Thanks Liz. Sarah will vouch for how frustrating it was. I was going for a stack of 5 (odd number) but my record was 4 so I eventually settled for 3 instead. Even then the slightest nudge or movement and I was back to square one again. I even tried using a bit of water as a type of glue but as we all know sugar dissolves in water so that was no use. I was wondering whether to remove the colouring on the top one in pp but kept it in because I felt it added to the image rather than making look totally monochrome.and well done for managing it Peter, if you hadn't said it was sugar i wouldn't have known, like the light on the top one
Thanks for the feedbackHi Peter,
Like the colours in your sigh shot, for me it'd be a sigh of relief that it landed safely!
Your take on sweet is lovely, like everything about it, the colour and the reflection. Was it shot on a mirror?
Carol
Thanks for the comments.Wow, sweet is amazing; can't fault it! I'd love to know how you lit it, and what sort of background/base you used?

Carol/Mark - Believe it or not I shot it using my iPad as a light table. I experimented later with glass but struggled a bit. The ipad screen gave me both a mirrored effect from the surface as well as some upward coloured lighting. The main lighting source was a torch - I found flashes just too powerful given the effect I wanted coming up from the surface.

Like the slight color top n bottom....really nice work mister
Thanks BenFantastic work!!

Thanks Mark. The black background comes from the fact I didn't use a background so the drop off of light on the subject meant the rest comes out black. I'll also post another shot for you in a few minutes to show a different take on using the iPad for this. The even better news for me is that I've been told I've won one in a competition at workFantastic! I have an app on my iPad called DavesLightBox, but I haven't found a use for it yet; you've inspired me!
But, given that set-up, how did you get the black background?
Thanks JoeThat is an amazing shot - I don't quite believe it
Great work!!
Go away  In fact I'll try it if you can manage itBy the way, I think it would have looked better 6 grains high![]()

Thanks Phil. That is an awesome shot.![]()
Thanks for the comment MartinThat sugar stack is awsome and so well lit.
Thanks for the comments Nathalie. I did try the off centre version so know what you mean.Sweet - What a brilliant idea! I love the reflection, the black background and the light. If you want me to be super picky, I would have preferred them a little off center in the frame rather than bang in the middle - but, regardless, I think this is an awesome photo.
Thanks for the catch up on feedback Lynne. It's hard to keep with all this isn't it.Hi Peter
sorry for the delay in catching up with your thread
Fear....love it...color version for me...all cri's been posted so just afrom me
Sigh.....lovely shot , great colors
Sweet....impressedLike the reflection...spent some time trying to workmout which grain it started at but gave up
Like the slight color top n bottom....really nice work mister

Thanks for spoiling my fun Andy. Yes they are actually sugar crystals but they are still damn small when you try to pick them up with tweezers. Focussing was the other major problem I had with this. Finding something to focus on when the subject is translucent is a nightmare. So, they are actual granules of sugar...as in the small ones
Wow, if so. This is one of my favourites so far. The black BG is well done and the focus is a majorfrom me,
Yeah, liking this one
Cheers.
Thanks for the comments DKPeter... well what can I say - Fantastic, from the thought, to the staging and through to the execution - Stunning Shot![]()
I thought I was really well behaved :shrug:All I can say is well done Peter, I know how difficult it was to set this up!!
To everyone else - just be glad you were not in this house last night - patience!!![]()

Thanks for spoiling my fun Andy.
Thanks BenGreat shot Peter, I too attempted capturing macro shots of sugar crystals but mine weren't too successful!
Not sure who Darren isWow, love the way you stacked those sugar crystals Darren
Very good lighting and DOF, I likey a lot
, but thanks anywayAndy - I maybe should have put a smiley after that. Don't worry I wasn't taking it the wrong way. I actually read it as a question anyway.Peter, not sure if you misunderstood what I was saying, in actual fact, I meant to type "So, are they actual granules of sugar...as in the small ones".
Just needed to clarify because it was very impressed and wanted to make sure I managed to convey this![]()
Thanks for the comments Matt. The stacking was done using tweezers and lots of patience (although as you can see above, Sarah is challenging the latter).Great set of photos, the sweet shot has literally blew me away, how the hell did you stack granules of sugar , seriously impressed.
Matt
Thanks Nick. Yeah at first it seemed too easy (certainly compared with last week) and then I realised I wanted to do something differentWell, you are so much more patient than I could ever be!!
Well done on this one, quite a tricky theme to get an original image, but you have more than managed it!![]()
Thanks MarshaWow, your sweet shot is awesome, such amazing detail.
Glad you like it.I'll say this - you're much more patient than I'll ever be!
Good shot though and def an interesting one to look at.
Cheers Nick.'Sweet'

Nick
Thanks TrevorGreat idea and well executed

Thanks CarolWould never have guessed that in a million years! lol It worked very well.
Carol
Thanks for the feedback Richard. Focussing is definitely a fine art for these.Man, I thought focussing on water droplets was hard!
In some ways, I think Sweet was harder than Sigh to find original ideas for but you have certainly managed it and I have to say really well done for pulling it off as it's an awesome shot.
Thanks MichaelHi Peter, a great idea for the theme and very well taken.
Thanks Jon. If you want to borrow the macro lens or extension tubes to give them a go then give us a shout.Really great shot Peter. This is why I need a macro lens or extension tubes. Really want to get into taking shots with such detail.
nice work!
Cheers Richard. It certainly felt bonkers when I was trying to do it.The sweet photo is both brilliant and bonkers !!
