Yes
So it was announced today that the price of oil is the lowest it has been since 2005, at just under $50 a barrel. Can someone tell me then why are we still paying at least £1.05 a litre of diesel when petrol is now about 90.9p a litre? It used to be that diesel was a few pence cheaper than petrol, then over the last few years it went a few pence above the price of petrol. Now it is still about 15p dearer.

Come on you thieving fuel retailers, bring the price of diesel down too. :bat:

I agree! :bang:

can anyone tell us why Diesel is more expensive now?

I was listening to the radio today and it is expected that Diesel will drop back below the price of petrol, I had a couple of calls during the broadcast so didn't hear it all but I think they were saying the higher price is due to the demand and the difficulty in meeting the demand with production methods they have in place, anyway, as I say I didn't hear it all, it was on Radio Cumbria about 8.45am I think !

Thats the only reason i can find!

Diesel costs less to produce than petrol as its not as refined! go figure :cuckoo:

I understand it's a supply and demand issue, whilst there are more diesel vehicles on the road there is no significant increase in the refining capacity for diesel. Basically we have to import refined diesel hence why we have to pay more.

Or at least this is what I am told.

isn't it cos the oil companies are robbing b'stards?

Oil price goes up today, fuel price up tomorrow for the extra cost.

Oil price comes back down tomorrow, we don't see the drop for a few weeks, whilst the change in cost "filters through to the pump"

Yeah, more likely they hope we get used to paying more so they can keep charging more.

Oil profits up by a huge amount cos of the price rises, thanks greedy oil companies.

too many tankers getting hijacked :p

Oil is paid for about three months in advance of when we get it at the pumps.

The $50 barrel price we shall see in about three months time.

It takes a while for the reduction to filter down.

In addition to all the other reasons it remains more expensive that in 2005, don't forget that there is more tax per litre now than then.

Is everyone still paying full whack for their petrol and diesel?

Do you work for BP, Shell or some other oil company ;) . Like lawrie29 said, oil price goes up and we see an increase at the pumps pretty much within a day or two, it's never left for three months and then increased.

gordons goons take lots of money when you buy diesel, and the petrol companies have shareholders to placate..

That's not entirely true anymore.

Diesel is indeed cracked from the oil before petrol but then the sulphur has to be removed. Since our diesel became "ultra low sulphur" the plain diesel then has to be refined further using some very expensive equipment. All in all there are some significant additional costs involved.

Having said that we're still being ripped off; oil price has fallen 75%, petrol & diesel ........well haven't!

I was going to say it's to do with supply and demand.

If the demand is high, it makes sense to increase prices. Increased prices = increased profits (Looking at it to the point of a business)

I have a few friends within shell, they were telling me last month that diesel should dip below the pound barrier around Christmas time.

It wasn't too long ago we were paying £1.25 :(

strange then how we pay more the very moment the price of the raw stuff goes up instead of 3 months after........

I remember paying less than 50p a litre for unleaded in 1998. Good ol' days!

Athough I don't doubt some of you remember paying about 50p for gallon of 4 star  You old gits. :naughty:

I switched to diesel after all the hype a few years back about it being cheaper and better for the environment - which was just in time for the government to change it's mind and declare it the fuel of the devil :bonk:

I think at that time they increased the tax on derv, which is partly responsible for making it more expensive than petrol.

TBH, i remember going to the petrol station with my dad when i was probably around 4/5, and it was about 42pence per litre for petrol.

I'm only 21 now...

Simon is right I think. One article on the Today Programme a while back said that demand for Diesel was outstripping refining capacity. One of the major factors that caused a huge increase in demand was that massive earthquake in China earlier in the year. This was caused by the sheer number of trucks shuttling aid into the affected region.

I'm sure prices will drop now we're in a recession. As people buy less, so the need to transport stuff around decreases, so demand will naturally fall. As will the price.

I'm glad I don't have a diesel car any more.

Well I'm not sure I'd agree there, although I am miffed at the price of diesel at the moment, the fact that I can get about 70mpg on a good run out and only pay £35 a year road tax, may mean that I am still better of than I would have been with a petrol car at 45mpg and £120+ a year car tax.

:agree: As I'm getting 74.5mpg average mileage and the £35 road fund licence, I'd be happy if diesel was the same price a petrol never mind cheaper.

50 pence a gallon, that would have been an expensive garage back in the day.

I can remember four for a pound . That's four gallons for a pound!!!

I did 620 miles yesterday at 29 mpg. Another 300 will be done today. Can someone tell me why I sold my LPG'ed car? :bang:

Still, I get 5% fuel spend back which is something. save5percent.info

I love my V8 Disco on LPG: currently costing 49p (or less) :) Cheaper to run than a diesel car returning 50mpg or a petrol car returning 40mpg....and it's a V8

.........I remember when petrol cost less than £1........per gallon!

I was in denmark at the beginning of the month and their deisel is the same price as they're petrol in most places or there's onlt pence difference between them. Rip-off Britain, need I say more?
