Daily Carol's 365 from 12th December 2012 - A Year of Happiness

Thanks Timmy :)

Today is a mad rush day ...... We have a big Charity Gig in Manchester today that starts at 2pm and finishes at 6AM - yes AM!! so I wont be on here at all for the rest of the day and know I wont be back in time to post a POTD for today. Had to think fast so got some flowers out of my vase and worked on it for 30 minutes to get it as right as I could :)

I love Roses and yellow ones are one of my favourite colours so here we go ....

I know :( and at work at 12 so probably about 3 hours sleep (if Im lucky) ..... I'm getting too old for this game

so do I :( my own fault for falling in love with a music genre that has been going for over 40 years and everyone is still devoted to it :)

That's lovely tho and missing a few hours sleep for something so cool is worth it really :-)

true and i have monday off so can catch up then :) Great to see friends who you have known for that many years - coming from all over the country :D Right best get gone then or I wont be able to get a decent place to sit :( and I have three acts at 9pm to photograph - if everyone lets me near the front :)

Very pretty, and I hope you have fun at the All nighter :D

Lovely - I love roses! I thought of putting water drops on mine (after I'd shot them!) and I can see from this that it works.

Thanks everyone :)

Well I got some wonderful shots last night ( and everyone let me near the front without moaning ) There were 3 artistes .... Pat Lewis, Spyder Turner (and yes it is spelt with a Y) and Darryl Grant - all American Soul Singers who have been favourites on the Northern Soul Scene for over 40 years. All three are in their 60s and still singing strong. I know the photos were taken last night but it was close to midnight so I am hoping that I can post as my POTD ;)
The only problem is that I couldnt decide which one to pick so I have chosen one of each artist - hope you all don't mind.
This is one subject that I do love to photograph (maybe not perfectly but it is getting there )

Some of the sets can be found on my flickr and the rest are on my Facebook

Thanks Matt .... yes now I look at the bottom two there is a bit of blur around the top of the heads and noticed his hand is blurred (a lot) on the bottom on - meant to crop that one but must have missed it :( )
The lights were horrendous.... red lights and also flashing side lights - kept changing colour and too bright but I tried to keep them out :)
Second show I have done and only 4 artists so far but do enjoy doing them :) Practice makes perfect :)

Lovely portraits, Carol! Agree with Matt but I like them all the same; looks like a really fun evening!

Thanks Toni :) Was an amazing night .... 16 hours of music and dancing (2pm till 6am) Each artist did an hour each as well. 600 people there as well as VIP guests (me and Glenn being part of that group :D ) and the Lady Mayoress of Oldham .... I took about 700 photos of dancers, artists, djs etc but only posted the artists ..... Great night and looking forward to next years already :)

Sounds like a fab evening Carol and I like the shots.

Re the lights - I've shot a few blues gigs (just for fun) and sometimes there are three different colour of lights all at once. Also often low light and flash can be distracting so I've whacked up the ISO and then converted to mono in LR. Slightly noisy black and white images sometimes suit the 'feel' of the band.

All night music and dancing sounds like my kind of evening! Glad you had such a great time.

Thanks Lynn..... I tried shooting them in Manual but couldnt quite get the settings right so went to auto just to make sure I got them. Just the camera flash and zoom lens (80 - 200mm) The lights were the 3 different colours and were driving all the photographers crazy lol

Might try them in Mono just to see what they look like - am having very good feedback from the 'Soul Scene' though and even the artists have the photos now and 2 have already given me feedback - all good which I am pleased about :)

That's great - always lovely when the artists like them. :D

Sometimes I've played with shooting towards the lights as well - like this one - this set was when I'd only had my new camera a few days and was still getting used to it.

I found at first that they always were a bit dark and needed pulled up in LR - which created more noise in the shadows - all part of the learning curve.

Did you do some dancing as well? I love nights when I get to do dancing and photography on the same evening. :D

Thats a great shot - never thought of doing that  but may try next time I get a chance :)

Oh yes I always get to dance ... sometimes even when I'm taking photographs  Glenn is the DJ and I stand next to him on the stage and photograph what I want and dance away .... and he always plays a song dedicated to me so I always get to dance to that one :D

:D Also means you've somewhere safe to leave your camera when you do have a dance. :)

Agree with Matt, bottom two are a bit soft, but shooting stage shows is very difficult with all the lights.

Do prefer #1

Thanks Sarah :)

Looks like you had lots of fun carol these are gorgeous!!

Thanks T .... was great fun and am now suffering the consequences

How on earth have I missed your last few days? I even subscribe to your thread!:lol:

I really like your flower - the water droplets in it work well and the spray sets it off very well.

Your photos from the charity night are also great, soft or not! I dread having to shoot anything inside in those lighting conditions and I think you did an amazing job of it - sounds like a fantastic night as well

I like todays and think it works well in B&W but maybe just a tad too dark? Not sure but a little more light may work well - is that near to where you live?

As has already been said....but, they are still a good set of images all the same... I like the last one the most.

Thanks Sam .... Love taking photos of Bands and Singers at the Venues but only in the last 3 months having I really been 'trying' to get them right .... love doing the close ups as no one else seems to do them.
Yes the School House is just down the road from us and now I looked at it again it does look a bit dark :(

love old school that really appeals to me :)

Thanks Tezz :)

As has already been said....but, they are still a good set of images all the same... I like the last one the most.

Thanks Lee :) Doing the majority of my shots in Manual now so definitely pleased with myself.... take a couple, check them and adjust if I have to ..... takes more time but more learning for me :D

Hi Carol, just catching up on your last 4 or 5 days after the holidays. Like your rose and the water on the cd, good idea. Birds are ok but could do with a better background but your second one from the big concert really catches my eye. Well done considering the conditions.

Thanks Phil :) Glad you like them and agree about the birds :) Better b/g than our 'weedy' patio  Yes I like the second one in the set of 3 - Pat Lewis - an absolute star and wonderful lady.... 65, walks with a cane but still managed to put on a fantastic show with her original hits from the 60's :D

Carol I love to look at your progression over the last 35 days and I have nipped in everyday but Day 35 just doesn't do it for me I'm afraid , I find it a bit bland and not your usual Gloss !!
