Thanks Shutterman
I would be using it for a bit of everything really so it would need to jack of all trades.
Really want a D300 but cant justify the money fancied having a go at motorsport a mate has a Tiger race car that he races.
Is the AF in the fuji better than the Nikon for this sort of work ???
Some people will claim the S5 is to slow for motorsport. That doesn't appear to have stopped plenty of racing posts on Flickr from the S5 Pro.
The D80 would handle higher ISO better
I'm also taking an interest in the S5 pro.
Looking at a review somewhere, there's this statement:
The downside is that the S5 is effectively only a 6.17 megapixel camera, since it has 6.17 million ‘S’ sensors and 6.17 million ‘R’ sensors. This may be a total of over 12 million photocells, but there are only 6.17 million cell sites generating image data. Despite this, the S5 produces final JPEG images that are 4256 x 2848 pixels, or 12.12 megapixels, and RAW files that are 3043 x 2036, or 6.98 megapixels, which will inevitably resurrect the old arguments about Fuji’s image interpolation that have been echoing around the forums and letters pages since the Super CCD was first introduced.
I'm confused.com
Can anyone explain what this means?????
Nope, the D80 is the same as the D200. I'd estimate the S5 Pro is about 2/3rd of a stop better than the D200.
The D90 and D300 are a bit better than the S5 Pro, but the S5 Pro is better than any other DX Nikon camera (with the possible exception of the D40)
£899 from Grays![]()

The price is coming down almost daily on stuff like the D300, I noticed up at the top of the page that the price difference between a grey import and a UK one with 2 years warranty was just over a tenner.....
Remember clear-r-gear (Jessops) have been known to list refurb D300s with a 12 month guarantee on Ebay for £640 delivered....
Yes and you know who usually snaps them up in 3 seconds to relist a week later at a much higher price.

For long exposures, I would not really recommend the S5 Pro, as it doesn't have dark current subtraction. Its fine, but you'll see hot pixels once you get much past 8 to 10 seconds.
Yes, I'm sure.

For about 10 seconds, i wouldn't hold my breath waiting to get a D300 at £640
you see now thats really what i wont (D300) AF much more suited to motorsport
need to save a bit longer i know i will only regret not getting the camera i really wont.

The D80 and so I would assume the D200, is pretty awful at long exposures too..
As a D200 user I'm quite tempted by the S5 Pro for the dynamic range but I really like how rugged my D200 is and don't have any reason to change to any other DX body.
Basically my choice is one of the above.
I have three Nikon lens so really wanted to stay with them.
I know the Fuji is Nikon mount
So has anyone any thoughts as too which one i should spend my hard earned on...
I don't Harbour such thoughts, I tend to Filter them out, it's Fantastic![]()
All I can really say, I feel the S5 pro blows the D200 for out of the camera JPEGS, and the raws are far more flexible in terms of range of colours etc. I would use it before my D200 every time.
