Please bear with me on this......it might take a bit of explaining :)

Sunday I posted a photo here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/light-trails-reflection-and-a-radio-mast.516680/ and jamiewednesday kindly offered to clone out some distracting lights on the right side of the picture, which I was quite happy about.

When he reposted his edited version the sky looked totally different, nothing like as yellow/orange . I commented on this and to my surprise and confusion no one else could see a difference. Apparently both photos looked the same.

So, to try prove a little sanity on my part, I took a photo of my laptop screen (I know not the best, but it was all I could think of)..... this is what it showed

You can clearly see the sky in mines a yellow/orange colour, in the copy jamie did it isn't :thinking:.

This morning I've been looking at the few photos I have on flickr on another lap top, to my surprise none of the photos look like they do on my laptop :bang:

It appears colours look a lot brighter with more colour on my laptop, so when I'm editing I'm not getting the same finished version as everyone else sees :(

So.......to the question, what can I do to correct this, if anything, bearing in mind its only a cheap laptop to start off with, thanks :)

P.S if this should have been posted here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/computers-websites-and-other-technology.60/ could a staff member please move it :)

What happens if you lay out the windows the other way up (copy on top, original below)?
What happens if you lay them out side by side?

I can't help wondering whether what you're seeing is an artefact of your laptop's display, and/or the angle at which you're looking at it.

(I looked at the original thread and both images look the same to me.)

I just looked at the originals on my uncalibrated screen! The colours of the sky change, get more saturated, the higher up the screen they are. This applies to both the original and the edited version. If I view them at the same screen position they look the same.

that's an issue with your screen (my work computer is the same) - anything in the bottom half is flat and dull.

Swap the two images over and I bet that the original looks washed out compared to the edit

Just looked at the original thread, with both side by side and they look the same on the unclibrated monitor using IE8.

Its exactly the same, if I view the photo through flickr on my laptop it looks the same colour as the top of the two images photographed together.

View it through flickr on my wife's laptop, screen at same angle, the photo has the same colours of the bottom image.

It seems to be something on my laptop that's making the colour a lot brighter during editing (view NX2) but appearing duller on everyone else's laptop/monitor

Would it help if I sat the two laptops next to each other, both showing the same page on flickr and took a photo of that

As above.....swapping them over they still look the same

wierd - they do look the same to me.... even opening them both in a new tab, and then flicking between - the only difference is the cloned bits.

maybe something to do with the colourspace they are saved in

above is just the simple information Picasa shows for each image.

Are you shooting raw?
View NX2 will apply all the camera settings to a raw file, including brightness, saturation, contrast etc. Other programs will just apply their best guesses / standard settings.

Here is a photo of my laptop on the left, mi wife's on the right, showing the picture on flickr

Both plugged in to the mains, both screens sat at same angle

I'm guessing that everyone's viewing the photo like the right laptop.......where as I'm viewing the photo as on the left......apart from when jamiewednesday reposted it.......it looked like the one on the right

I said this would take some explaining

Kev, I am shooting raw.....but does that explain why the photo looks ok to everyone else?

Looking at the original pics, original and edited, I don't see much difference on my monitor (40" Samsung LED HD TV), in fact they both look quite similar, more like the ones on your laptop and not like your wife's one.

One reason why I don't use any laptop for editing pics.

Cheers Mark, I'll go have a read and report back.......I hope its not complicated :D

2 commands

open a new tab and type "about:config" (not in quotes)

then in the search box type "gfx.color" (not in quotes)

and look for the string "gfx.color.management.mode" - i'm betting yours is set as 0...

change it to 2 close firefox and reload and try it again ;)

Mark, thank you for the very easy to follow instructions:).................I thought you'd hit the nail on the head........but it was already set to 2..........any other ideas :D

So can anybody explain what the issue actually was, and why it was apparently specific to Firefox?

it's the colourspace - Firefox is a colour managed browser...

have a look on here for a few more details

setting it to 1 made it better.....so I've set it to 0 and its cured it

Thank you :notworthy:

I've been looking at it again and it's a better colour match set at 1 when I do the test in the link.....again, thank you Mark :)
