Good on Sarah...nice bit of friendly competition

As for searching through backups, anyone who does that really misses the point of this project.

Looking forward to your first post and subscribed..

Well here we go. My first image of 52. My original aim was to use an old style compass and give the image a retro feel to it. Unfortunately this was the only one I could find at the weekend.

and a Wainwright book, western fells? great stuff

and I notice the map is showing the correct location, even better :)

:plusone:

I'm currently 'doing' the Wainwrights.

Well composed photograph with a great storyline.

For me, minor point, but the compass is a tad central.

Cheers.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Our OS maps are a bit tatty on the creases due to a lot of use up in the hills so I must admit spending a bit of time making sure I found a clean piece and then matching it to one of our Wainwright books. I appreciate the comment regarding the compass being central. I'll keep and eye out for that in the future.

NIce one . it will be good to see how the inter house rivalry develops..

Cheers

Steve

Great Idea! Old compasses are quite hard to come by so i dont blame you for using a newer one. Im a map reading instructor with the British Army so i just LOVE all things maps and navigation! :D

One gripe though... could be a bit brighter, looks like the WB may be off slightly. Apart from that ace shot! ;)

I love the fact you can clearly see the Mountain Rescuse summer only, on the map

Nice shot Fella

Les

Thanks for the additional comments everyone.

Clawz - It's funny you should say that as I held back on the brightness following a couple of comments recently about a couple of my shots being overexposed.

Les - I played about with a range of different apertures and felt 5.6 gave me what I was after. I was concentrating on getting Pillar in focus (plus the subject in the book) so I have to admit that finding a mountain rescue post was purely a fluke.

And as for any talk of inter house rivalry I have to admit defeat for round 1 to Sarah's arrows shot. :notworthy:

Cool idea! Very good thought!

Clawz, I have my Granddad's compass at home from world war 2! Its a MK I Magnetic Marching compass, I will bring it round one night :)

Hi Steve....great way to start your project

Good thinking , nice layout , the compass sort off jumps of the page at me...just maybe a touch more light on it but still liking the shot

Best of luck with your challenge :)

Cool; I like it - decent composition and a well executed shot. Fits the theme neatly. A cracking start!

Very nice Peter, we must think alike, I also chose a magnetic compass and map as part of this week's theme. Good luck with the next 51

With the assistance of my eldest as a knife wielding zombie I've tried to get over the concept of fear with the inspiration coming from the world of scary movies. As such I've tried to keep the images pretty dark. I was originally using flash but no matter how much I tried it was too bright for what I wanted so I resorted to a couple of torches. I also purposely (honest) kept a longish exposure to get some blur in to the shot. I did try some zoom burst as well but they again didn't come out as good.

I've added a couple of edits of the same image so would appreciate some feedback between the colour or B&W versions.

You are on this one early. I'm still pondering. Thomas is coming in very handy for this photography stuff!

I think I like #2. Both convey fear well but the edit and border of #2. The blur is very reminisant of the shakey camera you get in scary movies so adds to the overall effect.

At first I preferred no1 but after looking again I have changed my mind and have gone to no2.

I was wondering (along with the neighbours) what you and Thomas were doing down the bottom of the garden!!:lol:

Nice concept, i think I prefer the cplour. The red around the "eyes" adds to the demeneted nature of it. perhaps try one of those B&W images with a single colour, just keeping the red circles?

Thanks Alex. Yeah the blur was planned.

I'm sure they've got used to our antics by now

For me the colour is more about the orange in the background but I see what you mean about the red ring around the eyes. I might give it a go.

I really like this and the blur adds to the nightmarish quality. Am undecided on either the bw conversion or the straight colour varient. I like the red around the eye socket but find the yellow light quite distracting. Maybe tone the yellow to something colder - possibly even blue, or at least take some of the intensity (saturation) out.

I prefer #2 as it's stark and dark and captures the theme nicely. I can imagine this image on a t-shirt for skull loving consumers! Think they work really well Peter. Good luck with rest of your challenge.

Hi Peter, Sorry bit late getting to you..

Direction - Nice take on the theme and like that the composition with the compass being the main point of my attention. Also like the lighting and colour.

Fear - Another good take on the theme, I persoanlly prefer the colour version and I think the torches provided a nice effect.

Look forward to seeing the next 50 :)

Thanks for your comments on both.

Thanks. I was keen to get the blur. Using torches rather than flash obviously helps. I may give your suggest about toning down the yellow a go later.

#2 for me too, the colour adds to it particularly the yellow for some reason.

Thanks for the comments everyone. They are appreciated. The split of preferences continue between the colour and B&W versions. I must admit to have changed my mind more than once.
