"More Trouble Than Its Worth??"

Tonights picture caused a bit of trouble at Gymnastics tonight. I positioned myself so that i was 'concentrated' on Caitlin (hard not to get other kids in frame, but they'd be cropped out later anyway). I had the permission of the Gym Coach as i have had in the past, and one parent came up to me and demanded to know why i was taking pictures of kids as i needed written permission of the other parents! I corrected her but she insisted she knew best as she was a 'police officer'. At that point i advised her that she should know the law regarding the taking of photographs. She insisted that she knew the law and could have me arrested - "bring it on" was the reply!, and i even offered to ring them for her and asked her for her badge number (which she would not give!) and i kept on snapping Caitlin doing cartwheels.

"You cant take pictures of my daughter" she said. I told her i wasn't and said that even if she was 'in frame' it was not AGAINST THE LAW. At that point another parent came over ranting that she didn't want pictures taking of her daughter either. "Good, because i'm not taking any of her!" I also told her that i can go to the park and take pictures of my kids playing there if i wanted, and if her child was there so be it. "No you cant - I can have you arrested" (can you see a pattern emerging here??)

The gym coach then came over and asked me to stop - not because he thought i needed to, but because of the grief it was causing. I stopped as i had got the shot i wanted.

On the way out the 'discussion' continued and once again i was reminded that i could be arrested and be 'locked up' LOL. Again i offered to call the police so that she could be corrected.

"They'll make you delete the images" She said! "Really?" i replied - "i thought that was against the law in case they were needed as evidence should i be arrested". I asked her which law i was breaking, to which she called me a "prat" and stormed off with the other parent.

I passed them in the car-park (i was the last to leave as i stayed behind to apologise to the coach for causing him grief), and could here them talking about it, and once i had passed them, two of the parents marched back into the gym for round two!

I kept my cool, but was RAGING inside!!!.

I NEED A BEER!!

Yeah, i've seen that one before. A bit worrying these days, and everytime i end up in a situation like this it makes me question if it really is worth the hassle.

I'm fully expecting some serious grief next week and for their husbands to be along for the ride as well!

ahh yeah, next week, hope it's not that bad, but regardless of the law it's all been messed up for you, shame :(

Well, hopefully she'll have gone off on one at work about it and someone will have corrected her before then ;)

Go to the police now Chris and make a complaint against the two pathetic women. At least inform the that you intend to exercise your right to photo Caitlin at the gym next week, and that you are expecting trouble off them.

Idiots.... grrrrr....

Not a bad idea john, but i have no idea of their names  a quick email to the coach should short that though.

Well email has been sent to the coach and i have the parents names, so next stop is the police in the morning.

I'm going to let them know the there may be 'trouble' next week and just keeping them informed in case it does kick off.

I am 100% convinced you are doing the right thing here Chris. It is an absolute disgrace that you were asked to stop taking pics and nothing was said to those idiotic women. I sincerely wish you all the best next week, and only hope you get sense out of the police.

PS: you ought to mention to the police that one of the women said she was a police officer but refused to give you her badge number. If it turns out that she is... then she may be in for some trouble... if she isn't then again she may be in for some trouble.

Please do keep us updated.

That's one of the reasons for getting the names of the ill-informed parents, so that i can let the police know that one of them was claiming to be a PO ;)

Anyway - no one has commented on the picture, considering the trouble i had getting it........

 :D

Yes, you're right Chris... though this particular digression really infuriated me, I will say that once again you've caught Caitlin wonderfully. She obviously enjoys Gymnastics, you captured that easily.

Is Rebbecca feeling left out...?:shrug::lol:

 :D

Nice composition, like the subtle vignette and good moment to capture as she's about to hurl herself about:D Shame the messy buggers mucked up your BG

I'm just waiting for a situation like this to crop up with me, shame they had to do it with other families about.

I'm liking this capture. I find it pretty hard to freeze anything like that in our gyms at school due to poor quality lighting. Did you use any flashes or anything to freeze this, or was there enough natural light coming in?

Shame you had a bunch of muppets trying to spoil it for you. Let us know the outcome from the police, it'll be interesting. :)

Thanks :)

Exif from the shot shows ISO 200 / 1/200'th / 50mm / F1.6

I'll keep the thread updated with the outcome :)

Thanks cyclone.

Yeah its a pity that it had to happen in front of the kids (and other parents), but for me to back down just because she says she was a P.O would have been like an admission of guilt (in my eyes) so i made a dignified stand and carried on snapping :D

Roll on next friday :bat:

That sort of thing really annoys me....:bang::bang::bang:

Fair play for standing your ground, I would have tried, but ended up backing down. I'm not exactly 100% on what the law actually is.

"I'll Raise you one CurlyWurly (AKA Pokerface)"

This is a shot i've had in mind for a few weeks, but never had the time to set it up (In reality it took all of 10 mins to get the positioning / exposure how i wanted it as i was using natural light - got a bit of a no flash phase going on at the moment!)

I used the sweets as 'currency' as I didn't want it to appear that the kids were gambling and wanted to inject a bit of fun into the shot, i hope it worked :)

Nice pic, shame about the trouble to get it!

Never had this problem myself yet but i think its def something that will end up getting worse not better!

Thanks Lisa. It is sad that we are surrounded by paranoid parents, who judge everybody by their own paranoid standards :(

Thanks JD, I'm not 100% either but i am reasonably confident of the basics thanks to the WWW. A couple of links i use are....

and

Always have a copy of 5 in my bag to hand out to parents should i be questioned ;)

What.... just the one CurlyWurly - with a hand like that... bejeysus I'd be raising her by the entire global stock of Cadbury's if it were me!! :)

Oh, and the shot... one of your very best there Chris. Exceptional image. Looks like you're back with the D700 eh!

Thanks John, I'm really happy with the way the shot turned out (so much so that i'll be posting a seperate thread in GPS shortly). And yup i'm back with the D700. The D3 was just too cumbersome and was making me miss some shots so sold it on at a profit, and bought a (another) D700. It fits so well and gives me the freedom i need.

Just going back to your 'problem shot', i wonder if it was a woman taking the pics would they have been different?

I did have that thought, or if i was using a mobile phone to take them.

People tend not to give a second thought to mobile phones taking pictures, but to me a camera is a camera and if my intentions were anything sinister, surely using a mobile phone would mean i could distribute said material easier as it could be sent direct from the device

"Wish Me Luck!"

Rebecca was in another Gala today (sunday) with Stalybridge Swimming Club. She competed in 100m Freestyle.

Even though she didn't win she managed to knock over 6 seconds off her personal best time and finished in a time of 1 Minute 32 Seconds.
