Hello there,

I am thinking about purchasing an SLR in the near-ish future. I have always been a point and shoot man because of the expense involved with SLRs, and was wondering which is the best for an entry level fellow such as myself?

I was looking at the EOS 450D with the extra lens, but I HAVE NO idea if the extra lens is any good, or if this is the best SLR set-up I can get for under a grand.

Any advice? By the way, I am a complete newbie when it comes to photography, so go easy on the jargon.

That seems a reasonable deal. The extra lens is regarded reasonably highly as being quite good for the price it sells for. Just add memory card and a bag and go out shooting.

Secondhand will be another option, but I understand many prefer to buy new.

Welcome to the forum

If you haven't already done so, I would suggest going to camera shop to hold the camera and make sure you like the feel of it, the weight, the balance, layout of controls etc. They can also let you view and try some different lens combinations and offer some advice.

Hi & Welcome

Not sure if you'll still be able to find one, but Comet were doing the 450D with the 18-55 IS lens for £422 - see my thread

Don't forget Canon are offering another £30 cash back aswell - not sure when that ends though - check on Canon's website.

'Kerso' on here sells the 55-250 IS lens - I think the last price list I had from him he quoted around £190 for the lens, send him a PM and ask for his upto price.

Don't forget Camers Price Buster to keep a check on current prices

Hope you enjoy your new purchases

+1 but also try other bodies from other manufacturers like Nikon, Sony etc.
There is very little performance difference between them but they do vary quite a bit in ergonomics & user interface & some will suit you better than others.

Sorry, just seen on another thread the offer code etc is no longer valid and they've increased the price to £499 (5% discount now available - SNOW code) :(

:agree: totally, was out with my father-in-law, trying to convince him to upgrade, he didn't like the feel of the Sony A380 at all, but the Canon 450D he liked and the Sony A500 was much nicer - you need to see which you like

Ask Kerso about the price on the 500D + the 2 lenses Amazon offers.
You might be able to get these for not much more than £700 if you value the extra resolution as well as the Video Capabilities of the 500D over the 450D.

Thanks for all of your replies. I have managed to get my wife interested in getting a new camera now. Hehe. I have my eyes set on a canon. I have always had an infinity for Canons. Our video camera is canon and our point and shoots are canons as well - Except they have died.

I know the body well, as my friend had one in Japan (called the Canon Kiss out there). I found it quite comfortable to carry it around all day snapping photos, and I remember the results being quite fantastic.

I had a wee look around Amazon, but couldn't find this. Is there a huge difference between the two models?

Is the 450D the same as the Rebel XSi?

If you mainly use the camera to shoot people, particularly inside, I would get the body and standard 18-55 lens from a reputable dealer and then get a 35mm fixed from somewhere cheap on the net (should be less than £100). The quality and speed advantage of a fixed lens over standard zoom lenses is huge. I rarely use the zoom lens now.

Difference between the fixed lens and standard zoom lens is? Remember I am somewhat a noobert at all of this. We are used to 4 MP point and shoots. Do you know of any good reputable internet shops where you could recommend a good lens to me?

Thanks for your input by the way. Much appreciated. :)

The Amazon deal seems pretty good. The 18-55 IS lens isn't exactly L glass believe me, I have to sharpen the majority of my pics to properly bring out the crispness in them, but for a start it's good, and then the 55-250 leaves off where it started.

Just a question though, why are you wanting an SLR? Getting an SLR won't automatically make you David Bailey, and if you're used to '4MP point and shoots', perhaps you're in the wrong market? A high end bridge camera might be your best bet, particularly if you're not that bothered about wide angle, faffing about with changing lenses and low light photography.

Don't let certain folk convince you that PnS cameras are crap though. They are suited to the purposes they serve, which is not the same as an SLR.

I never said having an SLR would make me a David Bailey. I am looking to taking up a new hobby. I am not in any market. I am simply looking to learn about the dynamics of photography. I never said I wasn't bothered about Wide-Angle and changing lenses. This is just my starting point. ;)

I love taking photos and wish to take higher quality photos. I also want to take much nicer photos of my son.

I detect an edge on your post so I will say one thing and then sod off.

Getting an SLR camera will not make you take nicer photos of your son.

End.

By nicer, read better quality. And yes it will, as I have played around with this range of camera before. There was no edge to my post mate, but hey ho, all I am looking for is some advice on buying a camera, not second guess my motives, though I can see how it may have come across from the posts above.

Anyway, back on topic:

I have been looking at all the different lenses, and I have to say that it is fascinating. I think Fish eye lenses look loads of fun.
