D90 Owners Thread - Anything D90 related

So If I have a class 10 card (for example) this would write quicker and thus not slowing down my shots. HELP!!!

Not really. What you've hit is the write speed of the camera rather than the speed of the card. I bought a Class 10 card for just this reason and it was undoubtedly a waste of (the extra) money.

Slow down the frame rate and you'll get more shots before the buffer fills up ... but not many. I tend to set the CL speed to 3fps and find that works for sports like judo/karate/etc.

HTH :)

Thanks for that Bristol. I will try it out over the weekend.

If you shoot in RAW then none of the colour, saturation, etc settings matter they will only be applied to the in cam jpg.

So i take it changing all the vivid is a waste of time.

How about rgb and adobe does that effect it in raw

The D90 firmware has never been updated, that is the only version.

As it happens, there was an update issued yesterday. It is to upgrade lens distortion control. Get it here:

http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/17162

And instructions here:

http://nikonimglib.com/dcdata/manual/En/lensprofile_win_en_ABF.html

Going to do mine right now.

That upgrade has been on the Nikon UK web site since 4th Nov 2010

EDIT: anyone know how to install this with a mac?

Just follow the instructions that are on the web site/download with the file - simples

PS: If the instructions aren't on the Nikon USA web site they are on the UK site.

I see Linkdelight do several different battery grips for the D90, any particular preference, or any to avoid?

I bought THIS ONE and I am very happy with it  not sure about the others available

If it came out in November last year as Bristolian says, they kepy it very quiet. Maybe it is because it is not a A or B firmware upgrade, just a L upgrade and so minor enough not to be important?

It probably only applies if you shoot in jpeg as lens distortion correction is not applied to raw files AFAIK.

AHhh right... thanks

Is the Link Delight grip actually any good? I'm scared of it frying my precious....

A 2 part question!!

Out for the first (proper) time with the new toy this weekend, around Bedgellert. Those who know the area will know of the many waterfalls on offer, so as you guessed, it was on with the ND filter to practice the milky water waterfall shots!

When I used my bridge camera and ND filter, I never noticed the saturation of the image changing to a greyer version, but I did this time! I'm not sure if it's because of the following; any suggestions?..............
- Dodgy filter, it was a cheap one but so was the one for my bridge.
- D90 Auto WB not adjusting correctly with filter on - I did manually change the WB, which appeared to help, but still not the same as without the filter
- Me missing something on the camera!!

Part 2........
Not being happy with the greyness of the images, I took the filter off switched to manual and tried to get the shutter speed as low as possible. Then I found the exposure adjustment button and applied lots of negative to cope with the longer shutter speed. So, 2nd question, is applying negative adjustment the same as putting on a filter?

Thanks for any help/ advice.

Just wondering when using flash do people turn off the auto ISO. I have found it sometimes puts the ISO of way to high when using flash

Also what settings do people find works best with flash and a D90 ?

I never have auto ISO on, ever. I do a lot of off camera work so auto ISO wouldn't work to well.

When Im out and about I always have auto ISO off, I always have it as low as possible, and ply with the aperture and shutter speed before upping the ISO.

Looking to get myself a D90, so I've been looking for accessories to go with it, namely a grip. I've seen an MB-D80 on eBay for under £40. Too good to be true? The seller is top rated, which leads me to think it isn't a scam, but that cheap?! On Amazon it's going for £105...

@Jase_face that seems a bit too cheap for a genuine Nikon one imho...

I had a genuine Nikon grip and sold it last month for 95 Euro, the genuine ones have a problem (not all) with the contacts and it meant i'd be set up for a shot and the cam would just switch itself off.

Heard good things about the cheaper no brand ones like Meike, Link Delight etc. personally I would recommend searching here for peoples thoughts about those...

It'll be a third party copy.

I have a cheap £24 grip for my D90 and it's fine.

Ah, so not the genuine article then? Isn't that a tad...illegal? False advertising or somesuch.

Regardless, does anyone know if it's any good? Or is it worth splashing out for the real thing?

I've got that very one, with the two free batteries and remote. It works fine and hasn't been off my camera in months. It has the additional shutter button for using in portrait orientation too, which has been handy.

The battery door was a teeny bit sloppy when closed so I stuck two little pieces of draught-excluder tape on the door for a snug fit. I'm happy with it :)

It doesn't actually say it is a genuine Nikon item - "replacement of MB-D80" and "functions are the same as the original".

However the grip attached to the camera in the photos is different from the one in the large photos. The grip attached to the camera looks like an original. The one in the main photos has a sliding on/off switch instead of a switch around the shutter release and doesn't look like it has the grippy material on the front.

I just got one of the Meike grips today, and it's good quality, I just need to make sure I don't break it this time.

I'm saving for a D90, I was going for a good used one, but as the asking price still seems to be £450ish, and I'm starting to see new ones at £509, I think I'll wait a bit longer until I can afford a new one. The only question is how much longer are they going to be available as they must be getting close to the end of their life. Does anyone know if Nikon are still manufacturing them?

At £500 for a new one it's well worth hanging on until you can afford it just for the warranty peace of mind. Argueably it has already been replaced by the D7000 but it still shows on the Nikon web site as a current model so I guess they're still manufacturing them. In the past superceded models were removed on the day their replacements were announced.

Unlike PCs and other electronic goods a camera body doesn't become obsolete just because a replacement has been released. There are plenty of people out there (and on here) using old technology dslrs and still getting great results. If the D90 does what you want it to then waiting for its replacement would be purely snobbery.

I got to try out a D7000 for the first time today and was mightely impressed with it - feels good in my hands, is familiar and produces great pictures but it isn't £500 better than the D90 in the areas that matter to me so I won't be buying one any time soon.

HTH :)

Thanks Steve,
That's good advice, I think I can definately afford to wait. I might do with my D50 what you did with one of your lenses. My grand-daughter seems to be showing quite an interest in photography, so unless I can get around £200 including the 18-55 I might let her have it. I have an 18-135, which thinking about it, is the lens you gave to your grandson.

Sorry for the late reply but thanks for the info, yeah I am going to be careful with the auto ISO from now on, keep it towed in a bit :bat:

For grips THESE off ebay are well recommended on here and after buying one myself I can see why
