Compact Dilemma

Hi all,

Heading off to Thailand on holiday at the end of the year (woo hoo ) and have decided that I am not going to lug the DSLR around. So, I am in the market for a “compact”. I do not want to go down the CSC route as that would be too much of a duplication of the DSLR functionality and a bit pricey.

So I have narrowed things down a bit but now the dilemma…

I don’t know whether to go for one of the waterproof offerings like the Lumix DMC-FT3 which would give me a small, light camera to take on the beach, go snorkelling with and not worry about but, as far as I know, will not give me RAW capability or a fast lens. The alternative is something like the Nikon P7100, the Lumix DMC LX7 and their ilk and a “dry bag” type case like the ones from Over-Board or DiCAPac.

Anyone used any of these cases and which, if any, are any good?

I know I have a few months to make up my mind but I am really torn and just cannot decide which route to go down.

Any suggestions or advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Wouldn't be a dilemma for me there is only one true king of compacts and that's the sony rx100 which blows everything else out of the water, nothing comes close to its sensor performance which out performs the 1st gen m43 sensors. Might be a little pricey but kersa a forum regular has a online shop selling them £450. This really is a one horse race until other brands bring out there larger sensor compacts.

heard great things about the sony too
not normally a massive fan but the sample quality is great

I like my lumix LX5, worth a go 2nd hand, or the canon s95 and successor.
the upmarket compacts are worth it I think. with portraits and flash work I think you can definitely tell the difference between them and a standard compact.

Hmm, the Sony is interesting and it looks drop dead gorgeous. If I can find a reliable but affordable waterproof case :help: it might be a winner.

What about an Olympus XZ-1 and it's dedicated oly waterproof case. Be able to pick the pair up new for less than cost of rx100.

I dont have the waterproof case but find the oly a great carry camera and it goes with me everywhere- there's some good value alt supplier batteries and it shoots raw and jpeg.
