Stole this from another forum - it was made by REG that pop in here occasionally.

First there are a number of different programs that will let you access the IRC chatrooms, I personally use Opera, its a nifty web-browser jobby that will let you access IRC chats too

you can download the latest version v9.02 from here: http://www.opera.com/download/get.pl?id=28418

For the sake of this ill assume you know how to install programs onto your pc so ill jump to the part where you have run opera for the first time.
To access the chat rooms click on tools then mail and chat accounts

Press next and it will ask you if you want to create an account, press yes again.

From the list select 'Chat (IRC)'

Insert your name and email address (dont copy mine )

Choose a chat nickname (you can change it later so dont worry about it)

The next step asks you to choose the chat server, ours is not in the list so just delete whichever is in the box and type in 'irc.quakenet.org'

Once you select finish the following image is displayed

Click on join and in the room name put #froody-cs

Hopefully you should then appear in the room somewhere under your selected nick goodluck, see ya there

Here is how to set it up, first change your nickname

then in the little text box type /attach quakenet

then when it has finished connecting type /join talkphotography

That's it !

If you have the required app then its #talkphotography on Quakenet. That link should work, at least it does on Windows. It doesn't quite work on OSX.

Windows Clients:

mIRC which is made better with No Name Script
Trillian (Does MSN/ICQ/AIM/IRC/ETC)
Miranda IM (Like Trillian)

OSX Clients:

XChat Aqua (mIRC for OSX)
Colloquy (Very nice friendly easy to use client)

Universal:

Chatzilla for Firefox
Opera

hmm - make sure you have everything spelt right. Opera has done this to me before. The next time I tried it joined instantly It can be a bit of an arse!

I can't see it being an issue. On another, larger forum I'm on there is an IRC channel thats always active and I don't think its ever been an issue. People will continue to read and chat on the forums just as they will on IRC. IRC is just a quicker way for a quick natter. I don't think it'll take anything away from what's here. For one, people will still need a place to host and display their pics. Threads last longer than IRC chats too, as in they can stick around for months.

Are you using a firewall? will Opera open a general website? Which version of Opera are you using? What is answer the life the universe and everything?

One thing to be wary of, is people signing in under another persons forum name. As we grow, we're going to eventually be the target of trolls.....so it's just something to be mindful of if you're chatting on there, revealing secrets to someone who isnt who you think they are....or something like that...lol

That *can* be an issue but I think we'd be fine. As a community we don't have a lot of enemies or a huge amount of hatred from banned members. I'm an Op on another channel that does have a book load of hatred from banned members and other such people and its maybe once every 6 months that someone will stop by and say something. With a good bunch of ops around they don't last 5 mins. Oh btw I'm cyk on there
