Hello and hope someone can give me a clue...

I've been using CS5 and a Samsung lap top for ages but things seem to have gone wrong recently.

What I usually do is load up my raw files and batch process with some standard settings and then go through each image and correct as required. I used to be able to work on 30, 40 or gosh knows how many images at a time without issue but suddenly my pc started rebooting when working on as few as 6 raws and then 4 and now 1!

What happens is that I can import the pictures and batch process them but when I select the save option things seem to get very slow and then.... reboot!

The task manager shows something like 56% memory used and depending on what's going on anything up to 100% cpu. I thought I might be running out of RAM but now I don't think so. I thought that the spike up to 100% cpu activity may be the problem so I left CS5 alone and instead tried processing a lot of images in Rawshooter Essentials - no problem. I also opened up lots of windows and jobs to get the cpu good and active and even when pretty much glued to 100% cpu use it didn't reboot.

My problems seem to be restricted to processing raw files in CS5 and it's a new problem. I've tried to pin it down to Sony A7, Panasonic or Canon raw files and it makes no difference and whatever I try to process causes my pc to reboot.

I've thought about removing CS5 and reinstalling it but I'm a bit nervous in case I hit problems so I only want to do that as a last resort.

Can anyone give me a clue what might be wrong with my pc?

If so... thanks in advance.
:D

That's a great idea thinks... but where is this? Can't see any "startup and recovery" settings in CS5 or on pc.

Ah, Googled it :D Will take a look thanks.

Is there much dust in the vents? It could be an overheating issue, which would explain it getting progressively worse. When the CPU gets close to maximum temperature, it will clock down to protect itself, then eventually hard shutdown. Other than that bluescreening is a definite possibility.

Thanks chaps.

I'm no further forward.

I downloaded some pc testing software but nothing showed as a fault. I then downloaded a load of Windows updates but again it didn't help and I'm at the same stage.

Basically I can stress my lap top by loading lots of jobs and at worst it just slows down with processor usage at 100% but it still gets the job done but when processing images in CS5 it reboots at some random point which can't be predicted. At its worst I can't even batch process two raws as it'll look like it's going to work but will reboot at some point, possibly towards the end of the process when updating the raw data.

So I'm a bit stumped. Heat doesn't seem to be a factor as I can stress it to hell and it'll still work. The same with ram. I can give it lots to do and at worst it just slows down.

It used to work ok and has only just gone "faulty." I used to be able to load a large number of raws at a time so I can only assume it's one of a few things...

1. It could be a processor/hardware fault that I can't detect and for whatever reason only shows up when running CS5 and processing raws.
2. It could be that the incessant Windows updates have pushed the pc to the limit somehow and the it simply can't run CS5+raws any more.
3. A software fault of some sort.

I'm going on holiday soon so I'll have to leave it for now and I may take it in to a local pc repair shop when I get home as basically I'm stumped.

PS. I have an old lap top with CS2 on it and it'll happily process any number of raws without rebooting. At the moment I have to process raws one at a time which slows things down but at least it works.

How old & what processor is in the laptop? My money would be on heat too - you'd be surprised that 100% CPU doesn't necessarily mean the CPU die is stressed heat wise. If it's a fairly new laptop, the CPU may well be throttling in some cases and rebooting in another.

Download coretemp: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ and see what CPU you have and how hot it is getting.... It might provide a clue as to what is going on.

Odd that it only occurs in CS5 though. And I wouldn't expect batching 2 raw to generate significant enough heat in the CPU. Unless the hsf isn't seated properly but then I'd expect more widespread problems.

When I was setting up my overclock, I got wildly differing temps from the different soak test software. All 100% CPU, just a 10+ degree difference in temps.... Simple enough to try though.... (although I might expect a BSOD first)

I would do a remove and reinstall on CS5, if I were you.

Can't see the heat being a problem on only CS5.

Thanks again.

The pc is two or three years old now.

Reinstalling CS5 could be a good idea but it's the last thing I want to try as it cost a lot of dosh and personally in the past I've found Adobe completely unhelpful if there's a problem so I'm nervous about removing and reinstalling it but I suppose it's an option.

I've tried the temp monitor, thanks, and it's recording hot temps but interestingly I've just done two batches of 20 with no reboots! Which is more than I've managed for weeks.

I'll give it another go this evening but it just seems so random at the moment.

And the fix was...

A good clean!

It was full of fluff and the fan especially was stuffed but after a clean I processed 50 raws and then two more large batches without issue.

It was a strange fault and only showed up when processing raws in CS5. Neither loading up lots of jobs or stressing the pc with downloaded software caused the fault.

At least I don't have to buy another pc :D

Good news Alan...
