Hi all,

Just a general query and I'm hoping for a bit of advice if possible please.

We have timber decking out back, it hasn't been treated since it was installed around 3-4 years ago. I'm in the process of cleaning and sanding all the deck and handrails etc. but then it comes to finishing it..... Here lies the problem.... Do I use oil, or deck stain, or both, protector first then oil ?
Anyone on the forum able to offer any guidance help and advice? Anyone in the profession? Anyone had the same dilemma? If so what did you use? And how does it look now?

I bought some ronseal deck oil from B&Q but I've since learnt it's not the best product, so while searching around for an alternative I came across that much conflicting advice my brain has turned to decking oil/stain mush!!!!!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Rich

We bought it mainly on the basis it offered non-slip properties. Wasn't disappointed as the decking stays completely safe to walk on when it's wet.

Our decking's about 6mx4m, when we moved in it was in a pretty bad way and took the best part of 2 tins to cover it properly. Needed a quick going over this year and it only took about half a tin

Hi Russ

Thanks for the info and product link. I looked at that many stains and oils in B&Q (for about an hour) that I just got the most expensive on the shelf (£40) thinking it must be the best...

Do you know the difference between the stain and the oil?

Did your decking need much repair work prior to painting with this stuff?
Ours wasn't too bad, just a bit grey (green in places) but it's coming up really nice with a bit of 60 grit and a power wash.

Russ, that deck looks like a nice place to spend a lazy afternoon.

TBH I'm a bit of a DIY novice, my main criteria was to make the decking as safe as possible in the wet as just prior to painting it I'd heard of several friends having nasty falls on theirs (without the help of alcohol too  )

Mine was pretty much bare wood when I first did it so I jetwashed it and gave it a good scrub.

I'd worry about putting oil on the decking as this would probably make it the most slippery when wet (although would probably offer the best protection)

You're not wrong, when we had a couple of nice weekends, I went for a little sit out there and twice I woke up an hour later

West facing garden so we get lots of lovely sunshine in the evenings too :)

Guys, thanks for the info and advice, I think I'm going to take this Ronseal oil back and go with the Liberon oil instead as I've seen it recommended a lot more than the Ronseal....... End of the day, if it doesn't work or it's too slippery, I'll jet wash and sand again and use the stain with grip.

Appreciate the replies, thanks again.

Rich
