OT – but only just. Mods, if there is a better forum for this please feel free to move it.

I have, or rather my father has, a pile of 8mm (standard 8) cine films dating from about 40 years ago. We would like to get these copied to DVD and are aware that while this perhaps could be done at home with a projector and digital video camera far better results are achievable by using dedicated professional equipment.

Does anyone have any experience of this and if so can anyone recommend a company that could do it for us. I guess that there is probably two to three hours worth in total.

Many thanks,

Andrew

I can't recommend anyone, (too young ;)) but a quick google has presented loads of possibles:

Sorry can't be of more help

Thanks,

I think I have seen most of those. But, I am going to have to send irreplaceable originals to them so it would be nice to deal with someone who others have had a positive experience with.

At least with 35mm slides I can scan them first before sending off so I have some form of backup.

You are right, I guess there are professional methods of accomplishing this, but I'd also think they were very expensive too!

If you are wanting this level of service and professional approach then of course it's your call, but I am also certain that as you seem to be worried about sending the irreplaceable originals off to a company then you could consider doing a set of backups yourself.

If you set up your cine camera and projector, with a digital video recorder as you suggest - then record them with the digital recorder as they are being played by the cine projector - then I am sure you will have as good a quality backup, but this time in electronic format that can be easily put on a computer and kept forever. At least this way should anything happen to your valued originals, then you'd have made backups albeit in a different format.

to be honest, i don't think you will get the answer you are hoping for i'm afraid.

Telecine machines are very expensive, although there are companies that can do it for you (might be your cheapest route i'm afraid). Google "diy telecine" or "home telecine" as there seems to be a few examples of diy machines.

Hope you can find a solution!
