Cris_L's 52 - Update - Week 23 and 24

Thanks Michael...I think the trainers and watch are a bit standout-ish...might darken them down but then again this is only taken for fun. I want a second flash gun now!

Hi Chris, great pair of shots. Excellent lighting and processing which really suits the subject.

My only minor niggle is the semi eye contact in the first shot. I would prefer either definite eye contact or looking elsewhere.

Great 52  Patrick

That studio looks massive

Quick little buggers aint they..

You did well matey;)

ME:wave:

Cheers, I'll add another one tomorrow, this is underexposed but I found another on the card that s much better..the fire is brighter on the other too.

I use a dish and grid to make the light more directional.

caught up with you again. I really like the last three images. Agree about the trainers being a little bright but i feel the watch she is wearing fits in ok with the lighting of the image.
Top quality images yet again.

The light on this one is superb. How did you get it like that? (I have a Canon 580 EX II and haven't used it much yet)

Here ya go, still not as I want it but the lighting is better. I need to reshoot really with more distance between subject and the fence as i really dont like it being in the image as much as it is. this one hasnt been tidied up as much as the first one.

Hiya Cris,

Just seen your Week 19 photos and wow, they are gorgeous. I would have perhaps preferred a tab more space at the bottom of the first, and as Patrick mentioned, the eye contact, but otherwise skin tone and vibrant colours look spot on to me.

With the second one, another great photo capturing the fab colours. For me there is a bit too much white space to the left. I'm also still trying to decide about the reflections on both. I think the first is a bit too dark and not dark enough on the second

I still have so much to learn about this style of photography, and enjoy looking at your photos as I feel I can learn so much here.

I hope you don't mind me expressing my opinion of the pics (and hope they don't sound negative), I may be totally wrong about them from a technical perspective and only express as I view them. Maybe one day I will be able to spend more time practicing this and capture some stunning photos as you have.

BTW I still prefer the first post of Week 18, it looks a lot warmer and I love the expression. Now that I look at it again and compare it to the 2nd post, it has a bit of a 'Cinderella' feel to it. I think out of all your photos so far .... this one is my favourite ;)

Well done

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi Dawn, No I dont mind you offering an opinion at all, I appreciate it.

In the second image I have added the white space in PP, this is to give a feeling of space for him running around on his bike...perhaps its not worked on this occasion :)

The studio space is fairly small and Charlie was wizzing round on his bike (2nd image), as he was closer to the background lights his reflection has been weakened slightly, I guess I could use the burn tool to darken it down a bit...that might improve the image.

Thanks for taking the time to comment

Hi Cris, really liking your week 19 photos, but I do prefer number 2, I still like number 1, but to me the bike looks a little over sized to me, which I assume is down to the angle you took it at, also there is that rogue piece of hair on the left as we look at it as well. But these aren't major. Love the space on number 2, it works great.

Hi Cris

sorry for not commenting on your thread more but I really struggle with portraits .
Just had a catch up & had to pop in & say I really do like your capture for the Style shot:thumbs:

And love the capture for week 18 , the 1st version really appeals , the shoes don't bother me at all , love the warm feeling you get from it

Thanks Michael. Yes the angle does look a bit odd making the bike look rather over powering really. I wouldnt clone out stray hairs on a 2 year old though....I think kids should look like they do naturally in shots.

Definately need to do more of this stuff, practice makes...

If you like these vote for them in the SOOC competition in the competitions forum!!!

thnks for looking

Hiya Cris,

Two great shots, so difficult to choose between them.

I like #1 because of the pose, hair blowing, lighting and the composition.

#2 is cute, almost pixie-like (in a good way I mean) .... it seems to tell a story. I like how you have captured the detail of the tree rings on the right and the lighting is good too. Find it a very inviting photo, like the little fairy/pixie is sitting on the tree stump, with such a lovely innocent smile .... almost inviting one to come into the light, in the background, and discover more of the wonders of the woodlands.

Well done, I really like these two

I'll have to go and take a look at the SOOC competition you mentioned. Good luck there!

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks Dawn, the first one is probably my favourite ever shot it will be going in the wall in my studio!

Please feel free to look the sooc version...you could even votefor me lol!

It's a tricky one...I believe there are about 4 photographers who's images stand out the most.

Well these are the stand out images for me. When I saw the entries I thought you were odds on to win.

I love the lighting and the vividness of the colours, number 1 is my favourite as well. I prefer the PP on these to the SOC shots, I think it focuses the attention on the subject rather than the background.

Great pics, thanks for sharing. Here's hoping for a late run of votes  (actually scrap that sentiment, I've just seen that we are neck and neck - Don't vote for Cris - Vote for ME )

Thank you for the kind words, I very much like your shots too.

Think onform has got the comp in the bag, fair play is shots are great. I feel good to be in the top few and I hope you do too. :)

I am liking the fact your trying out more lighting Cris.

Week 21 is good BUT !! not sure why it just feels unbalanced to me.....

Dave:wave:

Hiya Cris,

Week 21 is a good photo and admire your experimentation with different lighting effects. I'm not sure whether I like the 'gritty' effect though  I'm not sure if the balance between the shadow on the left in contrast to the light on the right is perhaps what is playing tricks with my eyes, it seems to be distorting the nose. Maybe if it the shadow was lifted a bit  Also a bit more space to the right would work.

A bit of a tiny nit pick is that the horizontals of the brickwork appear slightly out, sorry my OCD kicking in again.

The skin tone looks quite grainy ... not sure if that was your intention.

Week 22 is gorgeous with nice catchlight, although the hair over the eye is slightly distracting. Perhaps lightening the shadow a tab might be better too.

Hope this doesn't sound too critical, I'm just saying it as I see it ... I may be totally wrong here, but always find I learn so much from your photo 52.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks Dawn...now you mentionit I've made her nose look really deformed!

i appreciate your feedback and take it all as constructive o don't worry about offending me!

:-)

Playing a bit of catch up...heres some OCF stuff from the weekend as Rachels wedding where I was a guest...managed to steal the happy couple for a few shots though!

sorry about the crappy watermarks, they are on facebook so I didnt want them without anything on.

Hiya Cris,

Loving your latest pics to your project .... the background colours are just gorgeous and I love how they pop the subjects forward.

Both have a very romantic feel to them ....

Well done
