For the rest if your life Jonathan....for the rest of your life.

Again like dogs it depends how they were bought up.I have to admit, I've had as nasty injury from a car as I have a dog! Cats are in general more nasty, but more affectionate, when they want to be.

My boys will let you do anything to them. The only injuries they've dished our are a result of a hand being within a playing radius
One of our family cats went through a stage of attacking legs but it turned out he was riddled with cancer and in hind site would have been in great discomfort.
The oh used to house share with a guy who had a cat that hissed and swiped at everyone but it's owner but she was a rescue.

Agreed, once the "damage" (maybe not the right word) is done its hard to undo. Many years ago I took in a cat when she was 5 years old. She had lived with a single guy, who happily admitted she spent most of her time locked in his bachelor pad whilst he was out working/partying so didn't like humans much... or other cats... or frankly anything that moved really. He wasn't wrong, the poor cat from 8 weeks old just simply hadn't had any proper interaction with anything - she would come and sit on your knee and then try and take a lump out of your hand whilst still purring like a traction engine. She lived until she was 20, and was always a cussed mare, but did improve from her original form, finally finding tolerance of humans and other cats as long as they didn't pester her too much. She would still occasionally try for your hand, but as long as you knew it might happen and were prepared to let it [as opposed to pulling away and triggering the fight/kill instinct which could indeed result in a bloody mess] she never actually injured, just sort of held onto your hand for a few moments. She was never a problem with strangers because she would simply avoid them and the odd few she did take in interest in were warned and if they were uncomfortable with it, she would be locked out of the room. A dog like this may have been able to have been retrained, but even with a lot of work, its far less easy to do with a cat and many wouldn't have taken her on, I doubt in fact she would have made it out of a rescue centre. She had real teddy bear looks and grizzly bear temperment and know it sounds silly about a cat, but I am glad I gave her a chance, because I do actually believe she did learn to enjoy life in as much as a cat can be aware of doing so.
As for all the others we have now, not a nasty bone amongst them, although I can confirm, hands being in playing vicinity of maine coon sized claws can result in some pretty dramatic scrapes![]()

In hind site we're suspect as to exactly what, if any, human interaction Floyd (our suspect % MC) had. When we bought him home he was absolutely terrified and we couldn't do much at all without him getting scared and hissing at us and/or Hugo. Fortunately he was never violent and eventually he came around to us as he was only a kitten. But he still can't cope with strangers at all and he's 10 months now. The MIL came down last weekend and he spent 95% of it hiding in our bedroom.
What's my point.. Oh yes.. With most animals there are often reasons behind the psychological issues.

We dont need to stop at cats either. I got an extremely evil look from a magpie whilst out walking the dog this morning...
KITTEH POWER!
Seen tones of videos of magpies attacking cyclists lol.
Persistent little t**ts
I am concerned about any dog I can't throw like an American football when they are near my children. Everyone has rights and I think a number of dog owners who are around dogs all the time simply do not understand how a dog running towards you or your child makes you feel. You have a right to walk your dog, but everyone has a right not to be scared.
They make me feel that I must be next to my daughter at a park and not let her explore on her own.
You will all come back and say they are as soft as pillows etc. etc. etc. etc. but when one of my daughters get spooked and gets upset when a "harmless dog" comes up to her, how is it harmless if it has given her that reaction? That is like saying there is no harm in emotional bullying as there is no physical contact and no anger. What about when on 1 or 2 occasions when I have been a little further from my daughter and she has been so spooked that she has run to me causing the dog to chase and jump up etc.
Whenever I see someone ask a dog owner to keep their dog under control, they are always met with abuse. This is not just the stereotypical vest, can of lager and bulldog brigade but middle aged women in those green waxy country jackets, families with dogs etc. There have been quite a few incidents in our local park that we have a dog warden who patrols the park.
I went down to Sandbanks, Poole and we were sitting on the beach having a picnic in the no dog zone and 3 dogs came up to try and take our lunch resulting in owners having to run across the beach. There were also some large huskies running around off the lead and when someone reminded the owner the dogs should be on a lead, they were met with a mouthful of abuse from both the mum and dad of the family.
On the flipside my girls have stroked some lovely dogs, but these are generally yorkshire terrier size.
My daughters know to ask us and the owner before going towards a dog and always do. They also know to stand still when a dog is near them and we have to work hard to ensure they remember. Yet they still get spooked by larger dogs (any breed).
Why does someone else having a dog have such an effect on my family?
and I could equally say why should someone elses children have an effect on my dog owning.
As with Ruth I had the neighbors from hell where I lived, some would call the dogs over to the fence and poke sticks into them
luckily the dogs were fairly intelligent and learnt to ignore him, at which stage all sorts of things came flying
over the hedge, after a polite request to stop him was ignored, everything was put out for collection on bin day
if they failed to reclaim it tough.
Also when out the amount of children that do just come running up to dogs, once again not a problem but#if something
had happened we all know who would have been at fault especially as one was a very large GSD, who incidently happened
to be the favourite with said kids
Gun ownership was banned due to bam pot gun owners shooting at children in schools.
Why cannot dangerous dogs be banned, just how many children and adults are to be mauled before these beasts are gone.
X2. Dogs and their by extension their owners, are with very few exceptions a complete menace. I'd personally love to see all dog ownership outlawed bar for working dogs on farms. I hate the things, I hate the mess they leave on the street, I hate them coming up to me with the owner saying "oh its ok it won't bite" but they scare me silly.
It still winds me up when I see comments like this, that have obviously come from those that are completely uneducated when it comes to dogs.
All dogs have the potential to be dangerous/cause harm to people, if not trained/disciplined as they should be. I guess its easy to say that it is all down to the dog, and nothing to do with the idiot owners that are not fit to own a dog.
Yeah, so lets ban Therapy dogs, hearing dogs, dogs for the blind etc...
You hate dogs, and you are scared of them...we get it. So because you are scared all dog ownership should be outlawed? Get a grip.
Guns don't kill people, people do.
Didn't stop the powers that be rid ban lawful people from owning guns.
I am for one sick and tired of dog walkers, dog mess, these awful things running around the countryside and the things coming up to me. I don't like them, I don't want them in my country. I'd love to see them banned and removed from circulation.
So you are sick and tired of dog walkers? Does that mean you want people banned as well? There are some extremely responsible dog owners out there, who pick up their dogs mess, and have trained them well enough to not run up to random paranoid people in parks etc
Can someone please explain why they need to own a dog capable of tearing a human being apart?
Can you explain why dog owners need to explain themselves to paranoid dog haters?
Can you explain why you need to answer a question with a question? Answer it please, without rhetoric and sarcasm.
And I am not paranoid, just experience of dogs coming up to me with a suitably insouciant owner. Leads and muzzles please.
Interesting, our neighbour has one and he is always acting aggressively and a couple of times he has got into our garden and you daren't go out.
The neighbour obviously realised the problem and put up a higher fence but if the dog is out in his garden and anyone goes into our garden he's at the fence snarling and barking like mad - we never let our grand-kids out in the garden if he's out in his!
People make better companions. I pity those who relate to dogs/cats better than people.
Totally aside from this polarising view from yours a snarling dog bred to maim and kill cannot be likened to a camera. I'm worried just how rose tinted the specs are of dog owners who own killer animals don't see that what they have is potentially very dangerous and is not for the good oh humanity at all.
My 24-70 is heavy and dangerous if I choose it to be. Only a fool with a dog would say they have complete control of their dogs actions. They are animals and are unpredictable.
So I ask again. Why does anyone need to own a dog, which they cannot fully account nor control for, that can maim someone limb by limb. What's wrong with a small less harmful dog?
Oh, and you have responded about the Therapy dogs, hearing dogs and dogs for the blind. Should they be banned? Lets face it, you never really see at Jack Russell (or other small breed) as a guide dog do you?
Cant remember the year off of the top of my head, but PAT Dog (Pets As Therapy Dog) of the year one year was a Rottweiler. I guess it had been trained properly by a responsible owner or something eh?
Can you explain why you need to answer a question with a question? Answer it please, without rhetoric and sarcasm.
And I am not paranoid, just experience of dogs coming up to me with a suitably insouciant owner. Leads and muzzles please.
Muzzles? For every dog?
Guide dogs are a necessary evil. Soon we will have tech that renders them obsolete.
A dog is by nature unpredictable. You make a great folly thinking you can totally predict what it can and will do.
We've maimed people (they matter a dog is an animal like a cow/sheep) who can attest to the menace they are. Anti social at best I say, dangerous at worst. The law don't go far enough
Yes. No risk of bites, on leads with mega bucks fine if caught without being on leads/muzzled. Thats what I would like, actually, I would like to see them totally outlawed and outwith public circulation bar essential needs
Do I think it would be fair to have a blanket ban? No, of course not.
Do I think that people should have to go through stringent processes to gain a license to own a dog? Yes.
