Yes
i am planning on getting a nice dell laptop as a christmas prezzie and i have a "illegal" copy of photoshop cs3, but im fed up of feeling like an illegal immigrant (best figure of speech i could come up with) so is it worth also wallking out the shop with a copy of elements in my bag too.

i dont do hardcore 3d graphics design, i do what most of you lot probably do and have basics such as cloning, levels, layer adjustments etc. i would normally be using gimp but becuas emy uncle can get copies that what i end up with however i will never use all the functions of cs3 but will i miss out on them and feel limited in elements 8?

what do you think, i also hear that getting geniune means you can save a fortune of the next upgrade etc. one of the main problems i might encounter is the specifications of cs3 that might put me off and get elements. the laptop i am getting has these specs;

pentium dual core 2.16ghz processor
4gb memory
500gb hard drive

any help will be gratefully appreciated.

I would be very careful of "coughing" to using "illegal" software...............:suspect:

No matter what the differences between CS3 and Elements you should go legal and get a genuine copy of Elements.

I think a lot of people who have CS3 (or now CS4) probably don't use more that 10% - 20% of it's power anyway.

well the thing is i hate having copies really theres nothing wrong as its only for getting another user license but i just hate them, it makes me feel bad as there are people out there who pay good money for cs3 and yet i just borrowed it off my uncle.

anyways i am really tempted to get elements 8 even though its not as good, that way i will feel better and that ive earnt the right for photoshop.

Check that E8 does do layers, earlier versions have not included that functionality.

Layers (as in the layer command) are 'in' elements but hidden, in earlier versions including 2 you needed to buy Hidden Elements to get them to work. I've used both versions 2 and 4 and neither come with a layers command.

No, layers are part and parcel of Elements.

What aren't are layer masks. However, these can be easily added by means of 3rd party add ons.

I've just moved up from Elements 6 to 8 on my Mac. I had layer masks and curves actions under PSE6 via "Grant's Tools" [free] but these didn't work initially so I bought [for $12] Elements+ which adds a lot more besides, including soft-proofing, smart objects and others.

I'm assuming you're getting a Windows machine? Unfortunately the Mac version of PSE8 comes with Bridge CS4, complete with the full version of Adobe Camera Raw, whilst the PC version comes with the usual slightly reduced version of ACR. Not a biggy as I'd always had the lesser version with PSE6, but it's a nice perk of PSE8 on a Mac.

Healing brush and clone stamp are present and correct, layer masks are of course different and are not there by default.

You can fudge it by clipping a layer to adjustment layer and painting on the adjustment layer's mask, but like I wrote earlier, there are several add ons available that will enable layer masks and other extras such as curves, channel mixer etc, etc.
