wonderful shot and I have to agree with the others. Well done :thumbs:
 
Great portrait. I love the use of natural light. Sadly it's made for a bit of overexposure on the right of his face, but that's really hard to avoid.
 
I really like that, it's a good portrait. I like your first two themes as well. Although I prefer the colour one for history :D

Great B&W conversion and great lighting making a brilliant portrait of the man :thumbs: I almost feel I know him just by looking at the image :clap:

Did you think about (or infact shoot) putting a little reflected light (using a reflector, white paper etc) on the left side of the face to lift the shadow slightly in the eye and balance up the face. Not sure if it would improve or ruin the shot :shrug: though.
 
Lovely portrait Corky. It's very enjoyable watching your weekly progress. You are putting a lot of effort in and reaping the rewards. It's also good to see your confidence levels building as this is very much a key element as you rightly say. Keep it going.
 
Nice character study. Monochrome suits it too!

Very little inspiration this week....Nay, no bloody inspiration this week!! Anyway, i needed to get a picture in for week 4 and I did a variation on the excellent photograph by DarkStar. Not happy with the picture at all though. tried using 2 flashes at 45 degrees, but could not get the lighting right. Think I need a lightbox??

Good interpretation - that would be a suprise

I can't work out if the angle of the lid is playing trick on my mind or if the tin is not straight. If it isn't then that will help - what is it you don't like about the lighting?
 
I think there are too many harsh shadows round the crispies

I think a light tent/box would help control the lighting Jon - all my foodie stuff is done in the lightbox - the shadows in this case add some depth and define the crispies :D and the light looks evenly balanced overall

Good idea - I had toyed with surprises in cans but went for an easier option so well done on that :D

And where did the fruit go ;)

I know it was a tough week for everyone but you pulled it off nicely..

That's a good Snap: it Crackles with surprise and the colours on the tin Pop.

Lighting this type of shot isn't easy without a light tent. I've tried to use natural light from a window, but if you have to do this in the evening this ain't much of an option in January! The light on the right seems a bit too powerful - could you have just moved it a little further away from the can?

Any way, a good 'Surprise' and you could have joined Dark Star for breakfast - your fruit and cereal and his eggs and beans. :D

I really must start commenting earlier in these threads - I never have anything new to add!

Oh well, I'll just say that I agree that the lighting could be improved but as I struggle with this myself so I feel your pain. I'm also in the market for a light box / cube malarky and also some of these daylight bulbs I keep hearing about - I'm hoping they work as well as people say they do!

Nice idea - even if it was "borrowed" :thumbs:

I had one of flash's about 8 feet away and eventually had about 5 sheets of kitchen paper covering it. BTW, calling it a snap just about sums it up!! :shrug:
 
that works well, the shadows do look a bit harsh, but I can't talk :D :thumbs:

Corky - I'm so sorry. I hope I haven't upset you. :'( I just made the (not very clever) connection between 'crispies' and 'snap, crackle and pop'.

I think you did a really good job and, as I said in my earlier post, lighting ain't easy. You had obviously beaten me to the thought of moving the light further away, so softening it a little was all you could do.

A big part of doing this 52 for me is taking an interest in other 52ers' pictures and thinking about how they arrived at their shot. My comments are in no way a criticism - just me thinking aloud. I look forward to seeing your Week 5.
