Hi Admin ... just wondered as some of us get nattering on threads and take them offtopic sometimes, as to whether a chatroom has ever been considered for the site. Dont know how feasible this sort of thing is so dont bite my head off if it would inccur massive expense/time/knowhow.
Just thinking out loud really! ;)

You could use MSN :)

We did consider an IRC channel last year but decided against it for a number of reasons. What those reasons were I have no idea, I've slept loads of times since then...lol

I'll try and dig up the thread for you.

As always, even if something has been decided against in the past, it's always open to future discussion, so we never say never. We're always open to discussion about site improvements. So don't worry chuck...no one will be biting your head off...and if they do...you just come see me and I'll sort em out for you :)

silly idea.......it'll never catch on

/wanders off shaking head

I can lace his brew with anything you request Glo, next time he pops round.

You just have to give the nod and you can consider him laced...mwahahah

Rather thought that was his permanent state ... :naughty:

I have been known to be wrong in the past though ... :D

I've got that book , mine is the St Amanda edition :'( .

She once claimed that my arse was that smart she didn't know why it hadn't left me

Another forum I frequent recently added a chatroom facility. Not long after a bunch of dodgy romanian hacked the site through the chatroom and it was plauged with advertising bugs so it was shut down. They thought it was fixed, it got hacked again and this time the hosts shut the site down without warning and deleted the whole thing. The admins only had a back up from 2 weeks previous though so it's taken another couple of weeks to rebuild the site elsewhere.

Because of this experience I'd rather live without a chat room than risk having TPF offline for long periods of time.

Which is why I suggested an IRC channel, no need to add anything to TP just use an IRC server out there somewhere, plenty around.

I like the current format where I can add my inflammatory remarks, step away from the computer to do some work then return with a smile on my face to see who has taken the bait! :D

What?!

:p

:agree: ... novelty value only ... except perhaps for a few diehards maybe ...

IMO ... only of course ... :D

:p

But no one would force you to use it :)

I just think that it would cut down on the frequent threads that wander off topic with jokes and digs etc., I have to admit I sometime stop reading threads when they wander and a lot of threads seem to do that nowadays.

I think for that we need more smiles available. Like this:

I bet some of you would like this one for some of my posts:

Prefer forums personally, means any comments are available for everyone to follow. Also remember alot of the members on this board may only visit a few times a week, or once a day - so a live feed is going to mean they will miss out on alot of whats going on.

Another problem I've seen with many chatrooms is they quickly fall into general discussion and often end in the usual insults and bad feeling.

At the moment I dont see anything wrong with the current system - either through fault or lack of features so personally I wouldnt see the benefit of a chatroom feature, doesnt mean I would never use it if one was introduced though :geek:

All just my opinion so :p ;)

Oh! I sooo agree!
I enjoy the bit of banter between some of the peeps Ive become friendly with as well as reading likewise from others.
Its just now & then, like last night when I started this thread, I do wonder if some peeps tire of that or are peed off if a thread they start meanders off topic.
However, Id hate to risk TPF falling foul of hackers & suchlike (sorry Hacker, lol!) just for the sake of a chatroom. I remember when it went down earlier this year when some issues had to be sorted, I was lost ... I had to use ...other sites! :gag:
I guess MSN & PMs are the better option for now.

 What was that about other sites!!! :shake:
Wash your keyboard down with warm soapy water :bat:

Coffee, along with Marmite is not permitted within close proximity of my person :D

;)

I definately vote for the "non-interactive" approach.
The lag between posting and response is not a problem for me. Infact it's probably a bonus.

Being able to read peoples responses over time is a winner for me.

I agree......only tried one of theose "live" chat rooms once and found them really hard going........felt like I was gatecrashing a party. Much prefer this kind of format as I can only drop in at odd times. I like being able to read old threads, to "catchup". :)

But the two forms are not mutually exclusive no one is suggesting that the forums are replaced by a chat room/irc channel, it would be like a big MSN conversation.

So do none of you guys have MSN conversations with others from TP ? Personally I don't see the difference.

Not often, as in maybe a few times. But if I did have a need for a real time conversation/discussion I would probably just use MSN, or ICQ, or etc.

oooh, what server ? I was thinking on EFnet on demon's servers

just any quakenet server mate will get you straight in, quakenet is the more popular of the irc networks these days, its where all the gamers hang out ;)

try blueyonder.uk.quakenet.org or random quakenet server.
