weekly Delta Skies 2012 52 Week Challenge - Week 52 "Busy" added

and well done for managing it Peter, if you hadn't said it was sugar i wouldn't have known, like the light on the top one

Hi Peter,

Like the colours in your sigh shot, for me it'd be a sigh of relief that it landed safely!
Your take on sweet is lovely, like everything about it, the colour and the reflection. Was it shot on a mirror?

Carol

Wow, sweet is amazing; can't fault it! I'd love to know how you lit it, and what sort of background/base you used?

Thanks Liz. Sarah will vouch for how frustrating it was. I was going for a stack of 5 (odd number) but my record was 4 so I eventually settled for 3 instead. Even then the slightest nudge or movement and I was back to square one again. I even tried using a bit of water as a type of glue but as we all know sugar dissolves in water so that was no use. I was wondering whether to remove the colouring on the top one in pp but kept it in because I felt it added to the image rather than making look totally monochrome.

Thanks for the comments.

Carol/Mark - Believe it or not I shot it using my iPad as a light table. I experimented later with glass but struggled a bit. The ipad screen gave me both a mirrored effect from the surface as well as some upward coloured lighting. The main lighting source was a torch - I found flashes just too powerful given the effect I wanted coming up from the surface.

Fantastic work!!

Fantastic! I have an app on my iPad called DavesLightBox, but I haven't found a use for it yet; you've inspired me!

But, given that set-up, how did you get the black background?

By the way, I think it would have looked better 6 grains high :whistling::exit:

Sweet - What a brilliant idea! I love the reflection, the black background and the light. If you want me to be super picky, I would have preferred them a little off center in the frame rather than bang in the middle - but, regardless, I think this is an awesome photo.

Hi Peter

sorry for the delay in catching up with your thread :'(

Fear....love it...color version for me...all cri's been posted so just a  from me

Sigh.....lovely shot , great colors

Thanks Mark. The black background comes from the fact I didn't use a background so the drop off of light on the subject meant the rest comes out black. I'll also post another shot for you in a few minutes to show a different take on using the iPad for this. The even better news for me is that I've been told I've won one in a competition at work

That is an amazing shot - I don't quite believe it

Great work!!
Thanks Joe

Go away  In fact I'll try it if you can manage it

Thanks Phil.

That sugar stack is awsome and so well lit.
Thanks for the comment Martin

Thanks for the comments Nathalie. I did try the off centre version so know what you mean.

Thanks for the catch up on feedback Lynne. It's hard to keep with all this isn't it.

So, they are actual granules of sugar...as in the small ones

Wow, if so. This is one of my favourites so far. The black BG is well done and the focus is a major  from me,

Yeah, liking this one

Cheers.

All I can say is well done Peter, I know how difficult it was to set this up!!

To everyone else - just be glad you were not in this house last night - patience!!:lol::lol::lol:

Thanks for spoiling my fun Andy. Yes they are actually sugar crystals but they are still damn small when you try to pick them up with tweezers. Focussing was the other major problem I had with this. Finding something to focus on when the subject is translucent is a nightmare.

Peter... well what can I say - Fantastic, from the thought, to the staging and through to the execution - Stunning Shot
Thanks for the comments DK

I thought I was really well behaved

Especially for Southdowns.........

Mark, here's the other shot I mentioned above. Instead of shooting level with the iPad screen this one is taken looking down into the screen.

Sweet 2 by Delta Skies, on Flickr

I used a set of different photos on the iPad and chose the area of the image to shoot. This one was an area of sky.

Great shot Peter, I too attempted capturing macro shots of sugar crystals but mine weren't too successful!

Peter, not sure if you misunderstood what I was saying, in actual fact, I meant to type "So, are they actual granules of sugar...as in the small ones".

Just needed to clarify because it was very impressed and wanted to make sure I managed to convey this

Great set of photos, the sweet shot has literally blew me away, how the hell did you stack granules of sugar , seriously impressed.

Andy - I maybe should have put a smiley after that. Don't worry I wasn't taking it the wrong way. I actually read it as a question anyway.

Thanks for the comments Matt. The stacking was done using tweezers and lots of patience (although as you can see above, Sarah is challenging the latter).

Well, you are so much more patient than I could ever be!!

Well done on this one, quite a tricky theme to get an original image, but you have more than managed it! :D:thumbs:

'Sweet'

Great idea I really like the concept. you must be very dextrous to arrange that shot ! look forward to seeing your week 5

Thanks Nick. Yeah at first it seemed too easy (certainly compared with last week) and then I realised I wanted to do something different

Wow, your sweet shot is awesome, such amazing detail.
Thanks Marsha

I'll say this - you're much more patient than I'll ever be!

Good shot though and def an interesting one to look at.
Glad you like it.

Would never have guessed that in a million years! lol It worked very well.

Carol

Man, I thought focussing on water droplets was hard! ;)

In some ways, I think Sweet was harder than Sigh to find original ideas for but you have certainly managed it and I have to say really well done for pulling it off as it's an awesome shot.

Thanks for the feedback Richard. Focussing is definitely a fine art for these.

Hi Peter, a great idea for the theme and very well taken.
Thanks Michael

The sweet photo is both brilliant and bonkers !!

Stacking Sugar granules !!

You must have the patience of a saint Peter stacking sugar granules
Great lighting and focus on this subject, not much more to add, its all been said above  Iain

Really great shot Peter. This is why I need a macro lens or extension tubes. Really want to get into taking shots with such detail.

nice work!
Thanks Jon. If you want to borrow the macro lens or extension tubes to give them a go then give us a shout.
