Today is a good day...

Picked up my D300 this morning for £880 at Currys in Aintree Liverpool, thanks to a combination of Adamski and davidh6781.

See my original post...

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=171368

I used the "say no to 0870" link provided by Adamski, located a Currys using the local number, quite a few had no interest in helping me! I then called the Church Street branch in Liverpool, spoke with a guy called Dave, very helpful, he confirmed what davidh6781 said and then searched the product data base for me. He located quite a few around the country and one in Aintree! He gave me the direct number for the photographic department were I spoke with Frank who is their main man on cameras.

Now Frank was/is a quite unique character, he loves his job and his cameras! When I first called he explained that the D300 was in his care and although used for display was never handled or messed with, it was only used by serious individuals who had a genuine interest in the camera! I was doing all this from Slovakia while on business, I couldn't pay over the phone and couldn't reserve it for more than a day so Frank, on trust, reserved it for me each day until I got in this morning to pick it up. Sure enough Frank was true to his word, the camera was perfect...as new, everything was still packaged even the battery had never been used they had a display unit which he kept. Haven't checked the shutter count yet as I have no CF card, ordered but not arrived, drat...:(

So far I have played a little but only on the internal memory in demo mode, It feels fantastic to handle and much more substantial than the D90 it is quite a lot bigger when compared side by side. Really can't wait to get started with it proper.

Thanks to everyone for their interest and help...mission accomplished. :D

Cheers.....Kevin

Actually, at that sort of money I wouldn't mind buying a new one and Fleabaying my current one - I'd probably get most of that back

Well done, mine's just over 2 months old and paid just over 1k as i didn't think prices would drop this quick but still well over 1k in adverts in photo mags.
It may have been discontinued but it's still up there !

That's a good price

Now to use it

Glad you got one.

I looked in Curry's Exeter for you yesterday - down here for a few weeks - but the didn't have one.

I love mine.

Hope you enjoy,
Ken

Darn this flippin forum...........

I was diving past Exeter today and thought.......hmmm.......I'll dive into Curry's they'll never have a D300. Any way I dont need one I'm still getting to grips with my D90. Anyway this is sleepy Devon there will be no chance. Oh go on then pop in, go on..........

Spoke to the very nice man (He was human and over 18! Double bonus!!) "Do you have any of the D300's?" Ooooh no we've had a few people ask, we've never had any units here. There's none in the South West I checked the other day. But I'll have another look for you..........

Tappidy tappidy tap...........

Blimey, they've got one at PC World, looks like its a demo unit. "Oh right which PC World?" (thinking ah I need to get to Salisbury, I dont have the time to drive around, it was a silly idea etc etc)..........

"The one next door".....

5 minutes later and I'm walking out with a D300 under my arm. Never been touched by the look of it. They found it in "the cage" (his words) so stuck it out on display.

I reckon I can swap it with my D90 and the wife will never spot the difference  its all just gadget crap to her

DOH!

Right must go and RTFM over dinner!

Barney

Nice one Barney12

I checked the Exeter branch of Currys last week, over the phone, and they confirmed they had none in stock. It is worth checking out PC world as well, I was told the PC World store in Aintree had one in stock as well! Couldn't get in touch by phone to verify anyhow I did the deal with Currys so never checked it out, it was also next door.

Did you pay the same money...£890ish?

Anyhow welcome to the club, I am loving mine...what a difference to the D90 it is a major step up the chain.

Kevin.

£899. Could not get him to budge an inch on the price. Would'nt even throw in a freebee of any sort! Hey I would have been happy with a mouse mat

I'm in a hotel tonight so shooting is a little limited. I've robbed the 16gb CF card out of my car (The command system has a CF slot for music, contact files etc). its a Kingston card but the camera seems not to like it, after a couple of shots in comes up with a card error. I've formatted the card. I'll need to order a couple of cards for it. Lets hope its not a fault with the camera! :shake:

I was quite disapointed with my bartaring performance at the weekend, it now appears I did quite well...£880 is looking good so far.

I am sure it is just the card, I got my Sandisk extreem delivered today popped it in and away we went. I was supposed to be away myself for the next few days, luckily it got cancelled so I can continue to play with my new toy.

Just thinking, a hotel room, a D300, a user manual, peace and quiet...bliss

make the most of it...

I'm well jealous of all you new D300 owners who've had a right bargain. :( I just wish I could afford one....

Go for it...

If you are lucky enough to get one from Currys or PC World it will cost you £900 at most, you have a D200 with accessories to sell and one or two other bits I'm sure! could only cost you £400 at the end of the day...can't say no to that!

If not you still have a top piece of kit in the 200.

Good luck....kevin.

LOL, yes read a great deal of the manual over dinner (table for one please, billy no mates here!) and have been playing a little.

This forum and a D300 is dragging me away from a shed load of work I need to do! So now I'm replying to work emails, watching the news, playing with the D300 and reading this forum. Who said men can't multi-task!!

Barney

chuffed you got one mate. just need to put my own advice in the practice and dib into my pocket lol

Well done Barney.

I checked Curry's in the high street Exeter for Kev last week - down in Devon for a few weeks.

Anyway, welcome to the club.

Ken

Congratulations Barney12, just got myself one at that price, could resist no longer :D

Mine had 18 shutter actuations on it when I checked, but looked pristine and all the bits were stored separately so none of them had been used. I found a 1GB card in it when I got home, an unexpected bonus - card error given by camera and would not format. Deleted all the files on the card using pc then reformatted in camera - seems ok so far but I've ordered a couple of extreme III from Amazon anyway.

I've updated the FW to v1.10 as there were quite a few changes from the original, still reading the manual and experimenting at the moment, but enjoying it so far.

Welcome to the D300 club :)

Barney

Yeh same number for all DSG shops!

Well done on getting one a D300! Aintree was one of the only places when l looked the other day but you beat me too it! ;)

If anyone is interested, manchester white city had one left!!

Been watching this thead with interest :D. Having just sold my Nikon 70-300 VR in the classifieds, I remembered seeing one in Curry's in Doncaster early September while looking for a HD tv for daughters birthday. I casually brought it up in conversation with the BOSS and was told "go have a look" :exit:. 20 min later I returned with the display model, I was assured it has never been out of the display(and it looked so) and all the bits and bobs were still untouched. Charging the battery NOW .

Congratulation to all the new D300 owners plus me!

Oh and thank you Kellie

Scott

God I love this thread...

Everyone is really happy, it's the D300 effect and it's contagious!

Congrats to all the new D300 owners.

Cheers....kevin

Had a word in my local Curry's ten minutes up the road....

They're transferring me one in from another branch.

"That'll be £899.97 please Sir...."

<--Better change this then!

-Rob

ps Incidentally.... Plymouth and Reading were showing stock yesterday....

I managed it with a D90 for a D40

I got home tonight after being away since Mon and had a fit of honesty. The big PC World carrier was also a bit of a giveaway that I'd been trippin out on the toy buying again.

So I stumped up and told the truth, thus I award myslef a big :1st:

She was straight in with the "how much was it" which was swiftly followed by a "HOW MUCH"

but that was an hour ago and I'm forgiven already

Popped into Jessops at Cribs Causeway, Bristol on the way back tonight and picked up a Sandisk III 4gb cf card (£44, OUCH!) and all card errors are gone, so looks like it didn't like the Kingston 16gb card.

Mind you hadn't really factored in upgrading all my SD cards to CF....:bang:

Just downloaded "Opanda" and checked my shutter actuations...

262 is the magic number, I am well pleased with that considering I must have been responsible for well over 100 since I got it on saturday.
