Corky's 52 - WEEK 25 / FREEDOM & RESHOOT

This week I happened to be in a town that had an international 8 day cycle race concluding for that day. Got rid of the jacket and tie, on with the backpack and camera, walked past all the marshals etc and stood with all the pro togs 50m beyond the finishing line.....and then nearly got run over by a couple of hundred mad cyclists doing 50mph, who had no thought for my well being at all :( The speed they arrived really caught me out, that and being dragged out of the way by a fellow "pro tog";)
meant I missed my emotion shot of the winner :(. But, All was not lost, theres always one poor b****r at the back struggling to get across the line, and here he is showing the emotion of coming last or completing 180 kms....whatever!!;)

Ps...I know its soft!!

Emotion.jpg

It is soft but you've still caught a fab expression. I really feel for him - I can se pain in every fibre of his being but determination in his eyes. It's making me want to cheer him on and who cares if he was coming last!

Oh so close to having a fantastic shot...

just a tad more shutter speed and all the from wheel and it would have been a perfect capture...but what a brilliant effort, and it fits the theme so very well. You got to DOF absolutely spot on for me...great stuff...:clap::clap:

Linear: Like 'em both - if I had to choose then the 2nd is more to my taste of the two (lots of lines going on there - very nice indeed )

Emotion - his face says it all - ok a tad soft as you say - but its a capture of a great moment and that, for me, overcomes any technical hitches :)

Very good !!!

I totally agree with this, and as I have never attempted to do this, I am absolutely sure it is better than anything I could have come up with!! well done

Agree with the comments on the wheel and the slight softness but the expression is there in spades, I can almost feel his pain.

What a great shot for the theme, as said it's a little soft, but the expression is priceless, a mix of pain, gutted at coming at the end, and elation at finally getting to the end...

Ohh I know that feeling a mixture of pain and joy that it's all over. I'm no pro, but did do a 100 mile ride last year... can still feel it now!

Yes it's soft, but it still conveys the theme brilliantly!

a miniature Rose, natures complxity

Lovely colours and you've caught the complex nature well Jon. I think I'd have been tempted to try and hold the flower (or rather the other stem) clear of the shot to prevent it interfering with the image. Well done

:agree: and still a little soft for my liking, but that my well have been what you were wanting to achieve...still nice shot all the same...

I'm with John and Marcus on this one Jon - great colours but a tiny bit soft.

Certainly meets the theme perfectly! And I like the oof bg! :)

I've looked at this a couple of times before commenting, because I couldn't quite decide what it it is like about it. :bonk:

The stem on the left is a minor distraction, but the picture as a whole reminds me of a Victorian (?) watercolour painting, with soft velvety colours and the flower caught just as it's starting to fade and shed petals. The oof b/g is perfect for it. The slight softenss in this case 'works' for me and there's enough detail in the petals to show their complexity.:thumbs:

Emotion - it definitely makes you feel for him and that is what emotion in a picture is all about, so for me that more than fulfills the brief :clap:

And we can get to tied up technically with a shot when some of the (IMHO) great photographers of the past, like my favourite, Brassai, would shoot that way deliberately for atmosphere.

Complex - Like Jean, I really like this. The DoF is spot on and it does benefit from not being pinsharp but I would have cropped it from the left and maybe a little from the bottom so that the flower was less central. But definitely meets the theme:thumbs:

Funny that TIME was this weeks theme, as it is something in very short supply at the moment. Not just through work, but my other interests as well. You could say they all came together.....Thats my excuse for being a day late!
My apologies for not commenting on others work....I promise I will catch up this week.

Anyway.....TIME

time.jpg

Well done for gettin your shot in when time is so short. :)

Using just a segment of the clock shows how short of time you were.

This is my sort of clock - the idea of it being, say 3.30ish appeals to me because we spend most of our lives watching the clock and there's something relaxing about not having to keep to strict time. A great choice, nicely executed.

Jean

complex you have lovely colours in that rose and some good detail, shame about the branch on the left hand side.

Time, the clock is great and i really liek the angle you have used.

I love that clock :) 10 past 11ish - we all say it :)

Nice tight crop, interesting time piece and you got it in quicker than mine :)

Nice one!

Complex - I like the colours but it does look a tad soft. I find roses quite difficult flowers as they lack a main focal point for me and can look a bit busy.

Time - well done for getting it in on time and what a lovely clock. I like the angle and that you have the hands in the smiley position - done on purpose?

Of course ;)

Oh boy, What a theme! I have a massive lack of it most of the time, but I started to think where am I most happiest and content. It came down to being on or near the water, so I guess this is my inspiration.

Love the time shot, the clock is an ace subject.

Well, water scares the life out of me Jon, I can see how it can inspire though. The sky is a bit blown but I'm the last guy to give advice on landscapes, I'm hopeless with them.

Catching up here...

Your time shot was very good...I liked the angle and focus...

The Inspiration doesn’t work for me I'm afraid the light meter has been fool in to making it too dark and blowing out the sky. It looks a bit flat and doesn’t have a focus point to look at. But on the positive side this would work better in B&W.

Love the time shot, everything is really good... I'd love a clock like that ;)..

I'm afraid inspiration doesn't work for me either, Marcus has hit it on the head I think, although I'm rubbish at Landscape shots, so can't really offer any useful advice.

Is this any better??? :(

inspiration2.jpg

Thats a much better shot Corky, foreground interest, a stronger focal point and the sky is less blown out.

I believe n-grad filters or blending two exposures is the sometimes the only way to keep all of the scene inside the cameras dynamic range, avoiding blown skys and dark areas elsewhere, like I say though, I'm pretty poor at this sort of thing.

Love the time shot, good composition and DoF and I love the concept behind the clock :) I know it says Cornish Time but it might as well say Spanish Time :D

As for Inspiration I really like the second shot and well done for persevering to get it right. It´s much more interesting and a better composition too, plenty of foreground interest leading to the moored boats :clap::clap:

Hyster and Bruja say it for me, the second shot is much better, for the reasons stated. Well done for going back and getting it :D

Yep the second shot for me too, much better composition and exposure. Love the rose a beautiful interpretation of the theme of complex and the clock shot ain't to shabby either. I'll try and pop by every week in future, not sure how this thread has escaped my notice recently.

Mark:thumbs:

I'm with these guys - 2nd for me for the reasons given!

Lovely scene with that foreground interest nicely framing the bay :) Well done on keeping at it :)

Development. I chose to go the building route with this as Ireland has gone through the boom & bust of the building industry, with our banks having to be bailed out by the Government. Many people blame the Banks and developers for our current economic problems. The photograph shows a gated development that has over 100 apartments and not one tenant.....so much for development!!

9.jpg

I'm not sure on this one. I like the buildings in the backgroud and think it's a good take on the theme. But the bars and darkness in the foreground just seem a but much. Sorry...

no need to be sorry, the foreground is dark because of the entrance buildings overhead. I then added a vignette to emphasise and lead into the building.

See what you mean about the similarity between Ireland and Spain.

I think the bars are a bit overpowering and would have maybe tried a crop so that the left third is gone and up to the bottom of the bush on the right. This would draw the eye in more to the apartments themselves and lessn the impact of the bars whilst still maintaining that locked away, unobtainable feel as that is the strongest part for me.

Good interpretation though  and feel free to ignore my comments :D
