Corkys 52 PART 2 --- week 52 - Texture - Thats all folks

Like your friendship :) I agree with cats eye focus comments but it so nearly there :) Great interpretation!

found this very difficult and settled on the "Pont Aven" ferry to France. The ship is passing the Cork harbour town of Cobh (pro Cove) with its magnificent cathedral. I'm sure some of the passengers are making a fresh start!!

Very nicely composed.
I really like the perspective in this - the ferry looks huge compared to the town in the background. Nice contrast between the modern ferry and the old cathedral too.

I think I would have liked the front of the ferry to be in slightly sharper focus, but that's me being picky.
My only real criticism is that it doesn't really say "fresh start" to me. But what sort of a theme was that anyway  ?

Friendship: I love this and don't care about the minute lack of focus. It's such a telling shot - they both look totally relaxed and even puss is unfazed by the camera. Spot on for the theme, and it's interesting how many of us included animals in our Friends shots. Well done on this one.:clap:

Fresh Start: I agree it's not an easy theme, but it's an interesting picture and makes the town look like toytown! What a monster ferry. Yes, of course, there MUST be somebody on there making a Fresh Start, Corky. ;)

Fresh Start : loving the juxtaposition of the modern ferry and the old town - nicely formatted too :)

Doesn't really scream fresh start, but I bet mine doesn't either :d... I see John has been using that long word again :d... and I have to say I agree with him. Well composed shot

I like the juxtathingymabob too.. ;)agree that the ferry could have been a tiny bit sharper but only a minor niggle.

I like the fact that you have cropped it as a pano..makes the ship look huge next to the Island.

Don't you just love the size of these ferry's, this one comes in the Port of Plymouth a lot and I have loads of ferry shots, such a nice looking ship.

I like this mainly because it a much nicer back drop than I ever get taking this sort of shot, and the town doe's look so small next to the ship which I also like...

Fresh start not sure...

Good shot... yes I'm sure...

Sorry Jon, I'm way behind :(

I'm going to do these in reverse order cos I can't keep them all in my head :D

Fresh Start - I love this, the crop is spot on and the hulking ship against the town gives a great sense of scale. Also, I keep going back to look at it as there are so many details in there. And you are right, there's probably a least one person on there heading of to a fresh start

Friendship - What a comforting picture that is, good DoF with just enough detail to make out the person behind the cat. Apart from a tad more focus on the cat's eyesthis is a strong picture.

Respect - definitely shows that and I like that you've kept it in colour as it gives more of a sense of the present and that emphasises the ongoing respect being shown

Grunge - looks grungey enough for me, I wouldn't like to try and walk across it  Spot on with the composition and the juxtaposition of the boats and mud with the boats providing a focal point of colour in the centre of the picture.

Season - your least strong of the five I think as I find the branch in front distracting.

Thanks everybody for the constructive comments. I don't know whats going on with focus as the shots generally are spot on until I load them up to the web and they lose sharpness.....any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

You may have noticed that I'm having to catch up with a lot of peoples threads but I think I owe you the biggest apology - I'm sorry for my appalling lack of comments on your thread!

Night - Having just got back from holiday I'm liking this one (love the use of a drying rack too!). I really like the composition and the only thing bugginh me is the rail bootom right.

Highlight - Great take on the theme and keeps you interested because as you say - a box you can sit in isn't all that commonplace! Great silhoutte as well. I don't know about straightening up the box - something tells me it's going to be a bit skewed from any angle.

Fun - I know how fast the little buggers can be so kudos for getting a "paw on plastic" shot. Love the focus on his face too. BG could be better but it's not a "posed" shot and I appreciate there is only so much control you can have over where a moggie wants to sit!

Easy - Not sure about this one - you've timed it really well but I want the movement to be in the wings only, not blurring the face / beak. Not an easy shot at all though.

Colour - I definately prefer the edit but part of me agrees with John (don't tell him though!) that an abstract of one of the more colourful hulls with a reflection could have been interesting.

Food - I'm going to go against the grain here and say the messed up composition isn't doing it for me - but I do like the idea of partly eated food. I'm wishing the BG was really black as well.

Exposed - I really like the texture of this shot.

Mono - I prefer the B&W treatment and think you have captured a lovely scene.

Season - I don't like the oof branch but I do like the colours. I'm undecided on the central positioning of the tree - on the whole I think you could have got a better shot with different composition.

Grunge - It's definately grungy! I think you have done as well as you could with it but the scene itself isn't all that inspiring.

Respect - I love the fact you have brought colour to a cemetary and that headstone is indeed pristine - fits the theme perfectly. This is probably my favourite shot of yours from part 2.

Friendship - I can only agree with Spartacus - the thinking behind this is great, the compositions and expressions are spot on, but I don't think you have quite nailed the focus.

Fresh Start - Regardless of the theme I really like the sense of scale on this and the composition is great. I'm thinking this has taken the crown from the cemetary shot for me

I'll try to keep up to date from now on!

Love the fresh start photo. Didn't scream out the theme to me but ah, who cares. I love both the perspective and the colours of the houses on the coast. Really well composed, well done!

I'm sure that to most people it is known that the Irish have had a passion for politics for the last 90 odd years ( you only have to look at the North in the last 40 years). Last year the politicans gave us a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. well it appears we got the answer wrong, so they made us vote again last Friday, and lucky for us , the electorate , we got it right this time, otherwise they would have made us vote again!!!. seriously though this last campaign was one of the dirtiest in many a year with both sides of the arguement giving out misleading information. When this theme came up I decided on trying to show the passion contained in an Irish referendum/election.

Let another Irish man be the first to reply! Bloody Irish government. They'd have kept putting up that damn referendum until they got the result THEY wanted.

Love the photo. I think it hits the nail on the head for passion, but maybe that's because I'm Irish! Photography wise, I love the way you got the second lamp post in the distance with 2 more posters on it! Nicely done

I looked at this last night, but it was another one that I wanted to come back to for a second time.

At first glance I thought it was just a few signs at the side of the road, but this is definitely a grower. After reading your words again and looking closer at the shot I can see how much there is to like about it.

First time around I missed the second set of signs just a few yards away . . . I think that just about sums up everything about the passion for politics that you said in your introduction :)

Compositionally it's very good. The line of trees to the side leads your eye nicely to the second lamppost, and dof is spot on too. You can just make out the "yes" and "no" on the signs in the distance.
In fact I can't believe that I didn't see this last night (and I don't even have wine to blame for that) :bang:

It's definitely gone from an "I'm not sure" to an "I like it a lot" overnight.
It's one that you really need to look at, but a very interesting shot that gets the theme across well.

Only one suggestion. I wonder what a B&W conversion with selective colouring on the signs would look like.

I think that's a good take on the theme - despite what you said on my thread, Corky. :bat:

I like the composition, and the second lampost oof, but with clearly visible posters, leads the eye through the image. Nice one :thumbs::thumbs:

Reshoot - Reflections

reflections2.jpg

To be honest, not so sure about water . Suits the theme perfectly, but it doesn't do anything for me, sorry.

On the other hand, the reflections reshoot is very good. Could do with another colour other than green :D but still very good all the same

Passion, nice shot, says a lot!

Water, not keen, the glass looks dirty, and the flash ruins it for me. Sorry.

However, reflections, spot on! Really love this the colours are fabulous, and lush n green!

Water : Love the concept - I suspect there'll be a few more water droplets to come this week.
I'd like a bit more black b/g around the glass though. The droplet at the top is a bit close to the edge of the frame and I'd like to see a bit more room either side of the glass.
Shame that there's so much flare from the flash, for me, it's very, very close to being a damn good shot.

Reshoot : Beautiful landscape . . . something I wasn't brave enough to try again as a reshoot, but I'm keen to give landscapes another go.
I love the clarity of the reflection and the silhouetting of the tree line at the top of the shot adds another dimension

Passion, I like the image, and the composition.

Water, doesn't look too watery to me :D... Looks a little thick. Not sure on this one, it's very close but it's missing something, only I don't know what (sorry that's of no help at all is it ...)

Reflection, ah, that's lovely. It looks a little dark on my screen, but that's probably just my lappy..

But it was green ! ;)

Looking at water I have to agree with you, but think it was condensation on the glass rather than dirt. no excuse for the flash reflections though

Thanks Sarah , comments taken on board

I promise you it was water.! ;) Thanks for the comments

Another brave re-shooter. :)

Water: You've caught the droplet neatly, I like the bubbles in the glass and the way the light is defracted around the sides and bottom of the glass. It's a bit picky to ask what happened to the stem - but it feels like something is missing - and a little bit more space above the droplet would have given it greater impact, imho. I'm still very impressed - it's something I've yet to try. :)

Reflections: It looks a tad dark on my screen as well - but what a reflection. Well spotted. I love the symmetry at work here, and the varying shades of green make it look very calm and relaxing.

Great take on passion

- Water is a great shot with lovely detail
- reflections the picture has a great reflection but imo lacks a focal point.

Passion - There's loads to like about this Jon, not least the idea of we'll keep the buggers voting til we get the answer we want :D. Love the composition and DoF and certainly fits the theme :clap:

Reflection reshoot - what a restful picture although it looks like the riverbank could be a tad straighter but that's just being picky.

Water - fits the theme but the flash reflecting on the glass spoils it for me and it looks a bit cloudy. A nice shiny glass with some ice cubes in would look good though. I must say well done on taking it though as I haven't even attempted something like that before.

Passion... I like this as said before the second lamp post really make this shot for me...:clap::clap:

Water 1...a very well executed shot with lots of movement and action, and as you said Reflections...:clap::clap:

Reshoot again nice, plenty for the eye to wonder over...brilliant...

Out of Context, my offering

I pretty much agree with Bruja - with Passion being my favourite out of the three. I like the take on the theme and think the composition is subtle but well thought out.

Water isn't doing it for me I'm afraid - too many reflections, although the drops look good.

Reflection re-shoot - I think you've got the reflection right but the angle is a tad off.

Out of Context - Well this one made me chuckle! This might sound strange as I know the food is supposed to look a bit rough and ready but the crumbs at the front and to the right are bugging me - I want to brish them away and tidy it up a bit.

:D that's quite funny! I have the same grievances about the crumbs etc, and there seems to be a few things in the top right black area that need to be blacked out. Love the idea though

Very clever and funny Jon  and spot on theme.

This may have been a difficult theme but it has certainly thrown up some very amusing interpretations.
This is another one, a little bit of pp and it would fly...... (sorry couldn't help myself).:bonk:

Another inspired interpretation of the theme and apart from a bit of a tidy up (think Masterchef ) it's well lit and composed and made me smile :D  Jon
