D7000 Build Quality/Finish inferior to the early models......

Yes
IMVHO that is.

I had one of the early D7000's and can'r remember any issues with the Build Quality or the Finish.

I took delivery on Friday of new current model and was very dissapointed with it, it felt and looked 'cheap' compared to the early ones.

The battery door being a flimsy abomination with a visible blemish in the plastic and the door projected by about 1mm above the camera body with a battery fitted.

Needless to say it goes back on Monday.

C'mon Nikon get your act together, I have Panny's with excellent BQ & F costing far less than the D7000.

It was not only the body that was Naff, the 16-85mm that came with was no better as regards finish, that's going back with the body.

I'm not a Nikon basher, I've had Nikons from way back, F2, F2A, F3HP, FE, FM and Nikkormats, when quality stood for something.

When I say finish, I mean the general look/feel of a camera.

Is it tactile, do you want to pick it up handle it.

I did once with Nikons but not any more....:'(

Earlier model as in earlier D7000 from first batch or cameras from 20 years ago?

If you want solid cameras, generally you have to go up a level, D800 should be well made enough :)

Although I should say that I've not picked up a D7000, only a D700. My 5D3 however feels nicer than the 5D2.

They have not changed the body of the D7000 its always been a bit plasticky are you sure you have not confused it with the D700?

Having owned different Nikon bodies myself, and currently using a D7000, D90 and D700, the D7000 is disappointingly inferior to even bodies like the D80 and D90. While feel is a different thing, a previous D7000 had to be returned after 5-6 months of standard usage, as the base colour gad faded. Ive heard that is a typical problem with the model. Disappointing really.
It is only a cosmetic issue, as the camera performs excellent, optically, but is disappointing from a £1000 body.

Battery door fallen off mine twice. I Nearly broke the memory card door off it is so week. The Nikon D7000 is a very flimsy and poorly made camera but the sensor is excellent.I will keep mine together with sticky tape if necessary.

Indeed. The sensor is amazing. I don't miss my D700, except for the crop factor element.
But considering the fact that Japanese electronics, (think of those rock solid vintage japanese lenses and cameras!) have always been known for their build quality, it kinda sad.
Good luck with the tape! ;-)

Maybe get a Pentax K-5, considerably better build quality and by all counts makes even better use of the same sensor

You do realise the battery door is meant to be detachable? It doesn't fall off unless you faff about with it while it's open.

Coming from a D2x to a D7000 there is a big gap in build quality, but its still a very substantial camera and as good (if not marginally better) than its contemporaries that I've handled.

Mine is in use every day of the week for both stills and video and aside from handling issues (I have massive hands) its a great camera to usr on a professional basis. Can't see where the issues cine from, although a more textured rubber in the grip would be welcome in the rain...

It's a good camera, but is too small and for a left eye dominant person who back button focuses I found it impossible to use.

Had mine for 18 months now - no battery issues or colour fading. Taken 10k+ pictures with it.
