findings.

Actual LOL Trev, i'm sure it is, you must have about £12k of gear now

Still evaluating Medium Format for my needs.
I don't need it.
But then I zoom in on the detail.
Evaluation continues..
..and the colour..

I've pretty much now convinced myself that MF won't suit my needs due to AF, but I'm still going to keep me eye on it. Another thing I've noticed with MF is how clean the images are, whereas with the A9 etc I often see what looks like a type of dithering, possibly related to low noise treatment though.

I’m with you on the AF. Thankfully most of my subjects are static or slow. Last weekend out with my Fuji shooting motorcycles I had a fleeting chance to grab a portrait of a red haired biker chick. She gave me the nod and a smile, Fuji eye af just didn’t..
..that’s when I wished I had the Sony in my hand.
Not sure I wanna carry both cameras.

Lovely David. One of those pictures that is best viewed large. Full of hidden details. Love the crop.

Thanks, its the standard 65:24 crop, I switch the camera to it when framing (saving the RAW+JPG), then re-crop to that size when editing the RAW - 25MP file from GFX50 and will be 50MP from your bad boy camera!

100% crop - @trevorbray - just imagine what the 100S would be like!

Out today with a couple manual focus lenses with dumb adapters .

First the canon FD50mm f1.4
These shot wide open, just out of camera jpeg's.
Wanted to post, won't have time to process the RAW for a while.
No crops here.

Nice set Trevor, the B&W suits them. I've never seen such clean bikes though, that BSA looks almost like a model the way the Dof has rendered it. (y)

Severe envy - not so much for a medium format camera (my talents barely justify what I have!) but for some of the bikes in Trevor's posts.

Thanks. Must be honest. I chose the Acros film sim with Red Peaking in order to aid my manual focusing. Working pretty well. Had a few missed focus of course. Tremendous fun and really wanted to shoot some shallow depth of field stuff. The more I use this outfit the more I love it.

That's a really nice set Trevor (but what's a Riley? ;) ).

Really like the old kettle, a bike I always wanted but never got (had a GT550 for a while).

I had a Sammy 85 f1.4 for my Nikon system, and really liked it - possibly the sharpest lens I ever had for that camera.

Thanks mate. Appreciate your reply. You’re right about the Sammy. I also used to have a Nikon version when I had my D700 and my Fillum F2

I don't get on with the peaking for MF I tend to turn off assistance and rely on the magnification of the focus area. I don't usually need MF with my GFX but when out in the landscape with my X-T2s I find the AF not 100% reliable so use MF even with the AF lenses.

Even though I have a Bobber (the one above is a Bobber Black - fat front wheel), I'd love a speed twin. Ideally an earlier one with a girder front end. However, rear suspension is a must these days - my back's fragile enough with springs, let alone on a hardtail/rigid!

Nice to see an unrestored example of a classic Brit twin.
