weekly Delta Skies 2012 52 Week Challenge - Week 52 "Busy" added

Hi Peter,

Catching up with some of the 52ers, but there is a few to get through.

I like both shots for fear, the colour version works and so does the other. I do like the border though. I must put borders on more of my stuff.

Peter, finally got to your 52.
Wk 1 great take, although there's alot going on in the shot, the compass keeps bringing you back to the main focal point.
wk 2 , like the thought process, both colour and mono work, like the border effect on the mono, but think the red around the eyes in pic 1 sells it for me.
looking forward to seeing the next 50 weeks

ahhh Peter i am also catching up.

Direction well thought out and some real attention to detail in the set up, great shot that i like a lot.

Fear, can't make my mind up between them, think that if i was to be pushed it would be the B/w version for me

Hi Peter,

Liking your start to the challenge, the direction shot is very nicely composed, I did try something similar but it wasn't nearly as good as yours!

I'm enjoying seeing how different people have taken on the Fear theme. Think this is a brilliant idea, and for me it's no2, for me the mono version is much more sinister.

Looking forward to seeing your next post.

Carol

Carol / Darren - Thanks for taking time to leave some feedback. Looks like another split vote between the colour and B&W versions.

B+W for me as well. I get what you were trying to achieve with this, and the B+W processing helps to convey that more I think

Hi Peter,

Finally got around to your thread - there are so many on here at the moment. A HUGE pat on the back to anyone who's getting around all of them in a week

I think I'm going to have to vote for the colour version for fear.
While I agree that the B&W suits the mood better, I'm finding that with the darkness and amount of blur in the image the colours are needed to define the different elements. Perhaps it may be worth playing around with the colour temperature though to give it a more eerie feel?

I have no idea what your neighbours must have made of this, but I bet Thomas had fun with it and the end result works really well. This is one instance where a pin sharp shot would definitely have been a hindrance - the blur and shake really add a horror film feel to it.

Thanks Nick and Sarah. Another split  I agree about the blur. That was the effect I was after. I tried a few using flash and they really didn't work.

We were up on Sutton Bank yesterday near the end of the runway and this glider was towed past us on the way up. The aeroplane was obviously noisy but the glider seemed to fly past with a sigh of breath.

Sigh by Delta Skies, on Flickr

I didn’t notice at the time but the canopy had a strange almost opaque effect on it. I’m not sure whether it was the angle of the light or maybe it was steamed up with the sighs of the pilot and passenger before it heads over cliffs of Roulston Scar.

Really nice Peter, its a tough theme this week, its simple, sharp and clean, my type of photo

wow lovely shot, also a good interpretation of the theme, I was wondering if I could convey the concept of wind sighing through trees  but you've managed it

nice idea... i'm MEGA struggling with this! lol

I like the interpretation of the theme, very different from what you would normally think about Sigh,

A difficult non-expected shot to get I imagine.

Chris

Great picture Peter. It doesn't say sigh to me without your explanation (nor does mine), but you're right, they do sigh!

I was thinking the same summer but I reckoned it would be difficult at this time of year without leaves on the trees.

Great capture Peter and a good interpretation

Direction : Clear and fits the theme perfectly. I wonder if it a small crop from the RHS would improve it ??

Fear : Very clever, and works so well... great take on theme

Sigh : Ah... lovely... the gentle sighing of the breeze on the airframe outside... excellent take on the theme. Might look better without the tow rope though.

Another crisp and clear image - like the interpretation of the theme. I wonder about composition - maybe some more of the sky and following rule of thirds to place the glider in the top left or bottom left third? Difficult to do, I know, when taking a fast moving subject.

Liz, Summer, Darren, Clawz, Chris, Alex, Mark, Phil, Marsha, John, Simon - Many thanks for taking time to provide some feedback.

I have to say this week's challenge had me stumped for some time. I was lucky I guess. I went to take pictures of landscapes and the setting sun and happened to be buzzed overhead by gliders and their towing planes (there must be a more technical terms for them). I have to say I've never flown in a glider but there must be quite a thrill to take off over the top of a cliff that must go down about a couple of hundred metres.

Hi, Peter, fear, wow, I would not want that guy to pounce on me.

It's #1 for me. Primarily because of the red around the eyes. I also like the yellow on the LH side. For me, I'd like to see a tad left blur.

Sigh, well captured. Not an easy photograph to compose in camera I suspect. I thought it would benefit from some off the bottom but I like it how it is...it really emphasises the calmness of flying in a glider (I'd recommend it to anyone). Icing on the cake would be a tad more on the front.

Cheers.

A difficult week, but i think you have captured "sigh", think cropping a little off the bottom would have enhanced the shot, but only my view. It is simple, clear, and spot on.
well done

Thanks for the feedback Andy and Steve. I have to admit cropping is one of my weak areas and do agree it would look better with the bottom taken off.

Hi, Peter, fear, wow, I would not want that guy to pounce on me.
That's the nice young lad you met at the evening of the wire wool spinning

Lovely shot , just looks slightly odd having the tow line poking out the front as it does though.

Cheers

Steve

Nice photo but I hate flying so no points from me ;) :P

Well done for conquering the hard week

Nice idea for the theme.. says sigh to me. Nice and sharp - pnly minor crit - for me too much space at the bottom.

Hi Peter,

Lovely shot for your direction, with your Wainwright, map and compass. Three directional elements in 1 frame, I just like it.

The Fear.... Bloody Heck. Don't you ever come trick or treating round my house. I'll have the doors bolted and the dogs in the grounds. Excellent :)

Sigh. Well it is just lovely. The nice sky, good lighting and the peacful impression you get from seeing these things. Nice.

And there's me thinking I had caught up last night :bonk:

Wk1 - By the looks of the posted date your Direction shot was one of the first, great composition and really like the addition of the book

Wk2 - Out of the two I am preferring the colour shot, to me it seems to show more depth, but there again the B&W has that creepy look with the blur - Nice pic's

Wk3 - With your description that sure fits the theme well, a great sharp image, well caught

Good luck with the rest of your 52... look forward to seeing what comes next

If you ever get the chance, do it; it's stunning! And if possible, do one with a tow launch and one with a winch launch, as they're VERY different. Only thing is, DON'T do the latter if you don't like roller coasters!

Thanks Steve. I must admit that I've only seen the take off with a winch.

Nice photo but I hate flying so no points from me ;) :P

Thanks. I agree above the space

The idea sounds good but I'm not sure I would like it. Definitely don't like rollercoasters so at least that discounts one method.

After an evening playing with sugar, a macro lens and the extension tubes I eventually decided on this one. You will not believe how hard it is to stack sugar granules on top of each other :bang:
