dan_yorkshire's 52 2010 (Week 26 - Beginnings (Pg 15)

Right on theme and works really well in B & W.
The focus works well and I don't think you really need to see more of the bike as it would take the focus of the brakes slightly

understand what you mean about showing more of the bike but this image does fit the theme very nicely.

Cheers

point of focus is just right.

black and white works well.

bang on theme. Well done

I don't think anybody has liked this weeks theme :shake:

Andy

:) Better theme this week so no excuses to get out with the camera!!

Thanks mate, glad you agree with less of the bike.

Dan

I think the winning aspect of this shot is the simplicity and the thought behind it. Bike brakes. Great idea.

It's well executed too although maybe the brakes clamping onto the wheel might have been thematically better. The B&W does the shot justice and it's certainly on-theme.

Ian.

I like the idea on ingredients, not sure on the composition, I think the pestle and mortar is rather distracting and the ingredients seem a bit lacking.

Stop on the other hand works perfectly. Spot on for the theme.

Cheers Ian, most of my images I try and keep simple, glad I've managed a more unique take on the theme.

Thanks John, agree with the ingredents comments (gonna attempt a reshoot of that when I get time)

Glad you like the stop shot

Finally a theme that had me thinking of different ideas and got me out and about with the camera. Managed to get 3 shots!!

The first is the one I had in my mind from the start, its the bridge where myself and my wife had our wedding photos taken at and it randomly in the middle of a field in the middle of nowhere, isolated you could say.....
Thought it needed someone in the shot so go the wife to walk into the shot from the left, it was raining and think here umbrella adds to the shot as it helps seperate her from the background.

4650508065_2f54911f69_b.jpg

The second shot is one I wanted to do to portray agoraphobia which isolates people from the outside world. Again I used my wife and wanted it to look quite dark.

4651202234_4642501c7e_b.jpg

The last shot is a bonus one, when driving back from the bridge shot I spotted a barn house in the middle of a rapeseed field, thought the colours were really nice and helped isolate the barn even more.

4650599399_c9cbcc7065_b.jpg

Still not sure which is my best but I'm just pretty chuffed to do 3 I'm happy to put on the thread.... and a day early too.

3 really good shots there from you for this week. However, if I had to rank them in order of preference, I would say 2-3-1. I think your wife's facial expression in image 2 really does demonstrate agoraphobhia in how she almost looks scared of the outside world and feels isolated. Not just that, the lighting also isolates her from the background which I really like.
Th barn shot is cool too - really like contrast between the colourful rapeseed field and barn and the moody sky although in my opinion, I think there is a bit too much sky in the frame and the image could do with a slight crop so there is a little less sky. The first image doesn't do a lot for me but what matters is that it's personal to you and I think adding your wife with the brolly definitely has worked well.

Cheers mate, I agree with the sky, just quickly cropped a little of it off, dont think it needed much.

Think its the agoraphobhia I like the best too, its people photography I want to get into eventually so this had more of my attention than the other two

Stop - good idea and composition, works well in mono and perfect DOF.

Isolation-
1. good composition again but the lighting is very flat, not surprising given the conditions.
2. Excellent and really conveys the sense of isolation.
3. Also very good - I like the composition and the colours (and was looking for something similar myself without success!).
My fav is no.2 - it has something special. Well done!

3 strong shots but for me the 2nd shot says Isolation more than the other two.

Hi Dan,
Got a bit behind with comments lately, so catch up time for me.

Ingredients : Well lit, nice and sharp and some great colours. The composition lacks a bit for me though. A bit too square and symmetrical if that makes sense.

Stop :  Bang on theme and nicely composed with just the right amount of DoF.
Works very well in B&W too.

Isolation : Your agoraphobia shot is spot on
The contrast of the dark indoors and light outside make it for me - and you've got that white sheet to stop the indoors aspect from being too completely black.
While I like the other two, this one is just head & shoulders above them.

Number one doesn't do it for me I'm afraid. I can understand your reasons for taking it though. I think it is the lack of tonal range that spoils it for me. The black and white needs more range to stand out and not look so flat.

Number two is superb. It is a really strong image. Well composed, well set-up and well lit. One for you as a photographer and your wife as a model to be proud of.

Number three is good but not in the same league as number two. I always seem to have an issue with OOF strong foregrounds. Maybe just me

Andy

Dan,

Wow what can I say........ Like them all

1 - what an ornate and pretty bridge to cross a stream/river from a field to field in the middle of nowhere............ Having the Wife with umbrella adds to the shot definately.

2 - that's a disturbing and moving picture. Almost has "Charity Poster" screaming at me..... lucky you have such a willing model. Sharon runs a mile usually if I point a lens anywhere near her.

3 - I just like - unusual barn, but I am getting bloody fed up with oil seed rape round here in Norfolk now...........

3 excellent shots for the theme, my pick is the second with your wife. It's a moving image. The 1st works, but needed your wife with the brolly. I think the barn works nicely.

The middle shot with your wife is the pick of the bunch for me Dan , love the expression on her face and the darkness in the room.

Thanks Chris, her expression became better as time passed as she became more and more disinteresed.

3 strong shots but for me the 2nd shot says Isolation more than the other two.

Cheers Darren

Much appretiated Sarah, again I'm pleased the agoraphobia shot is getting good feedback.

I wouldnt say she was so willing.... but it added towards the expression on her face.

Cheers John, another vote for number two, pleased with that.

Cheers everyone, week 22 below.

Isolation - I like number 2 .. although I also like number 3. Your wife is a very good actress - her expression certainly shows fear and isolation of agoraphobia.

Quality - nice one - can't beat some quality time together.

Fingers crossed here too for a better theme.

What an absolutely garbage theme!!

Never struggled for motivation more than I have this week.

The rain stopped earlier today, just enough for us to pop out for a walk around the block and have a bit of quality time together.

Camera on tripod, remote shutter release.

4675177462_15053a0570_b.jpg

The shot is exactly what I had in mind so thats a bonus.

Please lets have a better theme this week.

Dan

I like your take on a 'garbage' theme  Dan.
I like the composition, particularly the angles in the image, your arms draw the eye down to your clasped hands and then through the scene into the distance. Maybe just needs a bit more contrast to make it pop a bit more but other than that... Iain

I too love your 2nd Isolation shot! Very well captured!

Quality has worked really well also.... I had some nice ideas for quality but nothing I could bring to fruition so well done for getting there!

Good take on this weeks poor theme. Its come out really well and would make a lovely canvas to relax the mood

Yet another catch-up from me, Dan. :)

Ingredients: I can't make up myu mind about this one. I feel there's a good shot to be had, but somehow it doesn't grab me. (Sorry), but I do love that amazing pestle and mortar and I am intruiged by all the ingredients - I've never made curry from scratch! Perhaps there'll be a theme which will lend itself to you posting up a tutorial on making curry. :D:D:D

Stop: Given the theme, I don't think you could have used a different pov - this is spot on. I like the dof and the mono treatment - definitely a good 'un.

Isolation: A totally rubbish theme, and you've managed to come up with three stunning and very different interpretations for it.:clap::clap:

My favourite is #2 and your wife's expression is just right. I love the pose and composition, and there's just the right balance of light from the window and shadows from the left.

#1 is interesting but for some reason I want to see the view from the other side of the bridge, hoping it would give the bridge more prominence in the shot and there would be lots of empty space over on the left to show the isolation. I hope that makes sense! :)

#3 is well-spotted and I like the contrast between the heavy sky and the brilliance of the rape flowers. It's the sort of shot you'd see in a tourist brochure (that's meant to be a compliment, btw) :)

Quality: If this is what you produce when you're not inspired, then I can't wait to see what you produce in a good week! It's a subtle, beautfully crafted shot - well balanced with good use of dof and mono processing. I really, really like it.

Jean

I like it dan, a bit of quality time, and it's come across in the shot nicely.

Only thing I would say... watch what you put, or Simon will be really mean... (And I for one really don't want to have to try and shoot "better" I had enough trouble with quality)

Really like the first two isolation shots, Dan. The rape field one suffers from a lack of vibrancy. I always feel rape need sun to make it glow.

Not a bad attempt at This weeks either, fella. Nice feel to it and compositionally it works. Just a little soft.

I like the composition and the black and white works well.

The only slight distraction is the highlight at the top of the tree inbetween you.

A good image considering you didn't like the theme.

Cheers Iain, pushed the contrast as far as I dare to as because it was a crop of a bigger pic I was already starting to lose sharpness.

I too love your 2nd Isolation shot! Very well captured!

Quality has worked really well also.... I had some nice ideas for quality but nothing I could bring to fruition so well done for getting there!

Thanks Sonia, much appretiated

Ta mate, gonna reshoot it in summer clothes and hopefully have something I can canvas for the wall.

Good point about the rapeseed, its was a bit overcast.

It is a touch soft for quality, it was a crop of a larger pic but I stupidly hadnt noticed the camera was set to low quality jpeg and it started raining so couldnt get back outside. :'(

I like the composition and the black and white works well.

The only slight distraction is the highlight at the top of the tree inbetween you.

post match blues. You failed to score a basket ? Just trying to interpret it! Hope England do better for you in the next match.

One good thing about the dissapointing England result is that the idea I had at the beginning of the week could be executed.

I was so optimistic pre match.

But POST match was a totally different matter.....

Got two weeks worth of comments to cathup this week, forgive me everyone!!

Dan

Nice take on this weeks theme. I have a feeling its how most people are feeling today.

Nice take on the theme Dan, very gloomy image.

I'm with Andy on the quality shot.
A really lovely image (particularly for a poo theme), but that bit of white is just a touch too bright and I'm finding that your wife's sleeve is disappearing into it a bit.
Stunning composition though. The framing is spot on, especially considering that you were using remote release.

Post : A really interesting take on the theme, nicely composed and its lucky that England have white shirts. It stands out brilliantly against the black
Let's hope that you're not feeling the same after the next match . . . unfortunately I have absolutely no idea when that is :$:

Post: I'm sure lots of people share your pain. It's topical as well as on-theme - well done.

I like the composition and mono treatment. I think a couple or 3 squashed beer cans would add to the smile value, but perhaps I'm just assuming footie can't be watched without a beer.

I hope the next match puts a smile on everybody's faces. :)

Jean

I like your post image Dan. I like the subtle lighting on this, also its a creative interpretation of the theme. I can offer no sympathy for the England result though. On account of my being a Jock, it is not in my genes :D. Thats a discussion for another time, now is not the time nor place;)

Your not wrong, I'm now optimistic for this Friday but will probs be gloomy again by Sat morning.

Nice take on the theme Dan, very gloomy image.

Thanks

A different take on the theme and quite amusing. Get that shirt out of the bin and keep cheering them on though- they can still make it!

I know they can Sue... but they wont

Cheers Sarah. Agree with your comment about the blown highlight in the quality theme but wanted to make it look like the pathwent somewhere not just a dead-end of trees.

Beer cans would have been great, did think about a banana skin too to give the shot a tad more colour.

Hahaha - excellent bit of post match analysis :D

England v Scotland is not a light discussion for a nice summer midweek night...

Thanks for your feedback
