I was thinking earlier about cover song versions & that there arent many that are better than the original.
Which ones do you all think are the ones where the cover is better than the original:shrug:

The first 2 I can think of are:

Limp Bizkit- behind blue eyes, originally by The Who

Guns N Roses- knocking on heavens door, originally by Bob Dylan

Your turn.

Your song (Elton John) - Ellie Goulding

I'll think of lots me later.

mr bojangles by Robbie Williams

mustang sally by Andrew strong (from the film the commitments)

both superior to the original in my opinion

Arctic Monkeys covering Girls Aloud's Love Machine for Radio1 Live Lounge.

Brilliant

Oo, just remembered one I bought from Amazon the other day

Reel Big Fish cover of Aha's Take on Me

And there's a cover of Adele's Rolling in the Deep by someone but I can't remember who and I can't find it

How about The Commodores/Lionel Richie's 'Easy', covered by Faith No More

When the Levee Breaks - Covered by Led Zepplin, original by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie.

Sunday Morning by Strawberry Switchblade (original by Velvet Underground)
Platinum IV by Mike Oldfield (original by Philip Glass)
It must be love by Madness (Labi Siffre ?)
I can't help falling in love with you by Lick the tins (Elvis Presley)
First we take Manhattan by Jennifer Warnes (Leonard Cohen)
Assasin by Mark Shreeve (original by John Carpenter)

honourable mentions to "Walk on by" by The Stranglers, which is awesome, but not better than Dionne Warwick, and to "Love on a real train" by Tangerine Dream.

Limp Bizkit- behind blue eyes, originally by The Who

seriously? they miss out the best part of the original..

Carter USM did some excellent covers

Neds also did a great version of Saturday Night

The Stranglers Walk on by original by Dionne Warwick

Roll over Beethoven - Electric Light Orchestra
Helter Skelter - Pat Benatar
Wuthering Heights - Pat Benatar

Siouxsie & The Banshees cover of "Wheels on Fire" (Dylan) & "The Passenger" (Iggy Pop)

Placebo's version of Bigmouth Strikes Again (Smiths)

Tori Amos' version of I Don't Like Mondays (Boomtown Rats)

Down With The Sickness (Disturbed) covered by Richard Cheese always makes me chuckle (worth checking out the video for his cover of Radiohead's "Creep")

And though it makes me feel bad to say it, Nine Inch Nails' cover of Dead Souls (Joy Division) is also very good.

Clapton's versions of I Shot The Sheriff (JJ Cale) and Knocking On Heaven's Door (Dylan)

but the best EVER cover version has to be

Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower (originally by Dylan)

Would Keith Richards with Ryan Adams, Willie Nelson and Hank Williams III count for Dead Flowers by the Stones?

Ellie Goulding better than EJ?! Heaven forfend. That version will soon be forgotten it ever existed its so bad. My opinion of course.

Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers - better than Jimmy Youngs version.
I think I prefer Phil Collins' You cant hurry love to Diana Ross's too.

Muse's Feeling Good better than the original possibly.

For some strange reason I've always preferred Blazin' Squad's version of 'Crossroads' to Bone, Thugs and Harmony's original :) ;)

Wonderful World Louis Armstrong redone by the Remones... excellent

Or

Live and Let Die by Paul MacCartney redone by Guns n Roses... more excellence

Creedenece Clearwater Revival - Heard it Through the Grapevine (Better than Smokey Robinson)
Johnny Cash - Hurt (better than Nine Inch Nails)
Grand Funk - Gimme Shelter (better than The Rolling Stones)
Melvins - Green Manalishi... (better than Fleetwood Mac)

can't think of any others at the mo :(

Lacuna Coil - Enjoy the Silence a Depeche Mode cover
Disturbed - Land of Confusion a Genesis cover

Blue Cheer - Summertime Blues (Eddy Cochran cover)
Vanilla Fudge - You keep Me Hanging On (Supremes cover)
White Stripes - I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself (Dusty Springfield cover)
Humble Pie - I Don't Need No Doctor (Ray Charles cover)

Melissa Etheridge - Piece Of My Heart (originally by Erma Franklin)
Jeff Beck & Joss Stone - People Get Ready (by The Impressions)

Blondie's "The Tide is High" beats the Paragons original as does Soft Cell's cover of "Tainted Love" to Gloria Jones version

mustang sally by Andrew strong (from the film the commitments)

Seconded, I love that film!

Also:

Sympathy for the Devil, Guns N Roses version

Not sure it's technically a cover, but MXPX's version of the Scooby Doo theme is pretty cool :naughty:

Less Than Jake's covers of the entire Grease soundtrack..

Rod Stewart doing Tracks of My Tears...

Lucy SIlvas - Nothing Else Matters

Hot Water Music covering Alkaline Trio's Radio (with Matt and Dan from Alkaline Trio on backing vocals) is my all time favourite though, I can play it all day long.

Anther vote for Jimi doing All Along the Watchtower. His live performance of 'Johnny Be Goode' is a tad better than Chuck Berry ever managed too.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Born to Run (don't knock it until you've heard it)

As someone mentioned on Radio 2 yesterday and I have to agree

With a little help from my friends

The Joe Cocker version is far, far better than the Beatles!
