Today is a good day...
Picked up my D300 this morning for £880 at Currys in Aintree Liverpool, thanks to a combination of Adamski and davidh6781.

I used the "say no to 0870" link provided by Adamski, located a Currys using the local number, quite a few had no interest in helping me! I then called the Church Street branch in Liverpool, spoke with a guy called Dave, very helpful, he confirmed what davidh6781 said and then searched the product data base for me. He located quite a few around the country and one in Aintree! He gave me the direct number for the photographic department were I spoke with Frank who is their main man on cameras.
Now Frank was/is a quite unique character, he loves his job and his cameras! When I first called he explained that the D300 was in his care and although used for display was never handled or messed with, it was only used by serious individuals who had a genuine interest in the camera! I was doing all this from Slovakia while on business, I couldn't pay over the phone and couldn't reserve it for more than a day so Frank, on trust, reserved it for me each day until I got in this morning to pick it up. Sure enough Frank was true to his word, the camera was perfect...as new, everything was still packaged even the battery had never been used they had a display unit which he kept. Haven't checked the shutter count yet as I have no CF card, ordered but not arrived, drat...
So far I have played a little but only on the internal memory in demo mode, It feels fantastic to handle and much more substantial than the D90 it is quite a lot bigger when compared side by side. Really can't wait to get started with it proper.
Thanks to everyone for their interest and help...mission accomplished.
Cheers.....Kevin

. 20 min later I returned with the display model, I was assured it has never been out of the display(and it looked so) and all the bits and bobs were still untouched. Charging the battery NOW
