D300 noise dilemma

I've had my D300 about 6 months, and love it to bits, but I've always been a bit concerned about the amount of noise in my photos. People tell me that I'm looking too closely at the pixels, but I'm not convinced, and I see noise in all my photos, including well-exposed ISO200 images (albeit not immediately obvious).

So i've been corresponding with nikon about it. They say that the noise is within accptable range, but if I'm bothered I should send it to them for testing, with a 2-4 week turnaround! That sounds like a long shot.

The problem is, I've got nothing to compare my photos to. D300 photos on the web have had some sort of processing done to them, so it's difficult to say what's normal. Here's a screenshot of a 100% crop of a photo I took at ISO400, loaded into Nikon Capture NX with no adjustments made.

I could do with some well-exposed RAW images (say shot at between ISO200 and ISO1600) I could compare with my own images for noise. Can anyone oblige, please?

Your linky no worky.

I never liked the D300 low ISO performance relative to the D200 or D2X.

Its normal.

keith, if you like i could pop over for a coffee with mine and you could shoot with yours and mine and compare to see if they are the same.

Bear in mind i am lens-less at the moment as mine are sold and i havnt collected my new one.

That is probably better as for a true comparison you should really use the same lens

that does seem quite noisey for ISO 400.

Its not noisy really, doesn't look perfectly sharp but not noisy.

Thanks guys. Monkey came round and we took a few test shots. Seems like the noise only affects the bottom third of the histogram, and I'm only noticing it on dark blue skies and dark blurred backgrounds. His D300 produced similar results, so I don't think mine's faulty. I just need to make sure I expose well at higher ISO.

that does seem quite noisey for ISO 400.

remember its only a small file anyway ... i would think we need to see the original file the camera produced to properly check this ..
