Hi. I'm a newbie and this is my first post, so I'm hoping I'm posing this question in the right place...

At the moment, I'm doing all my post-processing on a pretty cr*p laptop and am looking to buy a new desktop to make this job a bit more easy. I'm not a professional togger, just doing it for fun, but also want a screen I can callobrate properly and a reasonably fast processor to make the photoshopping a bit quicker and less painful.

Any hints for what to look out for on new computer - someone told me the graphics card is important if you are using photoshop, for example? I've been looking at this one :

Dell desktop

I don't have a huge budget for this so am not looking at something top of the range. Just really after ideas for the minimum I should be looking for given that I take and pp photos every day of the week. any advice gratefully received!

fo what its worth I am selling a computer that may be of interest to you. It is in the for sale forum here and on ebay.

It is a bloody good bit of kit that does all you want it to do, and looks good too!

Give me a shout if your interested.

Thanks, but I should probably have mentioned that I'm living in Oz at the moment, so fear the postage may make it too expensive for me!:bonk:

haha now thats a good point well put...teach me to pay more attention!

You want one with a dedicated graphics card, not a intergrated one. If you look at the dell you posted, you can see the 2 cheaper ones have intergrated cards, whereas the expensive version has a proper 256mb card, which is what you want. I'd avoid intergrated graphics cards at all costs IMHO.

how much you want to spend on the whole system...i assume u need a monitor as well?

Looking to spend anything up to £1000, so the most expensive of the Dell ones I linked to would be within my price range.

Round our way we say either build your own or buy a Dell. I have had 4 Dells in the past and they have all been good reliable PC's. Make sure you get one that you can upgrade as the cheap ones used not to be upgradable. Check that you can pop in a graphics card if you think you need one later.

Or buy a Mac :D I think the price of Macs in Oz is much higher than in the UK for the same thing.

Just get the best Dell you can afford!

Thanks, Andy. Think I will go for the most expensive one of the 3 as it has the separate graphics card. and anything has to be better than my terrible lenovo laptop I'm using at the moment!

i would personally build my own, but i know this can be a daunting task for someone who is just an end user, i would in that case definately stick with dell, if your not so worried about running big multiple programs i would save some money on the processor and put it into extra RAM and a better graphics card,

also the Dell monitors are amazing, i have two 20" ultrsharps at work, brilliant monitors =D
